My Experience
From time to time, I'll jump into a game to try and recapture some of that Hotline Miami magic. Sometimes I'm able to almost get there, with titles like Intravenous, The Hong Kong Massacre, GARAGE: Bad Trip, Mr. Shifty, or even in a freebie like Red Hot Vengeance. Although the gunplay in Sefir is somewhat smooth, that's where my praise for this title ends.
From the jump, you're treated to this odd DOS menu that you'll need to start the game - it takes longer than it needs to in order to get into the action. Then when you're playing, you'll see quite a few cutscenes, putting even more time between you and the gameplay. As an American from the south, I could never quite wrap my mind around what this story was about. Perhaps there are certain words or cultural idiosyncrasies that I needed to be aware of to truly understand, since the story seems to take place in eastern Europe.
I seemed to do alright in the game, but some of the changes that Sefir made to the formula were not for the better. First off, it doesn't seem like you're able to lock-on to enemies. When enemies are so quick and the game requires such twitchy reflexes, the lack of this feature leaves a glaring hole. Secondly, you don't always die when you're shot - instead, you'll see a countdown on your screen until you bleed out. Although you might be able to quickly finish the level or find a medkit, bleeding out usually just means that each of your attempts on a level will end up taking longer to complete.
Unfortunately, I can't recommend Sefir. If you're looking for an experience similar to Hotline Miami, I'd recommend one of the titles I listed above.
