I cannot play this game. It feels like they just exactly copied FTL and then added some stuff, but it's just too similar for me to even want to entertain going further in the game.
It looks as if it has a few more things than FTL, but it's an identi-clone. It is one thing to be inspired by other game designers and by other games, but quite another to exactly copy it. Make your own game.
I am sorry that I cannot comment on the quality of the game, I don't know.

Have you met FTL's quirky little brother?
---
If you haven't played FTL yet, get that instead. It's still the superior game in this style. However, if you've played FTL enough to want more, then this is a pretty shameless attempt at cloning FTL that hits most of the same beats with just enough variation to be interesting at this price point.
One thing the game does offer that is notably different from FTL are multiple campaigns and the ability to choose different modes within some of those campaigns.
Choosing different modes changes how you approach a campaign play through:
Time-limit: You are being pursued by an enemy and need to keep moving forward or lose (This is the standard FTL campaign style)
Hot Pursuit: You are playing Catch-Up, chasing an enemy that is getting farther and farther ahead of you. You could slow down and explore, but you might not catch back up to them in time. This is reverse of FTL and you have a limited number of jumps before they are too far ahead.
Espionage: You are surrounded by powerful enemies. You can take your time but you'll need to remain stealthy and avoid them until you are strong enough to complete your mission.
Exploration: Casual mode, take your time and explore, you have a boss to kill in order to win but he's just over there waiting on you to finish puttering around. This is a mode a lot of people asked for in FTL, just be aware that it really does remove any sense of achievement since there's no pressure on you to bother actually taking any risks until you've had time to become over powered.
With six campaign/stories (3 unlocked from the start) not all of them have every mode available, but it is at least variety. More than 30 different ships that can be unlocked to play with and each with very different styles, instead of all being combat ships some are cargo ships, medical ships, etc. This further enhances your mode choices since you don't necessarily need to focus on combat right away in exploration or stealth modes.
I could criticize a few things: the writing is a bit childish, the graphics aren't going to win any awards and the music is adequate but really kinda simple. And one more thing: What's with the name? It doesn't actually make any sense, you're a captain and you go out fighting/exploring, I have no clue what that has to do with being a "Starship Inspector" and I think the title got lost in translation along with some of the cheesy dialogue in the stories…
None of this should turn you away from playing, but there's a reason this game is $4 and not $20.
Beyond that it's copying FTL pretty closely with vague attempts at adding new things: like fights versus up to 3 enemy ships simultaneously, but the game balance is still heavily RNG based and component pricing doesn't always feel fair either, but those are pretty minor issues overall.
I've spent a couple hours with it so far and it's certainly worth the $4 price tag. I don't know if it will have the 100's of hours of replay value that FTL offers, but there's more than enough here to justify trying to find out.
---
Bottom line: If you've exhausted FTL to the point you need more, this is definitely worth a look.

First of all this review is written while the game is in Early Access, so whatever I write here might or might not apply to the final game.
This game is a clearly a FTL clone, in itself this is not a bad thing, they have some interesting different mechanics that make it potentially interesting to play.
However playing the game doesn't give any of the vibe which made FTL so great, it most of the time gives just a lot of frustration because the UI is very unintuitive and bothersome. Something that could(and should) be accomplished in one click ofter requires 5 or even more clicks to complete.
Furthermore the english used in the game feels like it is badly translated from chinese.
I really hope the devs will fix these issues, cause the game does have potential.
At this point however I cannot recommend this game.
TLDR; If you are thinking of buying this game, go play FTL instead.

It's fine if you really want more FTL to play, but there's really no reason to choose this over that unless you've already gotten everything that you possibly can out of it.

I will be more than happy to change my review/recommendation at some point in future. At present, though, I cannot recommend this game.
As a game inspired by FTL, it does little to capture the feeling of the original. I appreciate it is in early access, but I feel this is just 'too early' early access.
Pros:
- The biggest one is the fact that its a FTL clone, which I enjoyed a lot. At this point, it is possibly the best thing I can say
- There are clearly good ideas somewhere down there, but they are just too rough and untapped
Cons:
- The music is just godawful. FTL was no London Symphonic, granted, but it was just about passable, and somehow blended in. Here it does not... Just switch it off and play something from your own playlist.
- Overlapping buttons. Particularly 'continue' button over 'airlock' button. Many a time I have ejected my crew by accident when closing a window, ruining my run.
- One tactic to rule them all. Just target enemy weapons with everything. End of.
- Multitude of subsystems doing... practically nothing in the grand scheme of things. No point in focusing fire (see above)
- Bugs. Once I started a battle with my crew member stuck outside of enemy ship, in a position he occupied just before the jump from previous encounter (earlier, I sent him to wander around a trade station). On other occasion I could not switch back on my subsystems in the middle of fight (no damage or any other issue that I could see). On many occasions, I have found a bonus item (Cube), which later was nowhere to be found and so unable to install it.
- No sense of drama or engagement. I caught myself sending text messages in the middle of a firefight, while my ship was just chipping away at enemy weapons room...
- Too many empty systems with few encounters. Running out of fuel is mostly a question of 'when', not 'if'
- Balance. Entry level ship quickly ends up with just one weapon (the other needs rockets which quickly run out), and you never seem to scrape enough to get an upgrade. Because of empty systems. And because when you do get to a shop, you must buy fuel...
- ...Which doesn't matter much, as you just keep targeting enemy weapons room anyway, and win after 5 min and a sandwich
So, all in all, I wish the devs all the best and will be checking again in some time to see where this game is going. No regrets on spending the money, though. The goal of matching (or surpassing) FTL is an ambitious one and deserves promoting. There is just a long way to go.

Tried the tutorial on this, it refers to corners that don't exist, the tutorial window popup can't be moved, those two things make feel bad to me. Gonna run the tutorial again. I kind of feel like it wants to be in a large screen resolution, but i don't see a setting for that.

Because the tutorial is bugged i can't recommend the game. it also tells us to look in corners when stuff is clearly on a side. Sometimes it says a side when the stuff is in a corner.
I think the tutorial is for a beta version, it needs attention.

It's not good, I only payed 50p for this though so no point refunding. I love FTL and have played other FTL clones and most are better than this. Putting aside the confusing UI and the tutorial which doesn't really explain everything; the game is very glitchy to the point where you can jump to other systems and the glitch refusing to show anymore information will continue.
FTL perfected the simple use of other weapons, this pointlessly made them annoying to bring to action.
Skip this one guys, if you're looking for an FTL clones "Shortest Trip to earth" "Crying Suns" or even "Space Rogue" are much more enjoyable.

Not ready to be sold, even on sale it was too much. Getting my money back. Sad, the concept seems sound, but there just isn't much game there yet.
It is a shame, it really seems like a game I would like, but it is simply under developed.

I've only played this game for less than an hour at the time of the review, but I can already say this: if you liked Faster than Light at all, then get this game.
Starship Inspector is a rogue-like game set in space which has a more open-ended campaign than FtL does. From what I saw in the short time that I have played this game, it was 99% good things. Veterans of FtL will easily be able to adapt to the game's controls, and will already be familiar with the style of gameplay.
Difficulty: as of the writing of this review, I have only played easy (just to see what the game was about). Easy is, well, easy. Looking at it as a FtL player, it's really easy. However, there are additional, harder difficulties, so if you want the same type of hair-tearing out experience as FtL then just bump that sucker up.
Graphics: They're good. The load on the computer is very light, and the only time the game lagged to any noticeable amount was when time was sped up to times 5. Any old potato can run this game.
UI: It's a bit clunky. If you simply jump right into the game without doing the tutorial, then you will be a bit confused for the first half hour or so. The tutorial provides a pretty complete overview of the UI and how to use it, though. It just takes a bit of getting used to.
Bugginess: it's in early access at the time of this writing. Expect a bug here and there, although I haven't encountered any game-breakers.
The only bad thing I have to say about Starship Inspector is this: there aren't any shortcuts on the keyboard, that I found. Aside from moving around the camera and pausing the game (which is immensely helpful when you're learning your way around the UI), I haven't found anything such as selecting crew members or weapons quickly, to open the map, open up your cargo hold, or execute a jump. However, I am sure that the developers are aware of this and plan to implement something akin to that. After all, it's only in early access!

FTL clone which is NOT a bad thing. Lots of RNG. Customizable. Graphics look identical to FTL which is acceptable. I love FTL and I feel that the creators of this love it as well.
Poor choice of game name "Starship Inspector" in my opinion. Makes it sound as exciting as "Space IRS Auditing".
I am still new to this particular game and am finding myself dying often in the early stages, but about the same in the early days of FTL before I learned the system better and got a good break on the RNG.
For the price, it's an amazing bargain. Highly recommended, especially for an early access game, this is the kind of game designer I would want to support. I wish you all the success with this and hope you do very well.
Great job! Can't wait to see what the final project will look like.
