Anno 1404: History Edition is a refined version of the acclaimed city-building game, offering a blend of deep strategy and immersive world-building. Set during the Age of Discovery, players are tasked with establishing and managing settlements in both the Occident and the Orient. The game's core mechanics revolve around balancing resources, expanding territories, and navigating complex trade networks. The addition of the Orient introduces new production chains, goods, and architectural styles, enriching the gameplay experience.
The game's visual design is both detailed and functional, with a clear distinction between the two cultures. The Occident boasts grand European-inspired structures, while the Orient features intricate designs and unique buildings like the Noria, a traditional water-lifting device. This cultural diversity adds depth to the game's world, making exploration and expansion more engaging.
One of the standout features of Anno 1404 is its complex supply chains. Players must ensure a steady flow of resources between their settlements, managing everything from raw materials to luxury goods. This interconnected system requires careful planning and foresight, as shortages in one area can have cascading effects throughout the empire.
The game's diplomacy and quest systems further enhance its depth. Engaging with various factions and completing quests not only provides rewards but also influences the political landscape. This dynamic interaction adds layers of strategy, as players must navigate alliances and rivalries to achieve their objectives.
Anno 1404: History Edition also includes the Venice expansion, introducing new gameplay elements like espionage and multiplayer modes. These additions provide fresh challenges and opportunities, keeping the gameplay experience varied and exciting.
In terms of performance, the History Edition offers improved stability and compatibility with modern systems. The transition to a 64-bit architecture allows for better memory management, reducing crashes and lag during extended play sessions.
However, the game is not without its challenges. Some players have reported issues with the AI, noting that opponents can become resource-deprived and less active in the late game. Additionally, while the game offers a comprehensive tutorial in the base version, accessing it through the History Edition can be cumbersome.
Overall, Anno 1404: History Edition stands as a testament to the depth and complexity that city-building games can offer. Its intricate systems, combined with the rich cultural settings, provide a compelling experience for both new players and seasoned strategists. While there are minor issues to address, the game's strengths far outweigh its shortcomings, making it a worthy addition to any strategy enthusiast's collection.

One of the best games in the Anno series. I played the previous versions a lot, and with this one, I'm happy to return to it once in a while—there's still so much to do.

Well, im abit biased on this one but back in the days as a kid. I sneaked out of bed to get on the laptop of my father and start up Anno 1404. Rocking hundreds of hours, HUNDREDS when I had it still on a disk. Sleeping the next day in school because I played all night. Everytime I start up the game nostalgia hits so hard that there is a tear coming up!
LOVE it

The game is a great 5 out of 5. The scenario's are fun. The gameplay is a huge upgrade from 1701. The interaction between orient and occident are so cool and full of hope.
One can't really say anything bad about it, just a little nitpicking here and there. Also wishes for more content as the game is so well made.
I totally recommend the game, but know this a well:
I also owned Anno 1404 (+Venice) before the History Edition came out.
First: It's quite the audacity, that one needs to "buy" the game again and not just get it for a smaller fee. (It wouldn't need to be free) Even if it is already in my possesion and there are just some bugfixes with no new content.
Second: Some time before the History Edition came out, many had problems with their ubisoft-accounts (me included). So when the History Edition came out, my old ubisoft-account couldn't be saved by the official support and all my achievements went to narnia. So I had to make a new account for ubisoft-connect.
Third: The shit doesn't stop there. You can't play offline, as you always need to be connected to ubisoft and every other time, there are DRM-updates.
Forth: Multiplayer doesn't run smoothly. I often play with a friend in the winter monts and we had regular problems with disconnects. (One needs to say, that the instant back-up works most of the time, but not always.) So saving often is a must or go with auto-saves.
Last: Whenever ubisoft feels like it, they can close the game and say: "That's it. Play something else." And then that would be it, for my nearly 400 hours account.
Seriously, why can't my profile be local and multiplayer-games be hosted by me or via steam.
