I was very hyped for this sequel, being the nostalgic drive it implied and how originally retro it looks. Then it came out and the bad reviews started pouring in.
Okay, so first off I gotta address the obvious fact: the game feels unfinished and very unpolished.
I encounter a progression halting bug in the very first door of the first level, thankfully it solved itself by restarting it but there are many issues with the game that make you think that it could've, you know, stay a little longer in the oven maybe? The IA ain't bad, it's just basic, and that's very fine except when it forgets to work. There many times in which you'll find enemies completely braindead just waiting for the trigger to jump into action, it somewhat feels like peeking behind the scenes which unfortunately takes you out of immesion fast, well there's this and enviromental issues like doors not working and such.
Weapons might not feel entirely right either. Some of them might feel nerfed or useless, and it is mostly unsastifactory. The accuracy of some of them is terrible as well, that is a major issue for a shooter like this.
The game is also heavily scripted which makes the issues kind of a big problem, but I do love the way the whole thing is constructed. It just brought me back to the games of the late 90's. Speaking of which, much of the criticism leveled at the game was aimed at that particular design choice. Some of this people seem to forget how scripted the games this one is influenced by were, like Half-Life or Blood 2 or Half-Life 2. I take it many were expecting something more a la DOS FPS like the last one, or maybe a more Quakey/Doom style FPS like pretty much every damn shooter is doing nowadays. Phantom Fury is not one of those games as it draws much more from the enviromental puzzles and action storytelling of the second age of shooters, and even if it sometimes might not work entirely, I duly appreciate it. I mean, it's not 2004 anymore ok? We get that, Phatom Fury is not trying to be HL2 but merely tribute and acknowledge it, just because there's some physics based puzzles doesn't mean it has to reinvent the wheel for you to fucking like it.
This is also the closest thing we can get to the original Duke Nukem Forever. You know, the one from the early trailers. You can tell 3D Realms really recicled much of the original concept for this one and if this would've came out 25 years ago or such it would've blown our minds for sure.
Now I'm really going out on a leg here defending Phantom Fury not only 'cos I think is alright but because I think Slipgate Ironworks really has something going here, not only visually but also in how smart the gameplay is, it just needed some more time in the oven and I truly hope they get their shit together for the next one because I really think there's some very talented people working here; haven't tried Graven yet, but I've read even worse things about that one, so we'll see but this one is defintevely worth a play I think.

I can't even finish this... The level design in this game is got to be one of the worst I have ever seen in a game, ever.

This game honestly deserves a "mixed" rating. I enjoyed my time with it, but it is inferior to Ion Fury. It has some frustrating levels, I experienced multiple bugs that required checkpoint restarts (no crashes tho), and it has janky animations and feels like it could have used more time in the oven. But at the same time, I really enjoyed the aesthetic, it has levels with a lot of detail that are fun to poke around in, and it has some satisfying weapons. If you have a soft spot for retro shooters and don't mind some jank, this one can be enjoyable, but it's not a must-play masterpiece.
Also on a much smaller note, the trailer way oversells Blade from Sin. The trailer shows almost his entire appearance and it is very random and ultimately inconsequential. It was nice to hear his VA again tho.

This is a alarming step down from Ion Fury in so many ways.
The sound quality is inferior with most weapons sounding just plain pathetic. Nothing except the loverboy sounds good with the rest sounding like popguns or even a typewriter. Vehicle sounds are just as bad, music is so bland id say it was made by AI if i didn't know better.
The level design is all over the place. Starting out its not so bad but by the time you get to the train level you'll start to see the glaring problems. Some maps are too open for no reason with very little secrets to be found and the secrets rarely containing anything of worth, you're required to double back fairly regularly usually just for a locked door but sometimes a more vague objective with ZERO indication you need to go back.
The AI is more A than I with confusing and often easily broken pathfinding
Visuals are...actually not bad, i know the aesthetic choice that was made here and i really like how they brought out some of the better features of that era with much smoother gameplay, too bad its wasted among the rest of these problems.
Phantom Fury should be called "Phantom Fun" i have no idea what happened here or how the quality could take such a steep dive. This should have been everything Ion Fury was but bigger and better...the way a proper sequel works but as it stands this feels like literal shovelware that i say is barely worth the $12 i paid on sale let alone its full asking price.
Stay away, if you want a new modern boomer shooter go play Selaco its everything this game SHOULD have been.

This game was not worth the money even at half price. Save yourself the frustration, just enjoy Ion Fury and forget this game ever existed. The devs sure did

Don't know what all the hate is about. The game is quite good.

Feels like a 90s / early 2000s shooter and that is what I wanted. The game does start off a little slow but does pick up.
