I'm a 90's kid, so when I see a laser disco, future-retro casual title like this one, I play it. The overall mood is great, the puzzles are appealing, and M.O.M.... well it's Mom. The game drips with an atmosphere that immediately immerses you in deep nostalgia, and that's exactly what I was looking for. Luckily I didn't have any problems with the tutorial, so I can't refer to the bugs that others have reported. IMO the big selling point is Oddyssey's well-crafted 90s angle, which suits me very well. It leverages other aspects of the game and provides an overall pleasant and consistent experience. I have maybe 3-4 hours spare in a week to play a game and this title suits me perfectly. This title is instant on and I recommend it to anyone looking for such a cool old-school vibe. Lava lamp, Jarre's Oxygene and Oddyssey, hopefully soon again.

Right now, I would say add it to your wishlist and wait for it to get better. I got stuck on the tutorial mission where you put on your space suit. Up until that point, I was sort of having a good time. Collecting resources isn't amazingly entertaining and the snarky tone gets old pretty quickly. It's still in early access so I am hoping it can get better with time. The cartoon aesthetic totally works and the tone is light and fun, even if it does get annoying during the tutorial mission. https://youtu.be/7PoJr2XMQC4

Can't recommend - the constant MOM computer voice in the on a short loop is soo annoying. The angle of the cam when you are out in space makes it feel so awkward. I like some of the silly design, but the inside of the ship was like a doll house and a spaceship had a baby. And give the choice of my own name thanks

i couldn't make it through the tutorial. it doesn't clarify a lot of things it wants you to do and you're just looking at these vague prompts like "use right stick to expand your view" while you twist the right stick around and the view shifts but you didn't PRESS right stick like it wanted.....you have to deposit this ore in a tank and pull a switch. you get prompted to "press a to pull the lever" and it took me a several minutes to figure out i had to put up the device i used to collect/deposit to use the lever. the next line of the tutorial is "i'm glad you can follow simple directions!" and at that point i uninstalled the game and came to leave this review. it's not even that the tutorial was bad, but to insult the player when you can't even communicate the proper steps to accomplish what you want me to do? nah. oh yeah, the horrible computer "voice" that's just a buzzy noise seriously grates on my ears and was bad enough on it's own with it's unskippable dialogue that it's noteworthy as a separate and independent reason why i couldn't put much time into this game.

EDITED TO NOT RECOMMEND (while this resets the upvotes this review had, I feel the need to update due to recent events.) Despite a decent baseline of a game that could have been fixed and expanded on, the developers have abandoned it in an unfinished state and will not be updating it further. I had this marked positive while development was ongoing as it seemed promising; but once again an Early Access title has failed to deliver and shut down before being completed. This is now an unfinished game with no further planned updates. Original review below: --- EARLY ACCESS ~ Stay away unless you are willing to play test, deal with glitches and give feedback. What if FTL was built for casual instead of hardcore, focused more on gathering resources and survival mechanics than combat and dressed up like a children's game with cutesy puffy people all being bossed around by a computer named M.O.M. There you go, possibly the worst way to describe Oddyssey that I can think of. --- Why am I reviewing this game? Why am I still recommending it? Why didn't I refund it? Does it even work? I go back and forth over the years whether I'm in the mood to deal with Early Access, and I knew that's what I was buying here, so I'm not holding that against it. I wasn't even 30 minutes into it when the tutorial was broken and couldn't be finished. Skipping that and starting a new game and the intro movie isn't even the right size, with dialogue boxes partially off screen and unreadable. I knew right away that if I wasn't willing to put up with a game still in development now was the time to refund, but pushing through that I was still kind of enjoying myself. There's not a lot here, but it's a clever, very-casual relaxing exploration game. The graphics have a niche-cartoon appeal, but anyone turned off by that isn't likely reading reviews anyway, they already glossed over this and ignored it. Also don't let the images fool you, this isn't a fully 3D universe, everything is a flat world, even in space, but that doesn't really get in the way; it just keeps with the casual aesthetic so you don't get lost. The positives? The story is quirky-funny (maybe I'm easily amused), the resource gathering is simple and intuitive, the exploration and building are a pretty gentle learning curve. If you need a break from frustration simulators and frantic paced action games, this has a certain potential charm. Just be aware that for now, a lot of that potential is locked behind an unfinished game. Feel free to wait for Early Access to complete and the game to actually release if you're not prepared to participate in what's effectively an Alpha Stage (which comes even before Beta Testing) as there's still a lot of content (more galaxies, more features, etc.) that are being added (or at least have been announced, we'll see if they ever get added) And that's where I'm at, cautiously optimistic that the game might eventually be a casual resource gathering and exploration sim, but currently reporting a new bug or glitch about every 30 minutes while playing. I've written three bug reports just while starting up the game for this review. --- Bottom line: [strike]I'm tempted to not recommend this, but instead I'll opt for recommended with strong warnings. At least for now, I can always thumb it down some day if it sits in early access for another decade without progress. [/strike] ~ And my warnings were unfortunately true, development abandoned, no longer recommended.

I want to like this game but so far I haven't really been able to play it at all. I can't get though the tutorial because it seems that It gets hung up on various tasks that it asks you to do. And since the controls are locked and the other menus are locked I am stuck not being able to play the game at all. Developer, if you can't get though the tutorial then the game is unplayable.
