Don't go into this expecting another Hollow Knight. A supremely simple yet charming game with a cute-if-basic art style and just enough charm to keep you interested if not engaged.

I can't in good conscience recommend this game. It took me about 6 hours to beat, including spending a bit of time after getting to the credits, trying to find some of the missing fountain pieces. I didn't bother to 100% it though I did get all the achievements (not difficult to do). The pixel art is good, and environments are charming. And the price tag is cheap. Even so, this game has very little to offer. Standards like double-jump and ranged weapons are upgrades you get during the playthrough, along with roll, but there is very little sense of exploration or progression. You can "level up" by gathering green stones as currency and turning them in to one of the other mice you rescue along your journey, back at home base. Most enemy types I found more annoying than not, and given there are only two biomes in the game, they aren't very plentiful. The warp/save points are poorly spaced, and do not allow you to select amongst them. You simply have a single warp at your home base that takes you back to the last location you warped from. Luckily, no progress or currency is lost on death. If it were, I may not have bothered to complete the game. I also experienced some bugs. Specifically, opening the map, panning around, and then closing the map sometimes caused my player to freeze, and nothing I tried would unfreeze them, so I had to quit and restart. This, together with annoying enemy types and lack of good placing of warp points are what inform my overall recommendation to not play this game, but otherwise it is simply an uninspired game with lackluster gameplay.

"20% positive? It can't be that bad" And then it was. Nice pixel art and animations are about the only praises I can give here. Two extremely repetitive areas (cave and forest), no enemy variety, bosses with one attack each, a terribly restrictive and poorly placed teleport system, level design that feels like it was procedurally generated, awkward unrebindable controls, repetitive music, annoying sound effects, nonsensical dialogue, basically no story, and even with the short runtime it seems as though the game wasn't finished. I can imagine these devs making something good with more experience under their belts, for sure. But micetopia feels like it took the foundation of a decent platformer and put in zero of the design aspects or soul needed to make it enjoyable for even the most morbidly curious of indie fans. Avoid it like a rodent-induced plague.

Well made, but poorly designed. The game is beautiful graphically with a very charming pixel art style, and I didn't run into any bugs for the duration of my playtime. However, that is where my praise ends. The maps are boring and repetitive, the music is boring and repetitive (and on a surprisingly short loop), the enemies all feel poorly designed, especially in the forest area. There are several blind falls in the cave section while traveling downward where I fell onto an enemy I couldn't have possibly known was there or reacted to in time. The bosses seem to all have one single very telegraphed attack that you can easily roll/jump out of the way from before smacking them a few times and repeating. Worst of all, the fast travel points have nonsensical placements - the first one I found in the forest area was not along the main path, but placed so far out of the way it was almost faster to just take the exit from town, and there was not another one for well over a dozen screens after. It's a promising start for the dev, but it feels like a game I would have found on Kongregate back in the day, played for a few minutes, and abandoned.

I beat the game but still haven't found how to turn down the volume or change the language on the options menu... To be honest I wouldn't even call this a game. Outside of the beautiful graphics and good animations: there is no story, only a handfull of enemies, and the map is nonsensical. I get it if it was a one dev first game project but I can't even know who or how many people worked on this as there are no credits. And I gotta comment on the map again: Why would you make a map thats just a straight line of random designs, with nothing but the same 2 enemies and barrels/vases so when you die you gotta go through the same 5-10 rooms of nothing? For everyone captivated by the gorgeous pixel art: Do not buy it. For the devs: I'm sure you're all great people and I support you passion for games, but I had to be honest.
