The core gameplay remains the same as in the first Janosik - the controls feel pretty much the same, the level structure is similar, you get similar tools (gun, bombs, etc). But upon the foundation of the first game, Janosik 2 has added a lot more content. Instead of just Janosik, you get to control 4 characters you can freely switch between. You start out with only Janosik, and during the course of the game you recruit the three others until you have a full roster. Switching between them is instant, and they all have different abilities so you'll switch often depending on the situation. For example Bogdan can throw a hammer and drop bombs, while Janka has no weapon but can dash through the air and wall-climb. The number of abilities, especially those that help you traverse the levels, has been massively increased from the first game. This makes it feel even more like a metroidvania than Janosik 1, although the structure is still different from a typical metroid-like. Speaking of structure, the game is much larger than the first one. All the main levels are large, and there are over twenty of them. In addition to the main levels, there's a whole bunch of optional and secret levels holding special upgrades as a reward for beating them (like health upgrades, or damage upgrades for Janosik's sword). The amount of secrets in this game is insane. Every level has a bunch of them, and usually you'll be able to tell where they are by subtle hints in the environment, like a gap in the wall texture. There's a lot to explore, and exploration is always rewarded with treasure. Checking out every corner of these large levels is a delight. Janosik 2 takes the strength of the first game - the level design - and pushes it even further. Combat has also been improved, with every character's weapons feeling a lot more consistent in damage than they did in the first game. Each of the four characters has a different weapon with different strengths and weaknesses, so you have more choice in how to handle combat. Boss fights are much better than in the first game, too, where they had too many hitpoints and were a slog to defeat. Although perhaps this time the devs over-corrected a little too much in the other direction - particularly in the late game, bosses are a little too easy to bring down. But I'd rather have that than the massive damage sponges of the first game. Combat is faster, snappier, and less frustrating than it was in Janosik 1. There are also a few optional bosses, and three different endings based on which tasks you completed, adding a bit of replayability and an incentive for completionists as getting the best ending requires you to visit every level. The first game took me about 4 hours to complete. This one took 12. Much more content, more features, more abilities, improved combat - if you liked Janosik 1 (which is completely free to play), you will like Janosik 2 even more. Recommended!
