Red Dead 2 Online is definitely not recommended to buy. I left a separate review fro RD2 which is a fantastic stand alone game. RD2 online however is a mess of hackers exploiters and griefers roaming around with impunity, just being dicks to normal players just trying to have fun. Invulnerability hacks, infinite dead eye and aim bots, and even killing inside of your own "safe" camp sites. Do your selves a favour and avoid the frustration and give this a skip. Disappointing as we as could have been great.

Red Dead Redemption 2 Online (RDO) is a breathtaking journey into the Wild West that blends stunning visuals, engaging missions, and memorable moments with friends into an open-world experience that’s hard to match. Developed by Rockstar Games, RDO takes the stellar foundation of Red Dead Redemption 2’s single-player mode and expands it into a multiplayer frontier. After countless hours of grinding, laughing, and navigating the occasional frustration, here’s why I believe RDO is a must-try for Steam users, despite some notable challenges.
A Visual Masterpiece
Let’s start with the visuals—RDO is, hands down, one of the most gorgeous games I’ve ever played. The sprawling landscapes of forests, deserts, and mountains are rendered with jaw-dropping detail. From the way sunlight filters through trees to the dust kicked up by galloping horses, every moment feels like a painting come to life. The attention to detail in character models, wildlife, and weather effects sets a standard that few games can touch. Whether you’re riding across the plains at sunset or camping under a starry sky, the graphics make every session a visual treat.
Missions That Rope You In
The missions in RDO are a highlight, offering a mix of story-driven tasks, bounty hunts, and cooperative challenges that capture the spirit of the Wild West. Whether you’re robbing a train, tracking down outlaws, or delivering goods as a trader, the missions are varied and immersive. The role-based system—bounty hunter, trader, collector, and more—adds depth, letting you choose how you want to make your mark. Playing these missions with friends is a blast, with each role bringing something unique to the table. The storytelling and voice acting keep you invested, and the variety ensures there’s always something new to tackle.
Grinding with Friends: A Wild Ride
RDO shines brightest when played with friends. I’ve had some of my best gaming moments galloping alongside my crew, whether we’re hunting legendary animals, defending our camp, or just goofing off in a saloon. The grind for cash, gold, and role progression can be steep, but it’s rewarding when you’re sharing the journey. We’ve laughed ourselves silly over failed jumps, accidental dynamite explosions, or chaotic showdowns with rival posses. These moments of camaraderie and unpredictability make every session unforgettable, turning even the grindiest tasks into a good time.
The Modder Problem
Unfortunately, RDO isn’t without its flaws, and the biggest issue is modders. On PC, modders can disrupt lobbies, spawning items, teleporting players, or crashing sessions, which can sap the fun out of the experience. I’ve had moments where a promising mission or peaceful ride was ruined by someone exploiting the game. It’s frustrating, and while Rockstar has made efforts to address this, it remains a persistent issue. My advice? Stick to private sessions with friends when possible, or join a community of respectful players to minimize these disruptions.
A Game Packed with Depth
Beyond the fun, RDO has a lot to offer. The role system encourages creativity and strategy—do you focus on hunting as a trader, digging up treasures as a collector, or chasing bounties? Each path feels distinct, and the grind teaches patience and planning. The economy, while tough at times, rewards persistence, and unlocking new gear or horses feels like a real achievement. The game also captures the Wild West’s mix of beauty and brutality, immersing you in a world where every choice matters.
Respectful Community Vibes
Despite the modder issue, RDO’s community has a lot of great players. I’ve met folks in lobbies who’ve helped me out, shared tips, or just tipped their hat in passing. The game encourages a sense of shared adventure, and finding a good posse can make all the difference. Rockstar’s updates, while slower than some would like, show they’re still invested in keeping the game alive with new content and fixes.
A Few Other Hiccups
Aside from modders, RDO has a few other quirks. The grind can feel overwhelming for new players, especially with the high costs of some items. Connectivity issues can also pop up, and the lack of new story content in recent years is a bummer for those who’ve completed the existing missions. Still, the core experience is so rich that these issues don’t overshadow the game’s strengths.

The biggest issue for me is constant crashing. You wanna go to town for gun repairs? CRASH! sometimes even doing mission causes me to crash. sometimes when i go to camp i crash. Not to mention the other problem being modders, half the time i get done with a mission i get yanked across the map to a horde of players. All the roads in the game are littered with sampled carcasses i swear to god. Constant bone clacking noises i dont even know if it comes from modders. Ive been trying to do the trading system and i literally cant. NO ANIMALS ANYWHERE!!!! an entire plaine just...empty. I read up on why these issues happen and people are saying its a simple fix, just get into a solo lobby. heres an idea,ROCKSTAR..ADD A INVITE ONLY LOBBY OPTION LIKE IN GTA! but i suspect that wont happen as this games long dead in rockstars eyes and GTA is theyre cash cow. In short, if you wanna play online, play on console.

I’ve spent countless hours in Red Dead Online, and even though Rockstar has slowed down major updates, this world is still one of the most immersive online experiences out there.
The game drops you into a vast, living Wild West – stunning landscapes, dynamic weather, and one of the most beautiful maps in gaming. You can ride through snowy mountains, deserts, swamps, and forests, all seamlessly connected.

Almost any server you get into will have someone modding and being a POS. They can steal stuff out of your hands, they can god mode themselves, they can grief you. If it was just like cosmetic stuff or what ever, it wouldn't matter to me. Good luck playing the new update without being mauled by an invincible bear that will teleport you off your horse. Finally got that legendary 3 star hide? hope someone doesn't just teleport to you and kill you, or just take it out of your inventory form the other side of the map.
Edit- I hope you don't have issues with SA. You can be immobilized and SA'd by by a modder. I'm not talking about t-bagging.

Recommending because I finally got 1899 hours and have to mark the occasion. Otherwise, good game, could be better if the devs cared, besides the ones maintaining it. Also, if you make your character male, put at the most 40, 45% clarity on the whistle, or your character will forever sound like a child. Just like mine. Why we can't change it in the editor is something I'll never understand.
