Very bad port from the mobile with extremely clunky control.
The jump will quite often send you dashing toward a random location. To make it worse, this is the kind of game where you have bullet filled the whole screen (bullet hell), so the random dashing is killing you very fast.
The third story also like to throw you with very long corridor spawn multiple rooms with absolutely no check point in between. Good luck getting through it with low health while it is filled with enemies and hard to avoid obstacle.

In the mobile version, you can at least purchase cards through in-game purchases, and the game itself is free locally. But what about when I spend money on the PC version? Not only do I not have any additional ways to obtain cards, but I don't even get a single selectable card as a gift. So why did I spend money on the PC version?

Great unique metroidvania that relies on movement skills. I can't believe it when I saw it for sale on Steam, as I used to play it often on my phone.

After playing the mobile version (which is great by the way), this definitely feels easier but also more fun with some added movement options. It's a fast paced shooter/platformer with some replay-ability and different characters each with their own playstyles and bosses. Overall, not too heavy on the bullet hell aspect.
The translations to English isn't perfect, but still understandable and the UI was clearly designed with mobile in mind and could use some adaptation to PC/controller/mouse.

Coming from the free mobile release, I'm gonna say it right here: the PC version did not meet my expectation. I do recommend the game still if you can go past the issues, or at least play the mobile version.
The controls just hardly translate well from touch screen to controller (or keyboard). Also, since the game got no way to change your controller deadzone, it's very easy to have the experience messed up by a very slight drift of your joystick, making your character jump in a direction even doe you want him to jump without moving.
Sadly, the english translations are still very... average. Understandable at most, confusing/unclear sometime, plenty of stuff will be weird to understand. Doe it's not a game breaker, game is still enjoyable.
The graphics are on par with the mobile release, and even look nicer on the PC release. Can't say much here.
The PC release does remove the micro transaction from buying Boss training, Health Upgrade and Erin's card, so that's that, but the price tag is mostly justified for the better graphics, nicer audio and just a larger view.
Overall, I STRONGLY recommend playing the mobile release first before playing the PC release. It's a very unique game that may not be to everyone's liking.

A great port of a great mobile game. In this game, there are three "sides", three stories to play. Two of them have roguelite gameplay, and the third one is a metroidvania.
The first character's gameplay, Nana's, is changing equipment. You can have three pieces of equipment at once: a bow, a charge magic, and an amulet. The bow influences your quick attack and most general stats, the charge magic influences the way your charged attack works as well as its attributes, and the amulet influences the condition under which you're guaranteed to deal critical hits (except one which lets you penetrate an enemy instead), as well as some general stats.
The second character's gameplay, Erin's, revolves around constantly upgrading attributes without drawbacks. You have four element stats, Fire, Ice, Poison and Lightning. The highest upgraded one will be the "equipped" one, that changes your attack style and which upgrades you've gotten actually are in effect. There are also some upgrades that will always work, no matter which element is active.
And the third character is Alta (the side is named Eschatology). That's where the metroidvania gameplay is. It shares similarities with the previous two gameplay types, and throws in, well, the metroidvania gameplay style.
All the sides include three same elements: bullet hell-style gameplay, fast movement, and the mixing of quick/charged attacks. And, that's really fun! The attack patterns are made in a way that there is always a way to attack AND avoid if you don't mess up beforehand, so no cheap deaths.
Can't describe the graphics and music, as I don't really know how to. But, I can say that both are good. The graphics make everything important stand out, and the music just goes hard.
The one huge quirk with the game, though, is its controls. You see, the game is originally made for mobile devices, and so its controls were made with those in mind as well. And, they don't translate well to keyboard/controller. And while with a controller you can at least aim without troubles, the keyboard is a complete different story. You need to have access to 360 degrees aiming in a circle, the keyboard lacks that, so you're left with auto-aim, which is by far not good. Plus, moving around with a keyboard is hard as well, since to dash without hitting bullets or lasers, you WILL need the 360 control. And this time not even auto-aim won't help you, you're locked to 8 directions.
And it could have been done much better. Instead of adding many more control options and changes, it should have stayed the same, except with the arrow keys or the left stick used instead of swiping on a touchscreen.
I've never really thought much of the controls, but it becomes very noticeable when doing harder stuff. I, for example, only noticed that at the end of the Eschatology (metroidvania) playthrough on the 1hp mode, where I still can't get past the final boss for that one reason, instead of dashing, Alta simply tries to hit the boss with a sword, essentially flying right into a laser, the outcome is obvious.
Another thing ruining the keyboard controls is how the game doesn't let you move after attacking in Eschatology unless you dash for a second or two, so you either get hit because you can't move, or you get hit because you move too much.
If the creator just so happens to read this, here's some ways to improve the controls:
- Make it customisable. Not really that important, but using arrow keys with T, F, G and H won't work for many people, especially considering how close those buttons are to each other, it's uncomfortable.
- Rework the attack key, essentially make it just like the mobile version. When the player presses it, activate the charge like it does now. But, when the player releases it before it charges, check a condition. If the player isn't holding any direction key, upon releasing, attack. If the player IS holding a direction key, do a dash instead. Leave the charged magic as it is right now.
- Remove the thing where the player can't move after using the sword in Eschatology without dashing. Sure, it's made so the player doesn't fall down after attacking, but the drawback to this is that the player simply can't dodge attacks after attacking. After attacking with a sword, the player should start being able to move immediately after pressing a directional key.
- Just add the ability to play with a mouse the same way you would do on a phone, with swipes and taps. Maybe that way playing on a drawing tablet would be the best way to play, and fun as well.
All in all, the game is best enjoyed on mobile. Maybe it'll be fine with a controller, I can't be sure as my only controller is half-dead. But since it's made for mobile phones, it's best controlled on mobile phones too. The widescreen resolution and a little bit of glow isn't worth making controls bad. Buying it on PC is more of a way to support the creator, which I really wanted to do, and they for sure deserve it for making such a good game. And I'll be looking forward to the release of RuinsStory, another game that is currently in development by the same creator. I love ReversEstory, I really do, to me it's perfect in every way. But the controls just make everything that is perfect almost impossible to enjoy.
TLDR: The game has three different stories, the gameplay of two of which are roguelites, and the third is a metroidvania. It's fun to play, the graphics and music are really good, but the controls drag the PC version all the way down. Best enjoyed on mobile, buying the PC version is more of a way to support the creator.
Edit: oh my god guys i actually did it i just beat eschatology on 1hp mode
Late edit: Turns out RuinsStory was released 6 days prior to my review, oops! But I played it, didn't finish it yet since I didn't have much time, but it's fun! Originally intended a metroidvania, but became a roguelite after starting completely all over.
RuinsStory's quirk is the controls and the combat: you move in a side-view 2D level, instead of traditional moving, you jump from one wall to another in a straight line, sticking to the wall and jumping to other walls. Quite tricky but fun!
The combat there is different as well: you have two weapons of Alpha type and Beta type. Both use up attribution for their type as ammo. But, in order to restore attribution of one type, you need to use attribution of the other type, you recover exactly as much as you spent of another. There's also the Gamma type, that one is dealt by the character's sidekick, Nekoro, a cute little ghost-cat robot. His attacks are modified by the Nekoro Chips you encounter throughout the run. Nekoro attacks by going through a list of chips and using them one by one. Some add a new attack, some improve one certain attack in the list, some empower all attacks based on how many attacks there are in total, which gives a lot of versatility and room for strategising. The Alpha type weapons are used by tapping and automatically shoot at the nearest enemy, while Beta type weapons are aimed manually like the Charge Magic in ReversEstory and can only attack within the 180 degrees angle from the wall that Ruina, the protagonist, is standing on.
The music in RuinsStory is great as well, some songs and their respective locations being taken from ReversEstory and remastered, Nanase did a great job at music once again.
RuinsStory also has an actual story, as well as some lore pieces you can get easily while playing!
All in all, RuinsStory is a great game as well, totally worth playing.
