Do you enjoy making strong or goofy frog people bent on turning the world to undead amphibians? well this is the game for you!

New Privacy Policy causes game to crash. Can't play despite playing dozens of times before.
Never trust games that use proprietary clients to push shitty ads and pop ups.

2025 and they still have yet to fix the end turn Bug that bricks your save game, AI battle load times takes like 5 to 10 minutes, theres a game breaking bug that makes the AI Hero have busted states with every perk in the game, wish I could get this game refunded

Couple things: Devs need to actually fix long term games, let alone fix the AI as the AI in this game cheats to such an obscene extent (even on normal and easy difficulty) that games become repetitive, boring, and all about optimal strategies otherwise you'll get steam rolled by an AI that gets unlimited troops, heroes, immediate leader recovery time. Increased movement than any of your units, all while getting unlimited resources. I have enjoyed this game time to time, but with each update I am unfortunately reminded that long games don't work, and that they made an AI cheat so hard it breaks reality. In all fairness the AI doesn't play checkers against you but connect 4. I would not recommend this unless they take a long look at the AI and reduce the cheating it does, if not eliminate it and admit that they struggle with programming a proper enemy.

I really enjoyed this game, till I got to about 300 hours of game play, and during the turn base - AI fighting AI, the game continually bombs each time. Haven't been able to play it since. Seems several people are also having this problem. So until bugs are fixed, I wouldn't recommend you buy this game. And yes, software is all updated, and I have a great PC.

I've just finished a custom game and I think that AOW4 is one of the best 4x games I've played. In the present gaming world, when big and famous companies are releasing a lot of games that can kill their respective franchises, this one is an awesome breath of fresh air. There are only a lot of improvements and quite a lot content more than in AOW3.
The graphics are stunning, the customization of races and heroes is original and a pleasure to mess with and play. The city building is coherent and makes sense. Even the diplomacy is very well designed not only with the opponents' realms, but with the free cities as well. You research the spells from tomes that match your class and they become more and more spectacular.
And then there are the dragons. I love them, I love to play with them and in AOW4 you can! You can even raise them from the slightly less dangerous cubs.
I was playing with an Oathsworn ruler, trying to befriend all the races, when I was pleasantly surprised by a quest given to me. One member of the elves court came to me and told me that he suspects that their queen was kidnapped by their new ruler and banished somewhere. He asked me to find her and bring her back. So, my custom run became a great story of this fantasy world and of all the heroic actions of my hero.
For all the 4x lovers or people who want to try this genre, I recommend this game with all my heart. It's not plagued by artificial restrictions and you can play how you want, not endure all kind of punishments (like war penalties or your cities destroyed from time to time because that's what the game designer wants, letting you feel like you're periodically bashed on the head with a club).
Pros:
- stunning graphics and models
- a lot of content
- you can play how you want and customize your hero how you want
- the runs become the story of your people and your hero is really a hero who does meaningful deeds
- great variety of equipment, spells, mounts and units
- the game is worth of its name
Cons:
- I can't think of any, maybe that I would love a federation feature like in Stellaris.

So like. Lets face it. This game has a LOT of content and a LOT of replay-ability. Some of it seems a little samey after a while, but, the amount you can do with AOW4 is amazing.
I've sunk about 200 hours into it, I'd sink about 200 more.
Pros: Excellent fun and customization.
Indepth combat system that's easy to pick up but lets you get a lot of complexity into it.
Lots of emergent storytelling. Really feels like an RPG sometimes.
Cons: The AI BLATANTY cheats sometimes.
Sometimes enemies can get a little out of control.
AI can't really handle certain strategies, allowing for easy cheesing

great game, I do hate the way the put out dlcs and the pricing. Takes my pure joy of the game and flushes it down the toilet.

Paradox publishes games ONLY to sell DLC. You should ignore this game until the final piece of DLC is released and it's on a deep discount, but this is Paradox so you'll still probably have to spend 4-5 times the game's actual worth even then.
I will never buy another one of this cynical DLC factory disguised as a game publisher's products again.

Currently my favorite 4X game. Amazing singleplayer, great story mode with lots of challenges, and the multiplayer is a lot of fun. That said, multiplayer can be rough sometimes with desyncs and needing to do simultaneous turns for brevity, but I've enjoyed it nonetheless. I've heard the Giant Kings update has made the game more stable for online play, but we'll see.
You're basically playing as a high fantasy god-wizard practicing high fantasy eugenics (no seriously, this is a pretty much it). Maps are procedurally generated each game, but can be customized with different challenges, quirks, events, climates, etc. because in AOW3 the world portals were re-opened and all the Godir (the god-wizards previously mentioned) are released and some (most) of them are butting heads. Everyone gets along basically as well as the Greek Pantheon did in mythology. It's bad, but it makes for a good sandbox to play in.
Anyway, the beauty of the game is how every campaign plays out so differently compared to a Civ or Stellaris or Total War game. Sometimes I want to play as a bunch of cannibal halflings led by a dragon god who wants to raze everything to the ground. Other times I'll be a necromancer with a heart of gold, uniting all the independent city-states behind my skeleton army. Stellaris almost nails this actually, but what it lacks is all the weird customization you can do with your armies, not to mention the combat has much more depth.
I'm rambling now, but if you're getting stale on 4X games and don't want to wait for the new Endless Legends to come out then I highly recommend AOW4.
