my god i dont care if my graphics card is underpowered for the recommended specs, maybe your game should just be made better so i can actually play, got all the way to the hollow and its completely impossible to finish the game because of your poor optimizations

Another game dumbed-down for standalone headsets. Like most games released in the past few years, they're being built to run on standalone headsets like the Quest, so for the rest of us we have to deal with games that feel very much outdated with things like graphics (not too bad for this title), view distance and playable areas being very small. These games aren't built for PC's running VR headsets, they're built for standalone headsets with limited power and it shows. I feel like the screenshots are heavily edited, because no matter what I try I can't get my game to look like that, even running a 4090.

I really wanted to play Skydance's BEHEMOTH because it genuinely looks like a really cool game, but was ultimately disappointed as regardless of what i did It would run with just a black screen making the game unplayable

TLDR: Game is a buggy mess. AVOID. steam did not refund me because I had the game over 2 weeks. The game hardlocked me after the first boss. I verified the files and relaunched the game. Still get hardlocked after defeating the first behemoth over 3 times. Besides the game breaking hardlock the game has super low quality textures even on high settings and has many over bugs you would not expect to be getting charged 30 bucks for. When I died to the first behemoth and the level was re-set, a non intractable copy of the behemoth was left behind in addition to the working one. The level design is ass No left handed mode. Really? With a company like skydance there isn't a lefthanded mode when 10% of the population are left handed. The grapple should be used by the offhand. This amount of bugs 6 months after launch is insane.

I want to preface this by saying that this game is amazing. I loved every second of it, from start to finish. Yes, it had its problems and shortcomings, but for me, these were relatively minor.
Gameplay: Mostly Masterful
For me, the climbing, combat, and exploration all worked most of the time, and worked well. I enjoyed finding side paths that lead to puzzles and collectibles. I enjoyed the combat and how brutal it felt. However, there are some hiccups regarding the gameplay, especially relating to combat. Starting off with exploration, the game isn't like Blade & Sorcery where you can fling yourself to and fro; you have to use a specific input to "jump" from ledge to ledge. Attempting to create momentum and swing yourself doesn't work too well. In fact, momentum doesn't really seem to be a thing for this game. Even when using the grappling hook, it feels a bit too slow for me when you're trying to swing. Giving it a little extra boost in that department probably wouldn't hurt too much. Combat in Behemoth is pretty fluid and precise for me, but I still believe there are plenty of flaws with it. While it tries to be physics based, the weapons feel too heavy. Like, the
legendary axe
that you get near the end of the game is really uncomfortable to use in combat due to how heavy it is. Many other larger weapons suffer from this issue as well, making them very unwieldy. Especially if they require two hands. Next, I've noticed that enemies will just... ignore your blocks and parries from time to time? Not sure if this is just a quirk of the physics engine or what, but even for unblockable attacks, I've had a lot of my blocks and parries just get ignored entirely. Finally, the whole strength thing just makes combat a joke. It recharges very quickly, and while active, you basically cut through anything. Even bosses can fall way too quickly to this. It shatters defenses and shields like they're nothing, and you deal an extremely large amount of damage. And, strangely enough, you don't need to use your super strength for any of the behemoth boss fights. That feels a little odd to me, especially with the shit you sometimes do.
Story: Decent Enough
The story is pretty good. I certainly enjoyed it, though it's not the best story I've ever played through. It's enough to keep you invested, but the twists are pretty predictable near the end. Honestly, I would've preferred it if the twist wasn't used and things were played straight. Or maybe you get the chance to get things wrong? The only other thing I'd add is that the echoes and other bits of lore you can find across the Forsaken Lands is pretty good.
Behemoths: The Selling Point
Let's be real: you came here for Shadow of the Colossus: VR Edition. And in that regard... well, the Behemoths are pretty cool? Okay, real talk, the sense of scale is amazing, and I found the fights with them to be engaging. It's no swinging fest where you have to slap them enough; the fights are all puzzles. Each fight has a solution that you need to figure out. And boy, is it satisfying to finally bring one of these beasts down. But... there's a few problems. First and foremost is the number of behemoths: there's only three. Three. Well, TECHNICALLY
there's four, but the fourth one lacked the impact of the first three
. And at the end of at least one of the fights, you
get teased with the possibility of other behemoths
! God dammit, I would've LOVED to see more of these monsters, and I hope and pray that Skydance adds more, either through DLC or updates. The fights themselves contain some jank, especially with the timing of attacks or the methods used to subdue the behemoths. When I fought them all, there have been strange timings on attacks that are nearly impossible to dodge unless you have perfect timing. And their methods of actually bringing them down are a little awkward, to be perfectly honest, and sometimes they don't even work properly. The second to last behemoth just straight up ignored my attempts to bring it down at one point, only to just... suddenly go down despite me having done nothing to it for the past ten seconds. Weird stuff like that. Finally, though it breaks my heart to say it, the first behemoth is rather forgettable. They're massive, they're terrifying, they're cool... but that's it. You hardly climb around them and actually spend most of your time on foot against them. Maybe to some, that's not a bad thing, but for me... darn. I really wanted to climb around like a parasite looking for weak points to poke.
Miscellaneous: Various Gripes and Praises
Weapons: Oh my God the trophy weapons are so fricken cool! Big, flashy, will absolutely make you feel like a badass using them. The other weapons are also pretty cool, and even the mundane ones felt nice to use most of the time. However, these quickly get replaced by the
three legendary weapons
that you collect throughout the game. These weapons are just objectively better than most of the other weapons you can find and collect in game. Now, for some people, that's no issue, you'll just use whatever you want and pull 'em out when you have to. For me, I honestly felt obligated to use them because of the resource investment and reliability of them, and especially because they specifically can't be holstered in your secondary weapon inventory; they have to be put in your primary, easily accessible holsters. That's just a me thing, though. Upgrades: There is no XP in this game. You find your upgrades in the wild through side paths and optional areas. Strength, Health, Stamina, and even your
legendary weapons
are all upgraded using items found through exploring. Honestly, it's pretty damn cool. Especially when you actually have to forge on your weapon upgrades yourself (well, not actually forging, but it's still pretty cool regardless). Sound Design: Everything about it is pretty much perfection. The roars, the screams, the voice acting, it's all spot on. Hell, when using your strength power, I could feel the sound of Wren's heart beat vibrating in my temples like my veins were pulsing and straining. That. Is. Awesome!
Bugs: Unfortunately Unplayable For Me
Okay, so, when I attempted to play, there's a particular section in the
Ice Castle
that just causes me to crash constantly. I can't proceed past it. As it may just be an issue on my end, I won't change my review just yet, but if it isn't, it'd be nice to know. I'll leave my review as a recommendation for now, but if I can confirm that the bug is for everyone, I'll change it later.
Conclusion
Overall, I believe Skydance's BEHEMOTH to be an amazing, if flawed experience. The combat is solid, the behemoths are awesome, and the story is decent. There are some issues with the mechanics I'd like to see addressed, and holy hell, PLEASE add more giant monsters to slay! It's a massive waste to just have a few! But, besides that, I'd rate this experience a solid 8/10. It's worth a play for sure!

Game is VERY fun, but unplayably laggy. (Which is my fault, i don't have a card near good enough for this) Will recommend because the gameplay is fun, but make sure you have the right specs before buying

this game is great, but i would like a left-handed mode. the game has been out for 6 months, and i feel as though this simple feature could be implemented easily.
