A lot of fun if you like squad turn-based strategies, that also happen to be set in a high fantasy land. Cool animations. Good options. Genuine strategy, and its a real challenge once get deep in the campaigns. And loads of replay value. Not only are there several campaigns but you can try a number of different strategies and enjoy yourself. Also theres skirmish and scenarios. I think theres multiplayer but I never tried. Oh, and the campaign stories are actually entertaining. Voice acting is good. Only downside is like similar TBS's it can be very difficult and you may need a strategy guide. And like similar games its possible for you to make a mistake or be unlucky in an early round, and not even realize it until you are much further in the game before you realize its unwinnable. But I still like it, and I've got probably over a hundred hours on the disc version. Steam is just for convenience but believe me I've put some time into it.

A timeless classic comparable to Heroes 3. As the game is very old - make sure to use the HD mod (GL wrapper), makes the game playable on new hardware, and much smoother (it apparently works on every version of the game, even the first title).

It might be the nostalgia talking because I first played this when it was new, but there's a lot of little mechanics here that I don't see in newer games. Passing exp rewards to surviving party members rather than "You joined this fight with 4, so each unit gets 1/4 of the reward even though only 2 survived/stayed." Movement over different terrain varies, so noting if a nearby enemy is flying or whatever and if you're next to trees can really make a difference. The different factions work similarly enough to learn how to play with any of them, yet differ enough to easily have a preference. When advancing to another mission, you get to choose one leader and 5 items to take with you. Can be gear, potions, or treasure, so keeping something to sell for early gold on the next map is a valid tactic and you don't have to keep a warrior leader if you had more fun leveling up the mage. You could even leave them all behind if you feel like it. One of my favorite mechanics is transferring units between leaders. Use a scout to ensure that Dread Lord gets into the city to heal and replace it with a Fighter so you don't need to pay the huge revival cost and the party can keep going. There's so many little things I love regardless that it's a 20+ year old game.
