Sanabi is a game that wears its inspirations on its sleeve. Katana Zero very clearly had a strong impact on the direction of the games design, and much like Katana Zero, Sanabi is a game I won't soon forget.

Please just let me play the game instead of stopping me every 5 minutes for 5 minutes of dialogue.

Was on the fence about this up until chapter 3 where really, I'm finishing because I'm interested in the story aspect but the gameplay just isn't great, its very repetitive and really feels like it drags on without any clear progression on how much longer it is. While this might be a negative for others the long little story moments are the only solace I find after a long slog of awkward traversal. The controls (at least with a controller) are unreliable at times and the level design isn't very clear most of the time, often making me as a Player like I don't have control over what I am trying to do but rather need to wait for the game to let me do it. More than once I've grappled onto a moving platform and got stuck on it as well. Frustratingly having to repeat a long section because the last segment of the area isn't even on screen until you make a flying leap and hoping your grappling hook connects else having to repeat it over and over isn't very fun, couple that with an annoying event which without spoiling it is VERY HARD ON THE EYES. Anyways, interesting story, great pixel art and animations, mediocre to meh gameplay.

A great platformer with one of my favorite final gauntlets, genuinely touching writing, and some of the most expressive pixel art I've ever seen.

This is such a good game. It has great visuals, intriguing story and really really fun gameplay. A playthrough on normal took me around 9h so it's length is perfect for what it is. I strongly reccomend playing Sanabi!!!

One of the best games I've ever played. At the beginning of the game, the only issue I had was getting used to the gameplay mechanics, which were quite fast (skill issue). The graphics are beautiful, the story is cool, and the gameplay mechanics are unique. I just wish there was a final boss at the end, hehe.

Fantastic story with amazing direction. Better then most "AAA" games today. Gameplay is simple and fun. Swing around and move fast. Uhhhh...Maplestory

I’ve never been much of a fan of 2D or pixel art games, especially when playing them on a big screen. But after getting a Steam Deck, I thought, This might be the perfect device for games like these. The very first game I tried was Sanabi, purely on a friend’s recommendation. I went in completely blind no gameplay videos, no reviews and I’m so glad I did. The gameplay is fantastic it's smooth, snappy, and incredibly fun to master with brilliantly designed levels that suit both casual players and speedrunners. I had so much fun mastering its mechanics and eventually clearing Legend Difficulty. Yet, as great as the gameplay is, what truly stayed with me is the story. It’s been some time since I was this invested in a narrative (probably not since Clair Obscur: Expedition 33). Unexpected twists, emotional character arcs, mystery, and clever pacing kept me hooked from start to finish. And here’s the biggest surprise: Sanabi changed how I view certain styles. I’ve never been drawn to cyberpunk themes or pixel art enough to buy a game for them alone but this game made me appreciate and even love both. Its art direction is vibrant, expressive, and perfectly complements both the setting and the gameplay. It made me appreciate this art style in a way I hadn’t before. On the Steam Deck OLED, Sanabi runs flawlessly right out of the box with no tweaks required. The only thing I’d suggest is capping the refresh rate at 60Hz to squeeze more out of the battery. Otherwise, it’s a perfect handheld experience. This game feels like one of those rare gems where a dev drops a banger, like Katana Zero and then vanishes without a trace. Amazing game, much love <3
