Base Wars is a unique strategy concept, it feels mechanically similar to RTS games like Age of Empires and Starcraft but packaged in a turn based format. I'd describe it as chess without a grid.
I've been following development for a couple years and the game is actively getting updates every month or two. As of 1.0 the core gameplay is great. Online games are easy to set up and the map editor is very in-depth. There are some missing extras like a full singleplayer campaign and a replay system, but those are claimed to be coming soon.
If you aren't a fan of turn-based strategy games, you will not like waiting in Base Wars. Mechanically the game is beginner friendly but it takes a while to get used to planning moves and positioning units, which means new players tend to take a long time to play. Your first games will probably take an hour, but after that curve games take 15-30 minutes.
If you are a fan of turn-based strategy games, then you should try Base Wars out. It's been a blast to play and I'm constantly running into new strategies and tactics. If you don't have friends to play with (or even if you do) then I really recommend you join the Discord. The discord community is very small (like 5 people as of now) but that's the best way to set up multiplayer games. The dev is also active there and has been open to feedback.
