Just a shallow little RTS game, if you enjoy superficial games where the AI gets advantages over you, in a very rock, paper, scissors format, this is your game. Beware tho, it wont be long until this game revolves into monotony due to game-play cycle, and last of user accessibility for example, half of your game-play will exist around smashing the unit squads over and over, as build production cannot be automated. You can blame things like this on laziness, but the more you play this game the more you realize the clowns who developed it wanted it to be this way. Buy at you own peril, though do not pay full price, this game doesn't deserve it.

you'd think It's a good simple game to wind down with after work but it's way too buggy. Its' a 50/50 it'll crash during a skirmish or online. Local LAN doesn't work as well so you have to play online which is also buggy. Over all I like the game but I cannot recommend it.

I want to recommend because it is simple, classic RTS style fun; but with only 2 playable factions and a whole mess of balance problems I cannot.

9-Bit Armies is brought to us by Petroglyph, a studio founded by former Westwood employees. You can tell right away, because 9-Bit plays a lot like Westwood's flagship franchise, Command&Conquer. In fact, it plays almost exactly like one specific C&C-game, Red Alert, fromn 1996. And despite that game being almost 30 years old, 9-Bit Armies brings only a few new gameplay ideas to the table. And those are all either completely insubstancial or taken from later C&C titels. Which kind of begs the question why you shouldn't just play any of those instead. Because there is one thing the official C&C series has what 9-Bit Armies are severely lacking. And that is good story. A setting. Personality. Not that 9-Bit Armies doesn't have a story at all. It is about Faction 1, who are evil and want to rule the world, and Faction 2, who would much rather they didn't. Sadly the plot doesn't really move on from that much. The single player campaign stops caring about them very fast and instead spends most of its runtime pointing towards Petroglyph's older games and going "Remeber this?". Which only serves to make the whole fictional world feel even more unreal. Immersion is impossible. And that is a shame, because 9-Bit Armies' gameplay is, while unoriginal, not bad at all. It is a very well polished and well executed version of Red Alert's exact gameplay. But I am not a robot. Or John Carmack. I can't live of gameplay alone. And want the things I do in these silly games I play to have some kind of meaning. Context. Flavour. Or else it is just a bunch of blinking lights on a screen. And I really can't really get a feeling for what Petroglyph were really trying to do here. Why did they think that game should exist? What were their ambitions beyond "Eh, let's just make another one of those"? That uncertainty makes the game feel soulless. Generic. Like a No-Label Store Brand RTS. Music is great though!
