Do nevermind that the game has an old schoolish artstyle, as that's one of its many charms.
It is all just as you do remember from the old Doom games, except that you can only turn sideways and can't move diagonally while exploring.
Things couldn't have been any more simple; You do get in, explore, find enemies during your exploration at fixed places all the time that do reset each time you move upstairs / downstairs / simply elsewhere, and so you need to be prepared to face them more than once in case you decide to return back to explore the other way around.
The majority of the characters can use submachineguns and rifles, with the exception of our Ren who can't and can only use shotguns and handguns that everybody can use.
It is necessary to reload after running dry, which can either be done during the same turn at the cost of mana points or use a turn for that, as the game does follow a turn-based system with some really low odds to land critical hits, miss the target, or do normal and expected amounts of damage that can however still vary. The magazines for the respectable weapons are to be bought or found during exploration, so some ammo management is there.
Besides the obvious melee attacks that everybody can throw, some being special and costing the mana points, certain characters can also use special magic attacks for a guaranteed hits, albeit at the price of the mana points that can be somewhat difficult to recover in case one overdoes it.
There are a total of five playable characters, each with a different and fairly rich personality and history tied to them.
Albeit the history isn't explored deeply through the game, it is done well enough to give you the gist and something to relate with the character or understand them a lot better, at least to a certain extent.
Some habits will stand out right-away, some will need to be observed by progressing through the story.
Out of that, there are a few side characters aswell, some bosses that you gotta fight included, but you don't get to dig a lot about their background. Those are truly just there to attempt to impact the story in just scratches or majorly, regardless of whether they succeed at that.
The story overall is leaving the player in the dark, making them interested in discovering something more and mysterious that's on-going and Ren is to investigate that to earn some money, as the descriptions of the game do imply.. And that there are ways to obtain the money, but that's not something I will be describing here. I will just mention that despite there being about two to six different such scenes for Ren and her acquaintances, the text there is repeated once read through a few times, but skipping feature is a thing here, so no worries I suppose.
Now, something that should also be noted is that this is a kinetic RPG, more or less.
You can determine the ending by your actions, but the main story - The investigation - Is very much set in stone and you can't change what's gonna happen, how is Ren gonna investigate that. It sounds like a deal breaker, but it's acceptable as the length was about fifteen hours for me, and I had lots of fun.
The key lies in understanding the basic mechanics; Once done, the game is incredibly satisfying and even easy to play. With the option to play a New Game+, so to start with previously gathered progress from the previous playthrough, it gets even better as there are some unique items that can be obtained for each character that do dramatically impact the difficulty of the overall game, but also increase the amount of possibilities that were previously limited or locked out due to the lack of .. Funds, statistics.. Simply said, numbers, as that covers it all.
I have very much enjoyed the story with all its characters, and only got it because it was on sale and I was captivated by the old school graphics.
Despite me mentioning Doom, I have never actually played it and only reminded myself of it upon seeing this, that is also combined with the text that I'm so familiar with from the visual novels that I had to try it out. And it worked.. It worked so well, I can't wait but to look out for yet another dungeon crawler of this type.
I'd say that this does about cover it all - The rest is to either be found by browsing the discussions or in-game, but those parts might be spoilered a little, hence why I didn't really mention them.
Because this game does sorta depend on luck, although it rarely ever comes into the play..
Good luck, happy reading, and have fun!
