Pedro's Adventures in Spanish is an adventure game for learning Spanish. In this game, you play as Pedro, an adventurer, who has to go on a quest to rescue a princess from an evil wizard, using the story and puzzles to hone your Spanish skills. This game is designed for high beginner/ low intermediate Spanish learners, at the stage where you want to start incorporating some Spanish-only materials into your learning but still find materials for native speakers too difficult and/or intimidating. It isn't meant to directly give you lessons, but to let you immerse with a learner-friendly game and help increase your vocabulary along the way. From the main menu, this game is 100% Spanish, but the language is simple and incorporates lots of cognates and pictures, to keep it easy to navigate even if some of the words are unfamiliar. Some of the dialogue occasionally has more complex grammar, and there are a couple places where you can read books that have longer blocks of text, but most of what you'll see and hear are relatively simple words and phrases that correspond to pictures, or short pieces of dialogue. As of the time of playing the game, my level in Spanish was high intermediate, a bit more advanced than the game is designed for. There were a few words that were unfamiliar to me, and I was able to learn them in context as intended. However, in general I felt the language was more simple and repetitive than I needed. I would have gotten more out of it if I had played it earlier in my Spanish journey. Putting aside the learning aspect, this played like a basic adventure game. The story was very bare-bones, although it did get some more detail towards the end. The characters are mostly pretty flat. There is a bit of humor here and there, which I appreciated. The puzzles were straightforward and pretty easy. The less-straightforward puzzles usually had a hint available somewhere in the world. I did end up having to look a couple of things up, mostly because I either overlooked small details or was getting impatient near the end of the game. There was a ton a backtracking and the map was fairly big. There is no fast travel, but some shortcuts do get added later in the game. There is also a hunger/thirst mechanic. Food and water were pretty easy to find, but eating and drinking felt very repetitive. I do think all of the backtracking and repetition is there to help with the learning process, but it gets pretty tedious if you already know most of the vocabulary. Ultimately, I think Pedro's Adventures in Spanish is great as a learning tool but just okay as an adventure game. I wouldn't recommend it over playing a better adventure game for someone advanced enough to do so, but I would recommend it for learners getting out of the beginner stage and getting started with more immersive materials. While I probably won't revisit this, it definitely had some charm, and I'd be interested in checking out other games from the developer. 7/10
