A hidden gem that has more content than meets the eye. At first glance, this game may seem like an average $5 meme indie game, but after a few hours of playing, you will see what I am talking about. Mask Up is a not-traditional-rogue-like action platformer game where you play as a being that is made out of yellow juice. You can collect juice by breaking cans and by damaging and killing enemies. Your juice is your health, money, attack and movement costs, everything. You have 3 forms (and a 4th secret one), and your form is determined by the amount of juice you have. Every form has unique attacks and movement options. In an action platformer like Mask Up, this changes everything. This means you have to master 3 different movesets in order to get far in this game. The game also features a shop where you can buy items with your juice. Some items are very useful (tip: sabre is op) and can save your life many times. There are also 71 masks you can unlock. Some of them are easy, some of them are extremely cryptic (contact me if you know how to get the
bomb mask
), and some of them are mostly RNG. Did I also mention the hidden mechanics such as
the Dark Shop, corruption, the box, statues,
and so on? When you discover these, your whole view of the game will change. You can pet dogs, btw. The Good: -Juice system -71 unlockable masks -Creative level design -Game modes -Hidden mechanics -Petting dogs The Bad: -Can't change the default mask -RNG can easily screw you over (
flowers and explosive bottles
)

I haven't played that much yet but it was everything I was hoping for by the steam page and I feel this game is a bit very underrated so I was dying to give this a review. So, this is kind of a first impressions review still. This game has a STRONG visual identity, the art style is super charming and eye catching, definitely different from so much I’ve seen and it's so vivid by its vibrant colors (I love colors). The animations feels very natural and fluid, I can see so much care and love put into this, I also would like to point out the menus, they also carry on all of this I said previously, it continues on and even adds to the visual identity being kind of scribbly, or more accurately flashy style, and I absolutely adore it. A fun easy to learn but hard to master mechanics system, it has a ton of different stuff that adds to the gameplay like the traffic lights that was a very neat addition I haven't seen in other games at least of what I can recall. It's very creative, it has a lot to do and it's very fun, I felt myself getting better every run and I'll certainly play more. 10/10 you can pet the dog
