Monster Hunter Stories 2 (2021) is the 24th game in the series and a "sequel" to MHS1. The gameplay is the same, but you can have an NPC buddy help in battles which is nice. The story makes no sense. Is Red supposed to be the main character from the first game? Because his "Guardian Ratha" has both eyes, and no one seems to even remember the TRUE hero. The combat got way too f*cking hard. I'm not going to waste more hours grinding when I just wanted to enjoy the story. F*cking disappointing. 5/10
it's a shame they removed the element-altering mechanics from the original game but aside from that nitpick stories 2 is just more of what made stories 1 great. 100% worth it on sale, idk about full price though

First of all, I liked most of the game, I completed the whole game and new game plus, all the bosses in challenges, all solo. It's a Monster Hunter Pokemon game. In this game you steal monster egg's rather than "catching them". It's a little sad/bad that all monsters do not have 2-3 world moves. It disturbs the team setup much of the time? Also, some of them make no sense, some have one but could have had 2, even 3. Had been better if developers had just designed some "HM's" like in Pokemon, that we could give the monsters. Nergigante cannot fly etc. but he should be able to. You can match and upgrade your monster DNA/skills/abilities for bonus. Can be confusing in the start, but makes sense when you get the system. However, you need to absorp the skill from a monster and give it to your monster. It's a terrible system btw because you can have 100 monsters and you cannot "search" for specific skills, if I remember correct. Had been much better if you could had absorped the skills to some book for a much better "overview". There are five followers, all having different monsters/weapons and skills. There is a dude named "Reverto" which is a monster hunter "big badass"(he is afraid of bugs thugh), he uses no monster - because hunters hate monsters and kills them, it was what Red tried to change with his Rathalos. Reverto deals 2-3 times more damage than any other follower(I once saw him deal 111 though xD). Why is he this strong? If I want to have Avinia with Frostfang, I can't because her damage is much worser than Reverto. I don't like Reverto! "Dude, look at my muscles"....Stfu ape super saiyan....Funny with japanese games, either males are very feminine or super big muscle breads? Take "The Witcher 3", he is just normal/slightly trained. An NPC should not be main damage? Neither should a game be based on having one specific NPC? Mandatory NPC. Poor design imo, this pulls the game down for me. The whole "rider and hunter" idea is squishy. Compared to World/Icebourne/Rise, we are riders in MHS, we understand monsters, communicate with them instead of wounding them and following them to their dens to kill them while they bleed "tears".....Like with "hunters". The game is about Riders right? Screw hunters then? Also silly that a small human can do more damage than huge monsters....Riders should be at least twice stronger. Even if you win "head to head" you lack dmg or take too much damage, once I was literally just throwing healing pots, and I almost puked by such a game design, while Reverto killed the monster. I don't get this design? Irl person buffing an NPC? Hmm....I do get why monsters deal more damage, of course, since they are huge etc. But I don't get why Reverto hits twice as everything else in game, or why Kyle same age as our char deals more damage etc. Buff our char? And the other NPC's to Reverto level!? You also need to learn what type monsters become when enraged due to "HtH" etc. The best monster you can get in the game, is one of the first ones(won't spoil it), a herbivore. It's special attack is amazing and works great with Reverto, it's also pretty funny. You can time the moster special with charged bow too. Distribution of monster elements can be lacking, there are no very strong water monsters? Or dragon except for Deviljho, Stygian Zinogre. You get Palamutes later on. There is a little fat narcissistic cat named "Navirou" following us around(japanese and their cats). I think people overexaggerate, I think he is quite funny, especially the scene where he is lazy and wants to ride on Frostfang "RAAAAAAAAWWWWWW!"(translated, FUCK YOU!) xD, I had to laugh a lot irl. He is also damn annoying, little bastard. Later on he becomes a Pikachu cat xD The combat is okay, however, get used to our character dealing significant less damage, you can boost it later on to some extent, especially if using weak elements against enemies, it can be stressing later on, and you need to time every round carefully or the opponent take Molten Tigress will rip you apart. I did make some high crits, but nothing close to Reverto crits. I did find a perfect rolled "Deviljho" that deals almost as much dmg as Reverto! Sometimes even more. Deviljho can juice herself up. The armor in the game is great designed and the dev's made a transmogger. Graphics - it's a game made for Nintendo Switch? So it's pretty bad ofc. Yet graphics are less important if the game is great, and the game is great. (I btw like the dance the two women are doing in the big city!). I give the game 8,4/10. With more QoL improvements, I would give it more. Better than many newer Pokemon games etc. imo. Btw - I know the game is made for kids! Yet it annoys me, that I am always some small boy in all japanese games!? Honestly, how many adults play these games too? Pretty many right? Also, we are always much weaker than all other in the games? I grew up with these games, and I still like the game designs, ideas etc. It's the same in newer Pokemon games nowadays, small feminine boys wearing strange clothes, mandatory suit and tie almost(I don't like these clothes and it proves nothing, some of the most evil men on Earth wear suit and tie! They are often stupid men too etc. Suit and tie doesn't automatically make you clever, wise, or a morale/good person, especially not a good person), we are a small boy and there are these super buffed women too etc. Lol, I laughed when I saw them in "Pokemon Violet". I am indeed not saying that Hollywood/movie big drugged muscle males are the right male "image" either(I am in fact directly against that, whole industry is fake too, making young people think it's how you should look etc.), but why not just a normal looking boy like in Pokemon generation 1, 2, 3 games? Why castrated boys/men agenda(Is it females making games now or? You know what Freud said about "penis envy" etc. lol). All people in these games nowadays have 20 different hair colours too(I do assert that these people irl have issues, yeah, like goths etc. often genetically unlucky born so they do other stuff to get attention not really helping their case, I have seen some girls too where I thought "she could actually be pretty if she stopped that shit").....There is some sort of "genderless" agenda going on in "certain" games, boys looks like girls and girls looks like boys. I have no problem with these people and such at all, they should just not try to force it on children imo. Just "normal" boys and girls. I even heard there is a conspiracy that "they" spread chemicals/estrogene and such to make all males wussies? Doesn't matter much because 8,2 billion humans will destroy Earth regardless.

Monster Hunter Stories 2: Wings of Ruin is a captivating departure from the traditional Monster Hunter formula, offering a turn-based role-playing experience that emphasizes storytelling, exploration, and strategic combat. From the moment players embark on their journey, they are immersed in a beautifully crafted world filled with vibrant landscapes, diverse ecosystems, and a cast of characters that bring the narrative to life. The game’s art style strikes a perfect balance between the familiar Monster Hunter aesthetic and a more whimsical, anime-inspired design, which makes it accessible and appealing to both longtime fans and newcomers alike. The world is expansive yet inviting, with lush forests, arid deserts, icy tundras, and mysterious ruins that beckon explorers to uncover their secrets. The sense of discovery is one of the game’s greatest strengths, encouraging players to venture off the beaten path and encounter a variety of monsters, each with their own behaviors and habitats. The core gameplay revolves around capturing, raising, and battling monsters, known as Monsties, in a turn-based combat system that emphasizes strategy over brute force. Battles are dynamic and require players to think carefully about attack types, weaknesses, and environmental factors. The game introduces a unique "Stamina" mechanic that adds depth to combat, forcing players to manage their actions carefully and plan their moves accordingly. The addition of riding Monsties during exploration and battles is a delightful feature that enhances the sense of companionship and immersion. Riding allows the player to traverse difficult terrain, access hidden areas, and engage in special battles that are both fun and engaging. The bonding aspect is also central to the experience, as forming strong relationships with your Monsties unlocks new skills and evolves their appearances, further personalizing the gameplay. Character development and storytelling are prominent aspects of Monster Hunter Stories 2. The game features a compelling narrative centered around the mysterious Wings of Ruin and the ancient secrets of the Monster World. The story is well-paced, with moments of humor, drama, and intrigue that keep players invested. The voice acting, written dialogue, and character interactions are of high quality, adding depth to the experience. Side quests and optional hunts further enrich the gameplay, providing additional challenges and lore to discover. The game also includes a variety of mini-games and activities, such as fishing, collecting materials, and customizing your Monstie team, which add layers of replayability and personal expression. The customization options are extensive, allowing players to tailor their Monsties with different armor, skills, and appearances. This system encourages experimentation and strategic planning, especially when preparing for tougher battles or exploring new areas. The game's interface is user-friendly, making it easy to manage your team and inventory, even for players new to the genre. The graphics, while not cutting-edge, are colorful and detailed enough to create an immersive atmosphere. The animations during battles and monster evolutions are smooth and satisfying, adding to the overall polish of the game. The soundtrack complements the visual style perfectly, with energetic and atmospheric tunes that enhance the sense of adventure and wonder. Overall, Monster Hunter Stories 2: Wings of Ruin is a beautifully crafted RPG that successfully expands the Monster Hunter universe into a fresh and engaging genre. Its emphasis on storytelling, exploration, and strategic turn-based combat offers a welcome change of pace from the mainline series, while still retaining the core themes of monster hunting and companionship. The game’s approachable mechanics, charming presentation, and rich world-building make it accessible to a broad audience, yet deep enough to satisfy seasoned RPG fans. Whether you're a fan of monster collecting, role-playing, or simply looking for an immersive adventure, Monster Hunter Stories 2 delivers a well-rounded and rewarding experience that stands out as one of the most charming entries in the franchise. Amount of time required to complete the game: ~50-60 hours (could be higher or lower depending upon a variety of factors) Amount of time required to get all achievements:>200 hours (could be higher or lower depending upon how efficient you are at finishing them) Amount of time required to 100%:>400 hours (could be higher or lower depending upon efficiency) I define completing this game 100% as getting every single weapon and armor in the game, finishing the Monsterpedia, Monstiepedia, Gene Book, Gallery of Story Cutscenes, Gallery of Kinship Skills, Gallery of Double Kinship Skills including all add-on content, completing every subquest on the Quest Board at least once (again, including all add-on content, as well as all Trial, Tourmanet, and Online content, getting every one-time item from Melvine Inc., finding all of the Catavan Stands in the game, and upgrading every armor and weapon to max level, and finishing both the Elder's Lair and Secret Elder's Lair. Monster Hunter Stories 2: Wings of Ruin follows the story of you, the player, as you go through the rites of becoming a Monster Hunter on a fateful day in Mahana Village. Of course, not everything goes to plan, as shimmering red light can be seen on the horizon. You quickly go into the woods and after a lot of story, you are entrusted with Ratha's egg by Ena. You go back to the village and start your adventure. In terms of the story, it was pretty good up until the part where
Ratha gains the ability to Fly
, and then it's kind of just filler until the last hour or two. The
main villian of the game is very easy to predict who it will be
and the last bosses of the game aren't that difficult. Overall, the story was pretty good, but didn't stick in my head for a while afterword. This game is your standard Monster Hunter fare, with the exception that you are a Rider, and you form bonds with Monsties that you hatch from eggs that you gather from Monster Dens around the world. Some are more powerful than others, and some have more useful skills than others. There are quite a few different locales that you can visit, but you will need to backtrack once you get Monsties with certain skills so that you can go through and collect everything in the previous areas. This part kind of aggravated me a little bit. Monsties also come with a grid of Genes that indicate the abilities and supports that they have. It is a 3x3 grid, and usually, there are some spots that cannot be opened, and there are some spots that you will have to unlock either through leveling or various other means. Again, some Genes are harder to come by than others, and certain Genes can only be found on certain monsters (more on this later). Eventually, you will learn to combine these Genes together (of the same time) of the same type to increase their power, and also be able to move Genes from one Monstie to another, sacrificing the Monstie you are moving the Gene from in the process. There is a book of Genes that you can fill out, but you won't be able to fill it out until late into the Post-Game. This is where my sticking point was. I only had two or three genes left, however, the Monsties that I needed to genes from have all sorts of other genes, and ALSO only show up in Rare Monster Dens, which are quite a lot rarer than regular Monster Dens. On top of that, they have a low chance of actually having the Genes that I was looking for. I ended up stopping playing this game needing only 3 Genes to complete my Gene Book. This game has you playing with yourself and an NPC, which brings into clear focus a lot of problems when it comes to the AI of your partner...they can decide to waste valuable healing items on you when you can handle the healing and other quirks like that, but they are competent enough during the main story and even the post-game that this shouldn't cause you any issues. You get a variety of partners to choose from by the end of the game and post-game, and each of them have their own strengths and weaknesses. This game has online missions that you can complete with other players, however, since this game came out so long ago, there is usually no one in the lobby that would be willing to help you defeat some of the hardest online missions in the game, but I was able to get by with AI partner on almost every online mission. The main sticking point that a lot of people have is with the current DRM incorporated into the game, The Enigma Protector, which is a Russian run company. I have spent probably 50-70 hours reading up about this DRM and the company itself, and I have seen a lot of arguments for both sides (it being malware and it not really doing much). The main thing it does is prevent modding. I am neutral on this point. So, pros, neutral, cons: Pros: +Pretty well fleshed out story, though isn't too rememberable. +Very well fleshed out Gene system that allows you to really make some Monsties have some ridiculous skills/supports. +Overall gameplay loop is very well fleshed out and is entertaining, to a point. +Pretty nice online missions, but you will have trouble finding people to help you unless you have friends that are willing to help. +A nice variety of places to go and biomes to see in the world. +Music is absolutely on point. +Pretty robust partner system, each with their own strengths and weaknessess.. +Really need post-game dungeon...with an evil twin... +Works great on Steam Deck Neutral: Enigma DRM - You can decide for yourself whether or not this is something you want to deal with. Negative: -Some of the Genes in the game are too rare/too hard to find. You shouldn't have to spend 20-40 hours doing the same thing over and over just to get one Gene added to your book. Extremely frustrating. -Partner AI can be pretty bad at times; healing you when it isn't needed, attacking when you don't want them to, etc. -The hardest Online Missions can only realistically be comepleted with more than one human, one human and one AI Partner isn't enough to get the job done. -In order to get every Catavan Stand in the game, you have to be able to complete the Secret Dragon's Lair up to Floor 9 (I believe, haven't played the game in ages). This dungeon is the same as the original dungeon, but all of the monsters are much harder and do not show you how much health they have left. This can be quite a daunting challenge for those just wanting to get every Catavan Stand in the game. Overall, this game is very good, and I can give a slight recommendation and would recommend to get it on sale if you are willing to deal with the massive amounts of RNG as well as the Enigma DRM. P.S.: Deluxe Edition Razewing Layered Armors are amazing.

THIS GAME IS TRULY ABSOLUTE CINEMA. Played this game when it first came out on the Switch. Replayed the first one a few months back and now I just finished the sequel. Monster Hunter Stories 2 is a masterpiece. Genuinely top 5 games of all time for me. This game is better than the first, but the first is still worth playing if you enjoy Monster Hunter and turn based combat as much as I do. MHST2 has a cleaner feel to it, the combat is simple but there are so many little things to pick up on. The gene system is brilliant, and you don't even have to interact with it if you find it tedious or you do not want to min/max. I personally love egg hunting for genes, and creating the perfect team. AND THE MUSIC... I MEAN DO I EVEN HAVE TO COMMENT ON IT? The MH team ALWAYS brings their best when it comes to music, and this game is no different. These games fill my heart with so much happiness. The story may be cheesy, but let's be real... the power of friendship always wins. (im sorry) One of the only games I will rate a perfect 10/10 <3
