A low-budget hack-and-slash action game that can be fun if you don't expect much from it and the game doesn't demand much of your time.

Hack n' Slash is one of my favorite genres ever. I have major fun playing those, learning the effective combos and how to become a force of nature. Ultra Age is another one of these, it has interesting mechanics and good combat but is janky and very repetitive. So let's start. For starters, the presentation is pretty standard, however, it is very well made. Forests, deserts, and industrial complexes that have nothing special going on but look fine for the most part. The blade effects are sparky and beautiful, and the colors are visible enough so you can understand the attacks. The combat is superb and garbage at the same time. The blades are great, and the blade breaks are awesome, however it's clear that the combos are not balanced, meaning that there is always one combo that is way more powerful than others, so the most effective way to play is just to spam this combo till everything is dead. Also, some enemies have weaknesses for specific weapons, meaning that you will always use the Katana for Flesh and the Claymores for Metal, and the other weapons sit in a strange limbo where they are not effective enough for any of them. For example, The Gunblade is awesome, but the Katana is more effective for biological enemies, and the Claymores are way more effective against robots, and these are the only enemy types you will encounter, so why bother learning it? Also, the lock-on in this game is awful. The story is… okay. Nothing special, the dialogue is cheesy, but it gets you through. the premise is fine, without spoiling much, it's ok, really, and gets the job done. In the end, I had some level of fun with Ultra Age, mostly because I love Hack n' Slashes and this is a competent one, but I get the criticisms, and the repetitiveness can really get annoying. I recommend it, but be aware of the issues this one has.
