Ever heard of games like Space Invaders, Gradius, or Galaga? Well, throw those old boomer games into the nearest toilet, because a new contender for the best, most modern top-down space shooter is on the rise, with Cosmic Misfit's neon-soaked romp through the darkest reaches of space: REVO. All crafted by one man: the coding, the visuals, the effects, even the amazing soundtrack, is all created by a Mister Drew Van Camp, and I am so excited to finally see his gaming vision completed!

I have playtested this game since its Alpha state, back a few years ago, and I can tell everyone right now that this game has come light years ahead of its origins. Right out the gate, all the way to the finish, you will be challenged with various enemy types, strategically placed to give you one helluva ride.
The ammo, tech, health, and shield mechanics all compliment one another, forcing you to be both aggressive against your enemies, but also knowing when to bow out of a fight for a quick shield recharge. All of the different weapons eventually unlocked (through a system reminiscent of Mega Man games) are varied and colorful, and certain combinations of weapons can make a huge difference in some of the levels, or against some of the big bosses. The enemy types, with their myriad of ways to blow your little ship back to Earth, all have a themed, distinct color pallet, and is easily seen throughout the chaos of the visuals. With a sleek, stylized interface divulging all of the important information, a perfectly crafted menu system, and a load of options to get the game to run it the way you want, this is one of the most optimized and complete-feeling indie games I have ever played.
Lacking much of a story, it instead thrusts you straight into the action with only your trusty ship, docking bay, and a talking, glowing crystal at your side. You are tasked with weaving your way through forgotten corners of space, with only one goal in mind: survive. Through a more streamlined retro shooting experience, you will get the thrill of a fast-paced shooter, the challenge of a bullet-hell, and the feeling of playing something seen in the arcades back in the 80's and 90's; for me, it felt both nostalgic and fresh!
Overall, I have no complaints (other than me wanting more), and I could genuinely suggest this game to just about anyone who plays the vidya. Whenever I get around to playing Hard Mode (which with the Beta version, seemed the perfect way to play this game), I will update my review. GET REVO TODAY!!

Remember those good old DOS games like Tyrian or Galaga? No need to dust of your old 486. Here is something of similar vibe with a sprinkle of some new mechanic and nice visuals.

A fun and fast paced frantic shoot em up that has alot of style. It has a unique presentation with high contrast neon colors and a very catchy soundtrack that you will be humming after you play it. Quite challenging, especially in the later levels, there is some cool weapon upgrades that help you defeat some brutal enemies. The bosses can give you a tough time and will likely take you a few tried to figure out how to beat them. Its a game that is hard to put down, you keep thinking, "one more try". The frantic pace will keep you on your toes!

For those who love the arcade classics (specifically you GALAGA fans) - highly recommend giving REVO a playthrough. It is basically a arcade shooter that has been modernized and "dialed up to 11" with all of the pewpew and neon glowy-ness.
No spoilers, but one weapon you unlock later in the game might make you cackle like a madman when you first use it.
Soundtrack is a banger too!

If you are looking for 1-2 hours of fun arcade shooter this is the game for you.
Be aware that to many enteties on screen makes it lag.
Update: Lag issue seems to be fixed now!

When I was 11 my uncle had a Galaga machine in his basement. I spent a whole summer trying to beat my Dad's high score. I'm a professional streamer now, but that is one of my most cherished gamer memories. Revo takes me back to that summer. It's the first game since geometry wars to capture that feeling. My Dad would have loved this game and when I play it I feel like I'm still trying to beat his Galaga score. That really means a lot to me.
