You know, indy sequels generally come with expectations of being just like the first game with maybe minor improvements at best. Miasma 2 added major changes to the formula and I ended up really enjoying the experience.
Like the first game, Miasma 2 is a tile-based tactical in the vein of X-Com with light RPG elements such as buying stat upgrades or consumable gear between missions. But this game introduced improved stealth, a first person base scene, and simultaneous actions. Now, you declare every characters actions and watch them play out in real time hoping to shoot first. This adds a new dynamic to the combat that I really like.
The game is extremely short, the economy is completely borked and the RPG stats still feel very light and unbalanced. But ultimately, it doesn't detract from the experience.
You level quickly enough that you can become OP early on and the inability to afford consumables isn't gamebreaking. I'd say it adds to the "Small-Indy-Charm" even if its not right.
The most important difference for me between the 2 games was the stability. My review of the first game was after 42 minutes with 3+ crashes and struggles to even play. Post-review I DID finish the game but the problems killed the experience for me.
Everything worked here as expected. This allowed me to focus far more on the good aspects of the game.
Still... the story picks up after the first game and I would highly recommend that you play Miasma: Citizens of Free Thought before this. It's a fair price for the pair of pretty good indy tactics games.
