Cruelty Squad is a game that assaults all of your senses until you gain the skill and knowledge needed to assault the game back. Once you have ground the game into the dirt for what it did to you and there is nothing left to accomplish, it asks you if you are proud of yourself. The words make you feel like you winced, but outwardly you have shown no reaction. You continue to punish the game. You just keep playing. You have enough money but you keep harvesting organs. You have beaten every level over and over again but you keep replaying them. You've gotten S ranks in each level but you just keep going for shorter times. Then one day the day comes for you to recommend the game to somebody and they tell you it looks terrible. They tell you they don't understand why anybody would play this game. The words make you feel like you winced, but outwardly there is no reaction.

Esoteric and possibly useful to have a guide but funny, challenging and engaging nonetheless.

Great style, and some interesting ideas behind it. Not nearly as deep and thought-provoking as people like to claim it is, and the core gameplay isn't as good as other indie shooters out there (and the store page blurb calling it a power fantasy is an outright lie) but still worth checking out.

The game is conflicting, it's purposefully very abrasive and borderline actively hostile toward its end user. I personally do not find the game very fun but that should not stop you for trying it out; my friend loves it however I simply don't see a reason to continue after giving it a quick whirl for an hour. Some things seemingly are locked behind a grind for no reason other than to be annoying, and the controls are equally and uniquely 'different' to about every other game you could play. Gunplay and NPC interactions are somewhat basic outside of the unique control style and some special enemies. As for lore.. Well.. If you're coming to CS for that go play literally anything else, and that's not even really a critique of the game, there simply isn't much purpose to the lore as it's simply secondary to the gameplay and levels. I'm not sure if I'd recommend the game or not, it really is a very personal decision you gotta make as you'll personally either love it or hate it.

I think a lot of people are pretending to like this game cause it's weird and has some cool mechanics. In truth it's honestly disjointed and annoying. I'll applaud some stuff (the very free flow to levels is great) but legitmately why would I ever play this game over hitman or deus ex.

Cruelty Squad is an incredible game built on a foundation of spite. In a sense it is an anti-game, and can be intentionally counter-intuitive (ie unusual reload controls and enemy AI). The visuals, for lack of a better word, are a clusterfuck of seemingly random textures and designs. However I found that after my time with cruelty squad the world gained a sense of cohesion. Totally unlike a realistic setting, but the world gained coherency in its inconsistency. Cruelty Squad features on of the most bleak and hopeless depictions of late-stage capitalism I have ever seen. With quality of life being almost infinitely low, and 99.999% of the world's economy being owned by a few mega-corporations. In a sense, the visuals aids these themes, as an exaggerated world order such as the one present in cruelty squad would fit in its exaggerated and chaotic world. Experimentation is the name of the game here. With many play-styles and augments to choose from, you can experiment to see what your favourite loadout is. Since Cruelty Squad lacks traditional RPG elements, you can comfortably change play styles without resistance. This is excellent, as it encourages you to find your own fun with the game. Slowly becoming better as you gain riches and knowledge is immensely satisfying. While hardly Dark Souls, the game can be challenging, especially in the beginning when you barely know what to do, let alone how to succeed. However if you can get over this initial hump, you will see the intent behind the gameplay. All in all, Cruelty Squad is an excellent game which is definitely worth picking up. 9/10

For whatever fucking reason, this is the first game I committed to getting 100% of all achievements for. Was it worth it? 100 times over.

God had no intentions on what we do to our bodies and our minds. We are the purveyors of our filth and our own vanity and our own greed. Money has no intrinsic worth, only the worth that we give it. Just like our bodies are worthless unless we say they aren't. This is why the money IS our body. The currency of arms and legs and the debt of sexual organs and nervous systems. All played out in a children's game of capitalism, a children's game itself. We are but our own puppets in our own biological, financial puppet show, all played out to an audience of sentient cartilage and neurochemicals. A living wake of abject terror that our own bodies have no value, that they will degrade, they will ROT, if they are not given the praise and recompense they do not deserve. A rat race of money, skin, and pride all in the attempt to obtain godhood. But godhood does not come to the flesh. Godhood does not come to the golden. Godhood comes to IT. The pure, unrefined, intrinsic IT. IT is not a feeling or emotion or idea. IT is the being of all creatures in existence and existence itself. A futile race for Godhood, a race to become the very entity that so mocks us. Mocks the flesh, the blood, the hold. God is not benevolent. God is cruel. This game looks like an anus.
