So this is a game I have followed, and participated in since it was available in early access.
This is a real cyberpunk experience, very gritty, especially if you are relatively inexperienced in these things, as you will actually feel broke, as opposed to many other games where very quickly you will become a millionaire, yet act like you're not in cut scenes. Economy is one of the single hardest things to balance in any game, and this one has nailed it. Everything sells for a fraction of the price, and using expensive consumables hurts. Yet, you will actually use those healing items, unlike most games, you will actually feel you need to, and you will actually do it. Amazing, I know.
Because I started by talking about the economy, because a good economy in a game is as rare as hen's teeth, but it's not actually what makes the game so very, very good. This game has the best, fairest combat I have ever seen in a game.
Don't let the engine fool you. This is not rpgm combat. This is very very different. Anything you can do your enemies can do, and vice versa (there is an exception I'll get to later). Another thing if your character started with the stats, and background, and skills of an npc, they would opperate almost exactly the same (you get a small edge here and there) also you start with more stat points than almost any npc, or any npc, I'm not quite sure. When you get into a fight early on and you see you have three cybered up, geared up paramilitary types against you, it's time to run away. You will die. Even at low difficulties.
Also if you don't learn the game, and pay attention, the game will not just become easier with levels. When you level up you do not gain hit-points automatically. You gain nothing automatically. Instead you three skill points that you can spend on abilities which improve your character in minor, but important ways. If you want more hp you will need to spend points on it. And that means you aren't increasing your to hit, or your evasion, or ranged evasion, or... or... I will say the leveling system is extremely satisfying, and no matter how far along in the game you are, when an opponent throws a molotov at you it is a problem. And that is something that can happen from day 1.
The cyber-ware system is really great, and has a bit of body horror going on, and can make your character have some existential crysees, and it gets worse the more you put in. But, oh it is worth it, and very satisfying.
Finally the one thing you can do, that your opponent's cannot: psychic powers. If you choose the psychic background You have access to psychic powers, and they are a hell of a lot of fun. Keep in mind that they are not "as intended." The developer put them in the game because people clamoured for them, but they are not part of the core vision. But they are a lot of fun.
The game as of this review has about 20 hours of content, but the developer is actively developing. And the combat is fun enough that I actually enjoy grinding random encounters (while listening to audio-books).
This is not the game I have played the most, but it is likely tied, or even my single favourite game, and I highly recommend it.
