The negative reviews of this game are all right. If you want to know why, go read 'em. That being said, if you're into delinquent manga or manwha and Yakuza games, you won't be too upset. Yes, there's a lot of jank. Yes, Budi will be cursing every two seconds, and yes, the characters range from inconsistent and annoying to average in terms of two-dimensional writing. Yes, some of the minigames are downright unfair (bird minigame). The sound design in fights is so flat, it makes you feel like you're slapping soggy steaks in a gym locker with a piece of paper instead of throwing a punch. The voice acting can be spotty. There's a ton of padding, and fighting for the sake of fighting. The translation isn't the most natural, and there's a lot of texting speak and memes just kinda shoehorned in there for kicks. ...I'll bet you're reading this and wondering "then why the heck are you recommending it?" One reason: the jank is all a plus because it's the funny kind of jank. The combat stutters are the fun cheesy kind. You never know what kind of thing the characters are going to say next, even if it's lame. Fights are enjoyable enough that you don't get too tired of the padding. There are a ton of little details around the map that really show the developers put care into making it. The graphics are great too, with solid 3D visuals and fun 2D character portraits that are very expressive. Each character has a lot of variation in their portrait (maybe even more than necessary), which again shows that there's care put into the game. Whether you like what they made or not, the devs definitely tried. They put out the kind of game that they wanted, and it's actually finished. That's hard to do. Respect to them for that. Also, side tangent, but Richard is great. His voice actor delivers the lines with all the relish you'd expect of an edgy kid selling contraband out of his Nike backpack in between periods. I liked his writing a lot more than all the other characters, and whenever he said something I would always listen because I knew it'd be worth my while. Richard is definitely the best part of this game. Troublemaker isn't high art. This game won't change your ideas on gaming or help you achieve nirvana, but that's alright. Sometimes, in between the Fromsoft titles and the psychadelic rpgmaker games, you need a fun little palette cleanser to turn your brain off to. This is that game. If you saw the trailer and thought it looked neat, then buy it on sale. TL;DR It's not the best, but it's the fun kind of "not the best". And it has Richard.
