I'm going to recommend this game, with a caveat. I absolutely adore this game. It is a game that very much feels made for a specific kind of person, and that's me. But there in lies the rub. Apico is a very rewarding and satisfying game to learn and play, discovering all the bees, and then those goals grow into other ecological and environmental goals such as saving butterflies, cleaning the oceans, repairing the reefs and so on. However, the one thing you need to be wary of when coming into this game is it WILL overwhelm you at first. You are allowed to take as much time as you want, but it frontloads a LOT of information to the player, and introduces a lot of machines basically immediately that do various single functions and it can become very messy very quickly. But. If you can get through that learning period, or better yet, enjoy that learning period, and get into your bee groove, this game is fantastic. I love it, as a bee enthusiast. So I will recommend it, just be aware of what you're getting yourself into.

For whatever reason, this game hits real well with my neurodivergence. It's very chill, very grindy, and not totally true to Mendelian genetics (some changes to how dominance works so that bee breeds can be balanced and gameified), but it's a delight to me. It feels cozy and quaint, and you're not running your machines by hand for forever. Automation comes into play, helping things out a lot as you build your bee empire.

This game is for a very specific kind of people. I personally think it's fun but for the subset of people who like games that are grindy and one that you take at your own pace it's wonderful.
Pros:
- I really like the pixel art style and it's really pretty. And the music is peaceful.
- The puzzle solving to breed specific kinds of bee is fun, engaging, and challenging in the good way.
- I can be not a human character. :)
- I like the autosort. Silly but important to me.
Cons (kind of):
- shits confusing man. theres a LOT of moving parts (so to speak) in the early to mid game.
- this is a person to person con but for me, having ADD really makes it hard to stay on task and i do 15 things at once while getting 3 done. you'll get it done but you'll constantly have that feeling of "wait what was I doing? (1 hour 45 minutes later) OMG i forgot i was in the middle of breeding this bee and got distracted by making honey-soda and rebuilding the coral reef" skissue on my part but if you're like me this is the general play experience. dont get me wrong, I LIKE IT! I like the game.
thank the hivemother for wikis

You can tell there is a lot of love put into this game. I learned about it from looking up to see if Minecraft's Forestry mod was updated past 1.12.2. A lovely person, probably on Reddit, had introduced me to this game and said it was a very solid replacement and was also an incredibly fun game all on its own. I spent hours on specifically the bee functionality with the mod, so this was going to scratch that itch.
It went above and beyond. I was not overwhelmed by anything (I can see how those who aren't as familiar with Forestry might be, though!) and I was excited to see just how much more I could play around with. Features that were broken in the mod were fully fleshed out and exciting in Apico and feels incredibly unique. The places to explore are fun, there are some really cool mechanics with bee breeding, and the automation features that come later on in gameplay add to everything so much.
In it's own way, bee breeding feels like it's own sort of puzzle game. There are several different species that do different things and produce different things. Everything in the game has a purpose. Everything feels fluid. I also have not seen much for glitches, which is always impressive nowadays.
If you play modded Minecraft, you'll love this game. If you love nature and bees and butterflies, you'll love this game. It truly is laid back and there's no rush to it and the bees will thank you for it!

I've been playing this game non-stop with my girlfriend, who says its the best game that I've ever gifted her. This is a very unique and original game unlike the over-saturation of farming sims that we both grew tired of. I'd say Apico a very good game for couples, and I would really recommend this for those looking to play a cozy game with their partner. It additionally has a lot of content, which makes this game very good value.

First off, I just want to say that APICO is not a game for everyone. But some people will enjoy it, including me. Now the only problem I have for this game is the start. In the beginning, it WILL be overwhelming. VERY overwhelming. With all the different items, tools, machines, NPCs, bees, and books. But, if you are someone like me, who is able to figure things out and adapt to them, or even better, enjoy this learning, then APICO is a game for you. A pro to this game is that you can take everything at any pace you want to, no health bar, no thirst bar, no hunger bar, nothing. Also, I like how if you get confused about something, the answer will most likely have been explained to you already, you just need to go back and check.
Some other stuff: (spoilers)
-Kidnapping
-Butterflies, flowers, fish.
-Multiplayer
-The 4th dimension
-Learn how to read binary
Edit: I just achieved 100%! Just wanted to say that this game is amazing!

Ultimately I would recommend this game, but only if you really like games that make you grind, and/or if you have a strong nostalgia for the old beekeeping mod from Minecraft.
When I say grind, I don't just mean having to go out and chop trees for wood, rocks for stone, and harvest hives for honey; I mean even in the UI. Do you want to scrape a frame from a hive in order to get both honey and byproducts to sell? You will need to literally pull down a scraping button in the UI. Want to saw wood into planks? You will need to move and twist a UI element in a circle. It is like this for quite literally everything. The ultimate goal in the game, as I saw it, wasn't to collect all the different bees, butterfly species, and flowers, but to get to the automated crafting stations.
As soon as I saw how long it would take me to get there, I stopped being interested in this game. I don't mind grinding out hundreds of breeding bee pairs in order to get a new type of species to advance the game. I don't mind collecting wood, leaves, and other items to feed butterflies to get more caterpillars, or collecting a bunch of flowers and seeds to try and crossbreed them. That stuff is pretty fun, and if you focus on that, then this game can be great.
Unfortunately, there is a heavy grind to all of that to begin with, and if that was everything, I think that might be ok. But when you have to individually saw each log into a plank by clicking and dragging the UI element back and forth three times, or have to keep the honey harvesting device constantly spinning for it to work, that is where I draw the line.
I can see some people getting a lot of enjoyment out of this game; and I did enjoy it for about 20 hours or so. After that, I tried to keep going, but just couldn't do it. I would give this game a very lukewarm recommendation. I really want to like it and keep playing, but I just can't bring myself to do it. If you are going to buy this game, either try the demo and see how you feel about all the mechanics. I didn't try it unfortunately, so I don't quite know how far it goes; but you should be able to see what I am talking about in it.
If you don't want to try the demo and just get right into the game, I would highly recommend that you do not get it at full price; wait for a sale.
