What a great little game! Gameplay-wise it's basically a more polished version of Gladius with nicer graphics, good voice-acting and great soundtrack. What really stands out to me though is the writing. It's super clever, always hints at the story background and creates so much atmosphere. One example: "Using a pistol was like palling up with the schoolyard bully. When your target is weak and helpless, they made you feel powerful. But the second you fought something with teeth, you realized what a shitty friend you'd made." And that's just the description for the pistol! Pretty rad imo

This game is not only VERY bare bones, but it's balance is kind of shit. But the most annoying thing? LOS. None of my units can see more than like 1 space out from themselves without an active ability. But the enemy AI seems to be able to see the entire map. So when playing, you are just constantly getting units ambushed and swarm killed in a single turn. You can't tactically respond to instant death. You can't retreat from an enemy you had no idea was there. You can't save a unit that died in a single turn from max health. I played for 13 hours, and will never launch this shit again. It's not worth $5, let alone fucking $40.

This game reminds me of Sword of Stars 2. Amazing mechanics, great lore and factions. The combat is great and overall the game is decent. In the same time, it lacks content or activities in general to sufficiently entertain the player. If it had a bit more things going on other than fighting neutrals and ai factions , I would call this game good. But it lacks gameplay diversity, like more missions or maybe some global events where you have to collect pearls or whatever. The pacing feels off and as a result, the game feels too monotonous by the modern standards. It is worth buying but I cannot call it a masterpiece. A decent game with vision and serious pacing issues due to the lack of resources as compared to bigger competitors

While I miss the WH40K license and feel the differences between leader/factions are now a bit more subtle, I really feel that this game is a further refinement of the mechanics introduced in Gladius. I also appreciate how now the devs are much more free to develop the game, no longer beholden to a game franchise that was never concerned with balancing the factions.

An iterative upgrade of Gladius. The biggest addition is diplomacy that allows you to dynamically shape political map during the game. You decide on your faction by selecting a leader and each of them has one of the three paths as the default affinity (stay true to humanity or align with either AI or eldritch aliens called Voice). In theory you can research technologies from other affinities but in most plays you will want to focus on your main path and not slow its progress with other tech (unless there are things strategically very useful like medics from pure affinity combined with voice units). There is an end-game conflict that you can control on how quickly it progresses or even disable completely and “mutators” that change rules of the game for a given play. An interesting choice is the addition of 4 “neutral” factions. Apart from known from before “gray” enemies there are three NPC factions representing 3 main paths that start having quite significant control over the map. That means in a normal game map doesn’t need to be empty at the start as the warring factions can be used to fill it up. Also - we finally have roads to speed up movement on big maps. It is a true evolution of Gladius, you will experience that the game has a higher state of polish and more features although it doesn’t have as much content as Gladius with all of its DLCs.

It's not quite as pick up and go as Gladius, but it has a little more depth and story. It does still have that cool working-folks ease about it, though. It seems to be a but of a system-eater over time - not sure why. Probably something I need to turn off or on in the properties. But otherwise it looks cool and plays cool.

I gotta say, not the most original 4x game I've ever played, except insofar as the setting is really quite different. For me personally, the setting was what drew me in, and I really wasn't disappointed as far as the world building goes. The factions are just the right mix of interesting and mysterious. Otherwise there are some tweaks to the usual 4x formula, but it does feel a bit like a reskin of Civ games. Probably the biggest tweak is the unlockable 'mutations' which essentially add an extra element to how the gameplay works, like one that I got recently causes any biological units that die to spawn extra neutral enemies, that will randomly attack things nearby; it adds an interesting element to the gameplay. Another limits the technology you can research to those that your faction is . You can unlock one of these every run you do, and I think there's a couple dozen of them? The other tweak is that there are three factions you can't play, only form alliances with. At the end of a run two of them go to war with each other, and if you side with one of them you can finish a run by destroying their titan units which suddenly appear on the map. It's also possible to not pick a side and join the third faction, which I assume means you have to kill both sides, but I haven't done that yet. Overall, I think if you just look at the videos on the store page here, you probably know what you're getting into and whether or not you should buy it.

Fun game and great setting, theme, and story. However as a 4X game, if you're expecting 500-1000 hours of gameplay you're gonna be disappointed. I've played through it twice and that was enough to see nearly the whole research tree and every single possible unit and building, so I don't have much motivation to play again. I enjoyed those two playthroughs though. To make it worthwhile to explore the story of each faction by playing a game with them there would have to be a greater variety of gameplay.

Lots of smaller Quality of Life improvements over Gladius, but the graphics are a blur, you can't make out what's what in a game that is keen on details. Mechanically, it's basically the same game though, which isn't a bad thing, but it means that Gladius is the better alternative here.

This a "Yes, but..." review, with the emphasis on "but". it's OK, you can have some fun with it, but you will probably long for Alpha Centauri or something along those lines as you play. The game's biggest issue is that it forces you into a single mode: build units to attack. The game actively discourages you to build more 'cities'. City morale drops at a super fast pace to the point that you feel like all you are building are 'flag' buildings to improve morale. It looks as ridiculous as it sounds and it just isn't fun. A single city will do you just fine. Games are short, so short that in most games you won't see the end of the tech tree. And that's indicative of the other problem. You never ever settle into anything. Nothing ever feels like you are on the right track except for when you have momentum in a war against someone else. You'll never feel remotely satisfied with your cities, and you never feel like you are dominating the map, And the very moment you think you might almost be there, the game throws its weird mechanic at you in which it splits all players into two sides in a last ditch war. You chose a side, and then everyone goes after a number of special units. Once they are gone, game over. When do I get to feel that I conquered the map with my skills? Never. And all of this is set in a world that feels faceless. Sure, when you zoom in you can distinguish between the different infantry types and tanks, but that's not how you play. You play zoomed out. And for that you rely on icons that suffer somewhat from the same fate: a Crusader tank icon is nearly indistinguishable from the Cyclone tank, and don't get me started how often I put my Medic in the front lines because I didn't recognize it fast enough. Cities expand but visually it's all mush when zoomed out. Zephon is ok if you want a quick 4x and don't have time to get invested in a big campaign (there is none, and a single map plays like a short skirmish compared to other games). But if you are looking for something with substance, this is probably not for you.
