Paper Beast: Folded Edition trades its native VR scheme for awkward gamepad controls, while preserving its creative abstract world exploration.
A unique world emerges around a highly imaginative art direction in low-poly aesthetics, beautiful numerical cumuli, stunning environments in a soothing color palette, and inspired living origami. There is nonetheless a sense of budgetary constraints that permeates throughout the title. The VR roots are still evident, where certain segments require the player to stand completely still for extended periods of time, or the impossibly awkward grab mechanics modeled after the likely more natural arm movements. The port nonetheless functions well enough to be playable, despite noticeable glitches. Use sand and creatures to terraform parts of the world. Melt snow and ice with a lava ball. Teleport through strange crystals. Afront terribly windy conditions. Free creatures, help them migrate, rehydrate, attach or unhook, use their help for transportation, etc. Unfortunately, most creatures are disposable and infinitely renewable, a missed opportunity to develop a bond with unique individuals along the journey that ultimately solves with an abstractly inconclusive narrative. The game also includes a full sandbox mode with weather simulation, rain, erosion, heat, wind and more, populated with creatures and plants from the main story mode. Collect pellets in story levels to unlock more sandbox tools and items. Has more in common with the game director's previous game, From Dust, with similar terraforming elements.
Positive

Unique and surreal living origami creatures inspired from real-life animals
Highly imaginative art direction
Abstract low-poly world worth exploring
Terraforming elements elevates it from the walking simulator genre
Full sandbox mode reminiscent of From Dust

Negative

Awkward grab controls
Carried stuff gets stuck in world geometry
Rudimentary interface
Uneven use of invisible walls to keep player on expected path
Long stretches without walk controls
Abstractly inconclusive narrative
