Quest: Escape Room Review – A Puzzle with No Payoff
Quest: Escape Room starts with an intriguing premise: you’re locked in a mysterious lab, solving puzzles to escape. The concept of an escape room adventure should be exciting, but unfortunately, the execution falls short in almost every way. While the game sets up a potentially interesting narrative, it fails to deliver a satisfying experience, leaving you with frustration and confusion.
Controls and Gameplay
The controls are awkward, to say the least. You can either use the arrow keys or the mouse, but neither feels intuitive. The lack of WASD controls is a major flaw, especially in a game where movement is key to solving puzzles. It’s clunky and slows down the pace unnecessarily. It’s as if the game can't decide if it wants to be point-and-click or a traditional RPG-style adventure, and the result is a mishmash of controls that never feel comfortable.
The puzzles themselves range from painfully simple to frustratingly obscure. There’s an overreliance on math-based challenges that quickly lose their charm. Instead of stimulating your brain or encouraging creative problem-solving, you’re left doing basic arithmetic that offers little satisfaction.
One of the most frustrating puzzles is the wire puzzle, which punishes you with instant death if you make a wrong move. One mistake and you’re sent back to a previous save, forcing you to replay sections you've already completed. This mechanic feels unfair and adds nothing but annoyance.
The Osu-Style Puzzle
Another low point is the Osu-style puzzle, where you have to click on lights that appear on the screen. Unfortunately, this puzzle feels like a poor imitation of rhythm games like Osu, but much slower and unresponsive. Instead of requiring any skill, it turns into a mindless exercise of clicking, and it quickly becomes a frustrating, tedious task that drags the experience down further.
The Story
The story, unfortunately, is where the game falters most. You’re given no explanation as to why you’re trapped in the lab or who’s behind your imprisonment. The narrative feels like a half-baked afterthought, with no real payoff. Random moments, like the inexplicable mention of "genociding dolphins," seem out of place and leave you scratching your head in confusion. There’s no character development, no motivation for the villain, and no emotional investment to be had. At times, it almost feels like the game itself doesn’t even know what it’s trying to be.
Visuals and Sound
Visually, the game doesn’t do much to stand out. It relies on standard RPG Maker assets, which feel dated and lack personality. While the title screen music is decent, setting a certain mood, the rest of the soundtrack is forgettable and doesn’t add much to the atmosphere. You can tell the developers were trying to create a sense of tension, but the lack of meaningful world-building or impactful story moments makes it hard to get immersed.
Final Thoughts
Ultimately, Quest: Escape Room is a frustrating experience. The lack of polish in the gameplay, the underwhelming puzzles, and the lack of an engaging story make it hard to recommend. The game doesn’t live up to its potential, and instead of being an engaging escape room adventure, it feels like a disjointed, half-finished project. Even though it's cheap, your time is better spent on games that offer more depth and enjoyment.
Final Verdict:
A mystery without purpose—your time is better spent elsewhere.
