Great Castlevania 1 game (NES), nothing less, nothing more.

The game is enjoyable overall. It channels a very strong Castlevania vibe and mostly nails it, especially in the NES-style stiff controls when it comes to jumping. The music is great, atmosphere is on point, and while there are a few spikes in difficulty (less with bosses, more with falling platforms and jumping in some of the later stages), nothing that cannot be overcome with a few retries. There are no actual "lives" in this game, you just go back to the beginning of the part of the stage you started at, so there are technically checkpoints as you get through a particular area. This is welcome as it keeps the challenge but eliminates the frustration of having to continue and start a stage over again.
I have not tried the unlocked modes but plan to.
This is a solid 7.8 out of 10.
