Spellbearers is really easy to pick up, especially for a casual gamer like myself. It being a multi-player game makes it even more enjoyable. The bosses are so creative, it's intriguing to find out who or what the next boss is going to be.

The game feels really good to play. The controls are tight and aiming feels smooth and natural. I spent a good 30 minutes just using the buttons without realizing you could use the other joystick even. the bosses are an absolute standout with incredible design and unique intuitive vulnerability mechanics. II really enjoy the art design from the almost nightmarish bosses to the cartoon player avatar the game is without a doubt delightful to look at. The power ups were all enjoyable as well. Each one had its uses and purpose and i always felt obligated to snag them whenever possible. The game is definitely a challenge but you start to get accumulated to the mechanics very quickly. It's a game where you get better just by virtue of playing rather than leveling up. The music is incredible and i would listen to on its own if it was available. On the downsides i did tend to lose my character in the particle effects leading to my death more than a few times, and the sights and sounds of the various attacks and power ups can be overwhelming. That means i can only play this game for short bursts before my eyes are struggling to keep up with the action on screen. However, what i did play was fun, frenetic, and exciting. The bosses kept driving me to come back for more just to see what the next design was. Overall i would definitely recommend this to someone especially if you're a fan of twin stick shooters and medieval mage aesthetics.

[08/20/23] I will preface this review by saying I do not normally play games like this, and I have never played Super Smash TV before, the game that this is supposedly influenced by. That said, I have had a good deal of fun trying out this game and have a few things to say about it. WIthout further ado, let's begin. Some small issues I encountered when playing: - When booting up the game, the resolution defaults to 320x200 60hz. I was unable to see any of the menu items clearly. It was not without some assistance before I could select the appropriate menu options to adjust to my desired resolution (1920x1080 60hz). As a consequence, I was not able to read the opening sequence without having to change the resolution, which can affect one's initial impressions of the game. Of course, this issue could vary depending on what system the game is installed on. - No option to stop autoplay text. During the scenes that describe the story before getting into the gameplay, you are given two options: Press [A] for Next, and Start for Skip. There should be an option to toggle autoplay text, for simply user convenience. I do not think I have played much twin-stick shooters in the past, if at all. To keep this review brief, I will list my pros, cons, and thoughts when it came to my experience in playing this game. Pros: - Game plays smoothly and controls are intuitive enough. - Art style is quite appealing for this type of game, background art and character design are serviceable. - Music is pretty good throughout and adds to the atmosphere of the game, especially during the final boss. - Bosses are well designed and fun to play against, especially the final boss. Cons: - Low amount of content, I feel there is definitely room to add more content especially in terms of progression. Starting off, the game, at least on the first level, can be a bit overwhelming with all the new spells. I can see the appeal of figuring out the spells on your own though. Perhaps more smaller levels in between the boss-centric ones that only spawn a few certain types of spells at a time (aside from the spells you learn later on) before ultimately adding them as an option to randomly appear once the player becomes more accustomed to the types of spells there are and how they work. Mini-bosses can be created as more content. There's a lot more that can be added, but I think it does not necessarily have to be too complex. There's definitely a roguelite element too that can possibly lend itself to this game. - Lighting can be a bit of a detriment. The low lighting could just be by design choice, but I think for instances where the Spellbearer is facing upwards, it becomes harder to discern where they are because of the black cape that does not glow. - Screen Spam. This might actually be tied to the lighting, but it becomes hard to register where things are when a lot of things are going off. Of course, one could always not fire their magic and focus on dodging. Maybe change the lighting of similar enemy attacks and one's own magic? This could just be a design choice. The lighting in some parts I think can be adjusted. Notable Thoughts: - I found it interesting that the points do not reset when dying (losing all your lives.) - Also, dying at the boss level does not reset you back to the beginning of the entire level, which I see as a good thing - There are moments during the final boss where if you die and not have enough speed boosts, there will be places where death becomes inevitable (such as after the lasers stop firing and the body moves a lot quicker. Could be simply game design choice, so I don't necessarily consider it a con, just means that dying once can snowball into dying many more times until one can pick up enough power-ups. - (Possible bug?) There are times where it feels I don't die or lose a life, even though I am at 0 lives. Perhaps there is a mechanic I am not aware of or it is simply a bug. All in all, I think this game has a lot of potential and can definitely be polished further to create a truly magical experience.

This game has good potential and so far, playing this game has been very interesting and I enjoyed playing it for the most part. However, it severely lacks content outside of the story. I was able to complete this game in under an hour and a half unfortunately. I would’ve loved to see more love and time put into the spells and skills into this game. Because whenever I was playing, I found myself relying on just four separate skills being the lightning, flamethrower, shield, and the tornado the most. Every other skill was just there, and it really had no importance when those other skills did the job better. So, if the game had a skill-tree or other kind of upgrades certain skills or changes their effectiveness it would give the player the opportunity to come up with creative ways to explore and get through the game as well as builds/setups or even one ability to be able to hold on to until a dire situation. Overall, I thought this game was good and could be even better though the game has its pros and cons, and this is my opinion as well as a list of my thoughts on this matter. Pros • Fun playing multiplayer with friends • Great abilities and skills • Maps and enemies were designed good. • Fun and interesting boss fights • Special rooms to find with each map (exciting feature to have) • Good setup with controls as well as settings (Just wish there was a colorblind mode.) • Good sounds, music, and sound effects Cons • Needs a main character design update (Honestly, I was thinking the enemies as well as the bosses stood out and looked better than the main characters of the story.) • Lighting (Even with me being colorblind, I struggled to see certain foes in dark rooms and have no idea what is going on.) • Better Aim (Certain games like this allow you to aim entirely at 360. However, this game you’re only able to aim horizontally, vertically, and diagonally which puts you at a disadvantage most the time.) • Lacking Content (Story feels like it can be better improved upon as well as needing more unique game-play features to increase the overall playtime of this game.) I give this game a 6/10.
