Quick in-and-out action with a bit of meta-progression to give you something to look forward to. The simple visuals are highly polished, and there's plenty of effort in the sound design.
The real charm is the power-up system, though. Power-up cards individually give you better stats or new weapons, and some are better than others. But if you max out two card types, they'll sometimes combine into a powerful "synergy" card netting you a whole new ability type.
You can get everything from barrages of homing missiles that shoot smaller missiles, to a dash that launches a paralyzing shockwave. And even the more "useless" cards have their potential - maxing out the knockback and bullet size cards gives you a synergy that outright doubles your damage.
I don't imagine this is something you'd dump hundreds of hours into, but it's a fun way to spend a weekend or two, and it's plenty of entertainment for the price.

i loved the part where i got enough upgrades to turn it into an idle game (until the enemies launched themselves out of railguns)

its a game that you sit down and play for an hour and get about a weeks worth of time with. Don't expect a long-term game but its a fun backup when you need a break.
