Would go with mixed if it existed... however, I am going with a recommend because the fixes needed are pretty simple and I'm confident the devs can make it happen. 1. Make the dodge effective. As it is, dodging is useless. 2. Fix the lock on. Right now, it just doesn't work. Everything else about the game feels great to me. However the two main issues add a level of jank that would be unacceptable if this weren't early access.

Chrono Sword EA 6/10 Ok, I’m gonna recommend this one with some caveats. 1. It’s for soulslike junkies Or 2. Top-down action junkies This is certainly not the best souslike game I have played. In fact, it’s near the bottom of the list. I personally liked their original demos much more, but what can we do, we have this now. All the other reviews are basically accurate: 1. Layer Confusion - It’s hard to know where to go or what layer you’re on in relation to other layers. Explore basically every corner and attempt of a jump, usually multiple times as you will not just find random items, but key routes. Idk how to fix this one and it’s arguably the biggest issue. 2. Insane Spikes - There are 2-3 bosses with insane difficulty spikes. For the really crazy bosses don’t be afraid to try everything in your inventory. This didn’t bother me too much, but some will pull their hair out lol. 3. Boss Teleportation - The bosses can “teleport” through ANY obstacles. I hope the devs fix this. You’ll think this fountain looks huge, I should be able to kite the boss around this. Then they will do a yellow special move and just jump/dash/teleport through any obstacle in their way. I still used the environment as much as possible, just know it’s not gonna save you every time. 4. Flask Chugs - With the timings in this game and how fast bosses react, flask chugs should be instant (not hold down Y for 3 seconds). The flask timing works for everything else in the game but not the hardcore bosses. Or at least make the click instant with a 2-3 second animation. That could be a decent compromise. With all of that said, I was honestly bummed when it ended at Sword Saint Issan. Who was also the hardest boss for me. I wanted to keep going and I was actually having a pretty good time by this point. There is a good game (maybe great) in here somewhere and with patches it will only get better. Everything I have mentioned can and hopefully will be fixed. Idk what they will do about the layers confusion though and it seems I am far from alone. Play this one if you’re looking for a sick top down action/soulslike and you have already finished WuKong, Death’s Door, Tunic, Stellar Blade, etc…

The first 5 min is the time to choose if the player dives into the game or just quit. This one absolved them with full of arts and music. It reminds me the original Dark Soul but in 2D. More feedback will be appended

The game is not without its charms, but it is difficult to recommend. Gluttons for punishment might enjoy it. Presently, I am an hour in and up against the second boss, whom I am confident I can defeat, but trying to muster the will to do so. Debating whether to refund, or keep bashing my head against the wall that is this game. So, what are the problems? The game is pretty janky. Movement and combat are laborious. Dodging sucks. Blocking is hit or miss, and the targeting doesn’t help much; I have to keep remembering not to press the stick in any direction before pressing the block button, and even then, the facing doesn’t always work. The weapon variety, at least so far, feels pretty lacking. The rapier vs. sword and shield offers such negligible difference, it’s best to just take larger numbers. The lo-fi graphics are pretty cool from a stylistic standpoint, but combine with the isometric perspective to make world legibility extremely difficult. It’s difficult to decipher your elevation vs. the environment, such that exploration is a chore. In combat, it’s difficult to read your enemies’ telegraphs or state because they are just too hard to see. Hard to know when or whether you’ve broken their poise, or if you should raise your guard. Also hard to see when your own poise has been broken; blink and you might miss whether you’re blocking an attack or recovering from it. Environments are so full of clutter, it’s difficult to see anything at all. Insofar as it goes for recently released, lo-fi, souls-inspired action-RPGs, I think Drova has got a lot more going for it. Play that instead. And yeah, after writing all of this, I think I’ve convinced myself to refund. I might pick this up again later on DEEP discount, but maybe I won’t bother …

Fun game overall! Here are my suggestions after appx. 4 hours, which took me to the first boss fight (i.e. second encounter with the Giant Spider) and then to the first elite enemy in the archives. 1. Walk speed is too slow. This affects combat mostly as there is a run option when traversing the game world. 2. Larger/heavier weapons like the Claymore are too slow to be effective (i.e. attack speed is too slow). Either speed up the attacks or increase the base damage by maybe 20-30%. 3. During the level up process, the player can't see how leveling up DEX increases the weapon damage. Since I see that some weapons have stat values that are supposed to be affected by DEX, I think this is a bug. Leveling up STR works fine. Other concerns are minor but here they are: 1. The shield doesn't rotate when you are blocking and moving your character. This isn't a huge deal as I've noticed that the shield blocks anyways regardless of the angle (as long as the enemy is in front of your character). If this can be changed easily, I would recommend it, as it's awkward and I've noticed others mentioning this issue in STEAM DISCUSSIONS posts as well. 2. The current set up with one tap for a very short dodge and a second for a roll is OK, but the initial dodge is very short. Not a huge deal but maybe increase the dodge distance a bit so it works better on its own. Also if there are i-frames with the dodge maybe increase that by a frame or two to make it useful. Lastly, I've noticed that attacks move the character forward a lot. I actually think it's fine, but it's just so different from other souls games that it changes combat significantly. Maybe I just need to get used to it :) Thanks again devs for all of your hard work! Cheers!! H PS, Just got to the second boss and this one really needs some work, IMHO. My character cannot react fast enough to get out of the way of his super attacks (due to very limited or no i-frames), and blocking just ends up with him staggering me and then causing massive damage. I've tried every weapon I've found (claymore, balanced sword and shield, katana, and rapier) and it's just a frustrating situation. I do think I could beat him with enough attempts, but my character is so slow to recover after attacking that it feels unfair. If you're going to have a boss like this, you need to speed up the player character's movements and attacks as well as reduce the downtime after the player is staggered (or modify the boss's movements and attacks). Otherwise, it's just a frustrating mess. PSS. I finally beat him after grinding several levels. Will keep my specific build out of here for spoilers but one specific stat was very helpful. I still think the player movement is too slow and the reaction time after stagger is too long, however.

Controls feel terrible and certain keyboard/mouse keys such as movement are unmappable at this stage. Combat feels really clunky. Needs to improve a lot to be deemed worthy throughout the early access. I'll check it again after a year, but at this stage it's a hard pass.
