Eh, it's ok. It advertises fast paced dogfights with a naval theme. The problem is that there isn't a whole lot to it, but it just came out on early access, so hopefully it gets better.
Nearly every upgrade is both very situational and provides a minor stat boost. Stuff like +15% turn speed when at low altitude, -1 ability cost during the day, all of the bird ones that do like +20% to stuff in high winds but the high winds zones are small, rare, and push you in a direction. Their are cooler run defining upgrades but they are very rare. you get 1 (of 3) when you start a run and another every time you beat an elite fight. While some of them are very cool, (the energy saber, the lighting turret, the energy shield; others are less useful, like the one that makes junk only drop health).
There are also only 4-5 enemies (+2 if you count the mission specific fort and treasure ships) there might be more, but I just haven't gotten far enough to see them because the game is very hard. There are two variants of deathball enemy that can basically instakill, even at full health. One is a buzzsaw ball that isn't too bad as long as you don't let it close the distance but once its on top of you there wasn't much I was able to do about it. The other is a ball with like 8 cannons that shoots a wall of bullets at you that can be very difficult to dodge when you are trying to fight multiple enemies, and its game over if you get hit by the whole burst. there were fights where i was dealing with like 4 of these things at once.
I also didn't like how the progression system is tied to acquiring blueprints, that are randomly dropped from crates, sometimes as battle victory rewards (in lieu of one of those marginal perks), or dropped by forts during the fort mission. There were 2 runs i a row where i got none of them, making 0 progress.
There are a lot of things I don't like about the game, I'm hoping it gets better, but at the end of it all, I had fun. If you do buy it, recognize that it is pretty early access.
