Man, I'm really sitting on the border with this one. Is it good..? kinda?
Look, no hate to the devs or anything, but the actual minute-to-minute gameplay of this one is kinda meh. The idea is pretty cool, the atmosphere is nice, the story as I've seen it is... cliche, but perfectly fine. There are unfortunately quite a few things getting in the way of fun when it comes to this game though, it comes close to being fun, and I'm certain its very fixable, but these things just really hold the game back for me as the game is currently:
Yes, space is big and empty, I get that, but is it really neccessary to fill the game with that much empty? The distance between points of interest is pretty dang far, often taking anywhere from a few, to several minutes pointing your hands directly where you want to go, and just waiting until you get there. Why can't travel be some fun little minigame with some kind of small challenge to boost your speed? It really doesn't make much sense to literally leave your player hanging for that long every time they want to go somewhere. This is worsened by the fact that you are in VR, and thus you must pay constant attention to the void of space to keep from going off-track. No AFK travel for you.
Combat in this game is weird. At any point you are able to spawn a maximum of X ships with a loadout of your choosing based on your unlocks. Emphasis on "at ANY point". You will always be outnumbered in this game, sometimes by a constantly-respawning enemy. The only way to actually win any engagement is just to keep respawning your ships every time they die. This completely defeats the strategy of the game, boiling it down to, "how long am I willing to wait to kill this enemy for the sake of victory?" This even caused a pseudo sequence-break for me, where the game wanted me to go around mining asteroids and kill small squadrons of ships around the system (a fairly monotonous activity riddled with more lackluster combat and travel time) to unlock the railgun for my ships. But obviously, not wanting to do that, I realized that ship-mounted torpedos do a small amount of armor damage, so I just went ahead and brute-forced the boss of the region over the course of like 30 minutes. Not only do your ships respawn, but the enemy doesn't even heal back if YOU die, so you can just repeatedly throw yourself at the enemy to win. This could be fixed fairly easily if the player's capabilities were actually more on-par with enemies, allowing you to actually kill them without respawns, as well as making it so that you actually have to win the fight the first time, instead of just returning over and over again or constantly spawning ships to slowly whittle down the enemies health.
I can't speak too much for the lategame, but the players weapons and their available ship weapons just don't feel that fun to play with. For instance, your starting frigate has just two slots for secondary weapons, one for each side. The reality is though, that this effectively limits you to just ONE secondary mount for it to be symmetrical, which is actually important for point-defense. Having four slots to work with as a minimum is all it takes to make ship customization interesting, instead of just "pick the thing that stops this from getting insta-torpedoed." Player handheld weapons are a fantastic idea, its just a shame they suck lol. Pinpoint strikes against specific enemy modules to weaken your enemy is just such genius game design, which separates this so much from any other VR strategy title. The thing is though, that using these weapons effectively is nigh impossible. Your weapons will do VERY little damage to any ship, and even if you full burst one of their secondaries, you are unlikely to destroy it. That assumes you even hit anything, which is further unlikely considering you fire extremely slow bullets while both your target, and even moreso you, are moving at crazy high speed. Hitscan bullets are really a must for this game, leading can be cool, but aiming is hard enough with the speeds and distances at play. Furthermore, enemy flak walls will tear you to shreds in an instant if you aren't constantly doing high-G maneuvers, which further incentivizes you to just sit back and spawn ships to kill the enemy. If the player was actually rewarded for getting in there and getting their hands dirty, instead of constantly being killed and then sentenced to a five-minute journey back to the battle from their respawn, the game would just be so much more fun.
Try this game only if you really think its really a fit for you. It's a little expensive for my taste, but it does what its promises as a strategic VR game with shooter elements, even if it has some flaws. I just wouldn't recommend it right now with its current problems, but with less down-time and some more interesting strategic action, I can see this being a pretty solid game in the future.

I personally was not a big fan of this gameplay. However, I could see others enjoying it a lot more than I did. It's a unique game for sure. You're basically Ironman in space, except you have to call in for support. You'll have to mine the area asteroids, but watch out for any roving enemy ships.
Enemies do a ton of damage. You are able to do several upgrades to give you a fighting chance, however, at least early on, it seems you are severely underpowered. So that means you'll be doing a lot of hit and runs. Call for support, watch them die fast, get your cooldown strike that does decent damage, maybe use your main weapon to bring down one of the smaller ships, & use your shield and get out of Dodge. Rinse and repeat. So far that's been the whole game.
You definitely need to find the upgrades so that you can break down some of the enemy defenses. I was actually using the wrong weapon at some point and found myself making zero damage to the enemy. You fly around in space like Ironman with your rocket thrusters. You can do FTL jumps. When you're in your ship, you do have smooth locomotion or teleportation, along with snap turning. However, I had difficulty getting back inside the ship with smooth locomotion (bug?) so I had to use teleportation.
Game is running on the Unity Engine. On my RTX 3080, with resolution scale set to 1.25, I was getting a steady 90 fps. I did experience a few bugs, like I said I couldn't use smooth locomotion to get back inside the ship. Also, I was stuck on the geometry of an an enemy base. You can set your height, so you can play comfortable seated.
There is a story in the campaign mode. You also have two other modes, but I didn't try them so I can't say much on that. The voice acting was okay. The story seems like it might be interesting. However, the slow paced combat & hit & run strategy that seemed necessary to progress, just wasn't doing it for me.

Do you know how to fly using nothing but your arms? No? I think you'll find this game will show you otherwise.
This game is as fast-paced as you want it to be. Good level of strategy involved; you can sit back and mastermind your AI assets through fights or you can dive in and get involved directly to do things like pin-point strikes on weapon hardpoints. There were a few points that had me stumped until I realised the latter was an option, and then it was a whole new game.
The concept used here really could go deeper as a whole other game, but this is absolutely fine for what it is. I imagine the Outbreak mode, fighting off increasingly difficult waves of enemies while managing resources, is a lot of fun with friends.
If you've played Freespace 2, imagine instead of a TAG missile you get to point your fist at a ship and watch it die in a blaze of coherent energy death. And it's called the "Command Dagger". Good times.

Sure, the graphics are kind of blocky but that is a pretty fun space shooting/strategy game. It is quite unique you use your grip buttons to propel yourself and your main hand to shoot block with off hand. The game is very chaotic and they kind of just throw you into it which is fun and confusing as you don't really understand what is going on around you at the start.
Eventually you get your bearings and start to explore the sectors one by one each one has asteroids to mine and enemies to kill. The enemies other than the small type ships are all VERY powerful you basically have to run in get a few good hits and try to fly in circles before you are low health and need to run away to get health back.
There are fleet mechanics to this game where you call in ships to take on the enemies, they are powerful but do not have much health and die very fast.. you have a seemingly unlimited supply of them so you end up just spawning them as fast as they die and really don't have time to do any fighting of your own! Which is a shame because I enjoyed the shooting in this game, scopes are nice and the long guns don't feel too awkward to use while flying at whatever '150' velocity is. My only complaint was the player weapons seem too weak, even the heavy weapons seem to barely do anything.
This game is pretty good, I had fun on my first play but I found it very challenging to get a hold of the flight mechanics and shooting and ended up spending most my time spamming reinforcements.

Now THIS is a hidden VR gem! I was a little hesitant, it just seemed odd, the concept of space travel in nothing more than a suit. But the more you play the more it makes sense and while it may not be super practical IRL, it makes for a hell of an experience. It could make sense as a spec ops type deal. Either way it is A LOT of fun. I really enjoyed the campaign, I wish it was longer. I still have yet to unlock all the research, so there is still lots left to do.
Definitely worth a play! Especially if you enjoy Jet Island, this is a much better version.

Really enjoyed this game. The POV is quite unique. Somewhat similar to BattleGroupVR if you've played there, but shifted far towards 1st person. Seems like there's a lot of great room for expansion and replaying. I really enjoyed the fleet management aspects of the game overall. Easily worth $20.

Space is big. Really, big. You won't believe how vastly hugely mindboggingly big it is. I mean, you may think it's a long way down the road to the chemist, but that's just peanuts to space. So instead, wrap your head around Orbital Strike VR and get involved in some awesome Indie game VR space action. Then you don't have to go outside, or off the planet to experience space. If you like sci-fi (and if you twigged the quote at the beginning of this review, you probably do) then you'll likely enjoy the campaign, and generally whizzing around in space.
This is proudly sci-fi indie VR (AAA buffs will be disappointed with graphics, I'm sure) but the depth and gameplay loops are there to keep me playing. Great fun. I'm really looking forward to seeing how the campaign progresses. I'll be back to update the review when I'm done.
aaaaaand....That's me done.
Awesome sci-fi campaign. What a universe. Such lore. So much more to explore. I love the universe that's been created. It's great sci-fi. That's it. Action was fun and didn't get in the way of the story. Had a bit of figuring out here and there when it wasn't obvious what to do, but a nice surprise when it worked out. There's much that could be done to make it more visually appealing, but then again, it's got the makings of a cult classic as-is. Fantastic.
