It's a relatively short and mechanically diverse open world title.
Most if not all of its great many mechanics, activities and minigames are extremely simple and thus easy to understand and avoid becoming repetitive even on completionist runs due to the game's scope.
The story is far from complex, but it suffices for the game's purposes.
I cannot attest whether the game delivers a good representation of new caledonian culture, but it does a good job at implementing it in a manner that harmonises seemlessly with game mechanics.
Whether or not the *cultural* representation succeeded, there is most definitely representation in this game I can appreciate.
Considering the amount of reviews, I hereby declare this game underrated.

I liked the majority of my time with this game, but there are a few design decisions that hold me back from recommending it to others. I enjoy collect-fests. I enjoyed the open world, the unique soul-jumping ability allowing me to become all manner of animals and objects. The setting, sound design, and story were both enjoyable.
My main complaint is the lack of accessibility options. I finished the game, and tried to 100% it by cleaning up the last of the enemy camps, and could not see well enough to find the last item I needed to destroy to get a completed game file, receive the rest of the cosmetics, and finish the game. I searched for over an hour, flew around the area, tried to find a video or guide, before giving up in frustration. Some sort of anti-frustration feature in this regard would have gone a long way, especially in a game that is already filled with accessibility options.

This game didn't turn out as interesting as it first looked.
The animal possession wasn't used nearly enough and the combat was very plain.
I also ran into a few game breaking bugs, but the option to skip to the next phase saved my play through from complete failure.

I went in blind, not sure what this game was, and it ended up being one of my favorite gaming experiences ever. Tchia is like if you mixed Zelda with a well-made indie animated musical.
It's short and sweet, but even after you're done with the story, the huge map is fun to explore and there are still so many things to collect, see, and play around with. Tchia has some of the most fun and fluid movement mechanics I've ever experienced in a game like this; traversing the environment never gets old for me, whether it's sailing, diving, running around as Tchia, or controlling animals.
Lastly, as a Polynesian, maybe I'm biased, but I feel like this team really captured something special and real about the Pacific islands. It radiates from every facet of the game's presentation, from the amazing music to the gorgeous visuals -- a kind of feeling you only get when creators put real love into a project.
I got the game on sale, and I felt like I underpaid for what I got, so I bought the soundtrack as a kind of tip for the devs, haha (and also because I LOVE the music in this game).

I had this game on my to-play list for a while but only just got the motivation to play. Gosh I've been missing out! This game is so much more incredible than I thought it would be in every way. I haven't progressed that far into the story yet as I've just been enjoying running around and discovering things and places, though I really like what I've seen so far of the story. I think the soul-jumping feature is very unique and adds so much fun to the game, both in terms of strategy and freedom.
I love the inclusion of the journal that includes info on the native flora and fauna and use of the traditional instruments in both the gameplay and soundtrack. Usually I play games while listening to my own music but I have really enjoyed the sounds in this game so far, both the voice acting and ambient sounds while swimming, running etc. Not only does this game have smooth swimming mechanics but also climbing ones, several other games that I have played in the past have been quite clunky with these features but it is a very smooth experience in Tchia.
I very highly recommend this game if you want to feel like you're really on an adventure and like exploring.
