If you have any doubts at all about the quality of this locomotive DLC, it behooves you to buy it and give it a try. I promise you, you will be seriously impressed. Smokebox has been making addons for this game for close to a decade, and he has constantly pushed the envelope of what this ageing game is capable of every time he releases a new locomotive. This is no exception. The auto engineer alone is a revolutionary new feature that, when combined with the expert automatic fireman, allows you just sit back and watch this beautiful locomotive operate, or even allows you for the first time ever to play exclusively as the fireman, which I highly recommend trying. The operating controls are incredibly realistic, so whether you're the engineer or fireman you will have a lot on your hands to manage. This locomotive is catered to every playing style, so whether you're brand new to train simulation or if you're a skilled veteran, there's something for everyone. This is not even to mention the exterior model, which stands up to close inspection and rivet counting. Everything about this locomotive is amazing. Do not wait for a sale. $25 is a steal for a loco that pushes the limits of what this game is capable of. 10/10.
As a wise man once said: "This is not for the faint of heart"
Originally I was going to give this a negative review. However after spending a bit more time with the locomotive I've come to enjoy operating it. While things such as the Advanced Braking System and Steam Management are still tricky to get right, they are a worthy challenge and give a feel for how complex these steel beasts were to operate. There are still a few issues with the DLC when it comes to double heading the Big Boys either with another Big Boy or the FEF-3, but these could be due to the buggy nature of Railworks as a whole.
Meanwhile the Rolling Stock that comes with the DLC is also nothing to sneeze at either. These are not simple reskins of the existing cars on the Wasatch Grade, but instead ground up overhauls of them. They are designed to be used alongside the Big Boy as they feature accurate weight and drag. They are also designed to work with the before mentioned Advanced Braking System as the longer the train is the longer it takes for the brakes to release. The same goes when it comes to applying the brakes, the longer the train the longer it takes to apply the brakes. it's accurate enough that you can actually part of the train keep their brakes on while the other part has their brakes released.
All in all this DLC is worth every penny however I will warn you that this is a EXTREMELY ADVANCED PRODUCT and as such is not something you should get if you don't feel like you can handle it.

I'm a kid in Toy Land, now. Been waiting for this one to come out. Smokebox (Mike Rennie) and team did a great job presenting every important control the Big Boys had, referenced to their 1948/49 configurations, and also put together a great manual that's easy-to-read but very informative. You can either do it all, or just kick in the Expert Fireman and Expert Engineer by clicking on their seats, and enjoy the ride. There's even a double-header Quick Start scenario, plus standard res models, clean or dirty, for computers that can't handle every nut and bolt. Comes with consists from 50 empties to 132 full freight cars. The full-load and double header configs are said to require high-end computers. I personally recommend setting the road number to 4-0-1-4.

The king of steam is back with a brand new, overhauled look. Everything about this high detailed, premium, platinum quality, powerful, giant steam monster clearly speaks the quality definition of genuine, high quality detail, effort, passion, love and interest of this loco. The Big Boy is definitely a strong, absolute must have for any serious train simulator enthusiast. Incorporating the highest detail and many operating features as well as many levers, switches and wheels to play around with. The only downside is no speedometer which a loco of this size must have, no oil fired version and no MU control equipment on this Big Boy. Normally I would subtract marks for that, however the auto fireman and auto engineer driver features are a revolutionary game changer as well as the whistle and bell are accurate to 4014 to compensate for the downsides, I’ll let those 3 downsides go this time. This is one, highly detailed, powerful, accurate, giant, steam monster loco highly recommended for anyone wanting a monster challenge and to test their train driving skills to the absolute limit on gradients, especially on steam. Smokebox, despite these 3 downsides, I’d say you’ve done a perfect job. Keep up the good work, I’m sure Ed Dickens will be proud of you. A solid, 100% grand, platinum 10/10 from myself.

I bought the works of art Promontory/Jupiter and Cheyenne/119 during the xmas sale as my entry into Train Simulator. I had recently built a HO scale layout based on the new bachmann Jupiter and 119. Seeing Smokebox's stuff is what finally brought me into Train Simulator. Buying the Big Boy was a given, except the stuff is so good, call me dumb, but I intentionally waited to pay full price. Would have paid double and still felt good about it.
I drive the steam stuff on easy because I'm just starting. I'm slowly learning the expert controls and that's been the most fun. This thing may also cause your nose to play tricks on you. I swear I've smelled coal smoke a few times already while driving it.

I have been waiting for the release of this locomotive for months, and I was beyond ecstatic when I realized it was finally available for purchase. I have probably only owned this DLC for a little over 15 hours and from the moment I first got into a quick drive session using it, everything exceeded my expectations. From the detail on the exterior of the locomotive to the incredibly well made sounds, this add-on is incredible both inside and out (literally).
I have a medium-end machine that isn't amazing at running Train Simulator, depending on what locomotive or map I use, and the detail on Smokebox's loco's don't help with my frame rate, but after changing the graphics settings to what was suggested in the manual, I get a good 30-40 fps, which is much better considering before the graphics changes I was running at ~13 fps. So I was very happy to be able to use such an amazing add-on and still preserve frame rate.
As for actually running this locomotive, it is MUCH easier to drive than a loco such as his FEF-3 or No. 199. I was expecting some deep reading into the user manual (which I do recommend reading before using the locomotive, because there is some good information in there), but after watching a short video, I got the hang of it pretty quickly. Don't get me wrong, it's still gonna take some practice to learn to operate better, but I don't think it is nearly as difficult as the FEF-3.
Smokebox has set a new bar when it comes to add-ons with this loco, and I absolutely cannot wait to see what he comes out with in the future. This add-on is 100% worth the $25 price tag in the sheer level of detail and work that went into making this incredible add-on. So, point is, if you like steam locomotives, and you like outstanding detail, I would 100% recommend this to you, no questions. I expect to be using this way more often than I should, haha. Incredible job, Smokebox. You continue to astound me with your work.

Smokebox has knocked this one out of the park!!! Having worked with the actual Big Boy that is on operation, UP 4014, I can say this model is as close to the real thing as 99.9% of us are going to get to running an actual Big Boy. For those that have purchased this locomotive and are having issues running it, please read the manual before leaving anything but a positive review. This is a very advanced locomotive and requires some knowledge on how to operate a steam locomotive. Once you get the hang of it, you will get more enjoyment out of it than any other locomotive in TS!

This is my first DLC that i have ever bought made by Smokebox and i must say the level of detail is amazing, and the closest ill ever get to driving the real thing. it looks perfect, the sounds are gorgeous and its a fun challenge to use, the only real feedback i can come up with if even that is a bug I've noticed with the articulation where it kind of snaps into place instead of a fluid movement though again I'm not sure if this is a problem with my game or an actual bug with the locomotive

The “Big Boy” by Smokbox (Mike) is truly amazing! If you want the MOST detailed and realistic loco in Train Simulator...this is it. The attention to detail is outstanding, the 3D modeling is top notch and the “extra” touches you won’t see anywhere else such as being able to change the numbers on the fly, add the “Big Boy” in chalk on the smokebox also on the fly, clean sideglass in the rain on the fly are things you won’t see with other locos. Having all of mike’s models I would say this is his masterpiece and well worth the small amount of money being charged. If this was ATS, it would be a $100 truck. Well done Mike! You have outdone yourself once again and breathed life into an old platform. Like putting a hundred dollar shine on a five dollar pair of boots! Redd.
