The Explorer’s Map Pack for Sid Meier’s Civilization V is a bite-sized DLC that adds ten carefully crafted maps to the strategy classic—five based on real-world regions and five fictional scenarios that push the envelope of strategic planning. It's a modest expansion, but one that’s clearly designed with the curious tactician in mind.
🌎 What It Does Well
One of the most appreciated elements of this DLC, especially by long-time Civ V veterans on Steam, is the thoughtful map design. These aren't just new shapes on a hex grid—they subtly encourage different playstyles. Take “Bering Strait,” where the limited land bridges force naval mastery, or “Rainforest,” which transforms the usually dense jungle into a tactical playground. The real-world maps like the Caribbean or the Amazon evoke a certain geographical intimacy, letting players engage with familiar terrain through the lens of empire-building.
Reviewers with hundreds (or thousands) of hours in the game often highlight the fresh strategic wrinkles these maps bring. Unlike randomized maps that can occasionally feel repetitive or lack cohesion, these curated landscapes introduce deliberate chokepoints, unexpected resource distributions, and environment-driven play.
And importantly, performance and compatibility are smooth. There's no bloat or clutter—just new canvases for your conquests, seamlessly integrated into the map selection UI.
🔻 Shortcomings That Keep It from Greatness
Despite its positive reception among dedicated fans, the pack has its share of downsides—most notably, its lack of depth beyond maps. There are no new mechanics, units, or civilizations, which makes it feel more like a seasoning than a full course.
Another common critique, both on Steam and in professional outlets like PC Gamer, is that replay value diminishes quickly. Once you’ve experienced the unique layout of each map once or twice, they don’t offer the same procedural surprises as random maps or the endless variety from community-made content in the Steam Workshop.
Also, in a post-Brave New World world, where Civ V has ballooned with rich systems and expansive content, this pack feels a bit narrow in scope. It doesn’t add anything mechanically new, and so it doesn’t change how the game is played—just where it’s played.
⚖️ Final Thoughts
The Explorer’s Map Pack isn’t essential, but for seasoned Civilization V players who crave a shake-up in scenery, it’s a worthy addition—especially for the price. It’s a quiet DLC: no fanfare, no flashy content drops, just a collection of engaging maps that occasionally surprise even veteran emperors.
Final Rating: 7.5/10
A solid map pack that rewards exploration and experimentation, though its appeal is strongest among dedicated fans rather than casual players.

Should just be a free update in the game, not a paid DLC
