Very similar to Knights and Merchants, but still unique in its own way. I played the tutorial and noticed some things I both liked and disliked.
1. The fact that only one resource can be delivered to a building at a time makes other serfs wait until that one worker is done before they can begin their task. Unlike Knights and Merchants, where multiple serfs can help with construction.
Rotating buildings is extremely helpful! It's great to have the ability to rotate structures—so good job on that.
2. Recruitment works differently than in Knights and Merchants, where building a house automatically provides more serfs. I like the feature that requires balancing troop recruitment with morale to avoid accidentally converting all your carriers into militia.
3. Combat in this game is enjoyable. I appreciate the non-human enemies—fighting wolves and spider dens is creative and adds to the experience. Magic is also a great addition; the lightning spell is especially useful against militia. However, attacking enemy territory feels a bit odd—you don’t actually destroy buildings (except with magic). Instead, you kill all the serfs and defenders, then occupy and take over the enemy defensive structures. It’s a nice mechanic, though it takes a while since only three warriors can attack the defenders inside a defensive structure at a time.
4. Food seems abundant, though my troops still starved at the end of the third tutorial mission. (I have no idea how to feed them.)
5. Walls and towers are a nice feature! I haven’t played with walls yet, but I hope to—they should add another layer of strategy. Towers and the building borders seemed a bit confusing at first, but I figured it out eventually.
6. I don’t quite remember if stonemasons required stone to be built in Knights and Merchants, but thankfully, they don’t here. I ran out of stone after creating 70 militia and realized I couldn’t win the game with them, so I had to invest in a flax farm. That’s a plus, as it means you can’t accidentally cripple yourself.
7. Army recruitment feels a bit strange. When you click to recruit, for example, an axeman, the order is placed, but once the process begins, the axeman icon disappears from the queue—even though everything is still in motion. The unit only spawns after a serf enters the barracks. It would be better if the icon remained visible until the soldier actually spawns.
Overall, a very nice game! It has a similar feel to Knights and Merchants but still maintains its own charm and quirks. I highly recommend it if you enjoy Knights and Merchants, as it's close enough to feel like another campaign—despite being a completely different game.
You can always try to beat the tutorial levels in under two hours to refund it if you don’t like it (as I did). But if you enjoyed fast-forwarding and building a sprawling city in Knights and Merchants, I doubt you'll hate it here.
If there’s any real negative about the game, it would be that the serfs look weird af compared to the rest of the game.
