I've had my fun with it. If you enjoyed XCOM you will most likely enjoy this game as well.
PROS:
- like xcom
- diverse classes with multiple builds
- loot hunt
- diverse enemies
- dynamic combat music
- personalize your squad with different cosmetic choices
- turns where everything comes together are immensely satisfying
- veteran mode gives you new loot and more missions to play after the campaign
CONS:
- boring story and uninteresting characters
- some class builds are just straight up better
- samey missions
- a few very annoying bugs that force you to reload because the game gets frozen in a turn or interaction
- jack often gets reduced to picking up crates before the mission ends
- some modifiers on veteran mode are just straight up unfair like enemies get +40% extra evasion or you can't use grenades

This was a random buy for me. I enjoyed the main series, so I thought I would give this a try. It was little frustrating at first, but once I got the hang of it, I really enjoyed it.

The game is similar to xcom , without the long term planning, tension, defensive play and strategic components.
What’s left is pure short term tactics , a linear story, very nice graphics and heaps of fun. The gameplay is a lot more aggressive and fast paced than xcom but both are very good in their own right - it’s a bit like Aliens (Cameron) vs Alien ( Scott ) I guess !

Fun game and a good addition to the Gears series. Mainly all combat focused, doesn't have base building etc. Gets about 2.5/3 hours on Steam deck. Averages 60fps well on Steam deck as well

I was waiting for this game to "get going" but it never really does. only 5 classes and you can only bring 4 units per mission means you dont really need to get more than one unit of each class.
The skill tree is slightly better than xcom 2 for sure but still not enough to really justify getting lots of units and try different builds.
writing feels like someone watched 80s action movies and thought they were "high art". no self awareness what so ever feels like.
idk, 5/10 probably

This is pretty fun but tough TBS game. Don't get too attached to any of your units. The 'COGS' are meant to break in this game. It sucks possibly losing their perks and upgrades, but don't always give them the best stuff. Try to keep an even mix of troops because you never know if any of your 'Hero' class characters will be on a cool down unavailable due to mission requirements. You can choose how you want to customize each character's skill tree, but I have found trying to use complimentary skills across specs to be beneficial so far. This game will punish you for bad choices and force you to restart a mission and alter your tactics until you get it right. I redid the first boss like 4 times to be able to get it worn down and deal with the trash the level was putting out also.

This is the all out action/arcade version of XCOM. Very little background/off-the-battlefield strategy required but great fun in each battle and very well executed. If it is in a sale - go for it!

Update:
I finally beat Gears Tactics. I must say I'm pretty happy with my Gears Tactics experience compared to XCOM 2, mainly because there's not a mechanic that forces you to restart the entire campaign. Gears Tactics isn't the best tactical RPG on the market and it's certainly not the worst but there's fun to be had. This is a great game to get into the genre as well and also great for gears of war fans. Overall I feel that there could've been more mission variety and a shorter campaign without being forced to do 3 side missions after doing a main mission. Would've been nice to get more respec tokens throughout the campaign as well, I felt that I had to play it very safe. After 31 hours I'd say I got my money's worth. There's an endgame but I'm pretty bored of doing the same 5 mission types I do not intend on getting to experience that. If I had to rate this game I'd give it a solid 6/10.
Combat
- The combat in Gears Tactics is very fast paced which is something I enjoyed a lot. You can play defensively as well and force the locust to come to you. You have a variety of weapons (locked to survivor types), to fit your needs. It's very satisfying getting your sniper to a vantage point and popping enemies back to back. The alternative is bumrushing with grenades which is just as fun. I would like to point out that I found that MOST of the time my shots would land, and didn't find myself getting frustrated with that. The main gripe I had with combat is that the enemies would spam overwatch too much, sometimes they'd get as close to you as possible and just put up overwatch so you can't move, it makes solo plays nearly impossible without stealth.
~ pros:
- fast paced
- shots usually don't miss
- using grenades is pretty fun
- decent enemy variety with unique behavior for each
- allows for variety of strategies and tactics
~cons:
- enemies spam overwatch
- very easy to get overwhelmed
- healing is useless on insane difficulty
- boss fights are drawn out way too much
Units / Survivors / builds
- There's 5 of units in this game each with their own skill tree and weapon type. There are also hero's who are the main characters from the campaign. They're cool but they don't have anything unique in terms of abilities. There's a decent amount of build variety but if you play on the highest difficulty, you'll be heavily penalized for bad build choices and not focusing on damage output. It would've made sense to allow Support and Vanguard unit types to swap between the lancer and hammerburst. Everything else is interchangeable with the units such as their armour, grenade type, and cosmetics. You can change every survivor's name except for the heros. Jack is a unique hero, he was pretty useful and sometimes would be the only reason I'd win a mission. I don't like that there's achivements tied to using him.
~ pros:
- good build variety
- you're always finding new survivors to recruit
- armor is interchangeable between unit types
~ cons:
- only 3 respec points per chapter / possible to brick builds
- very limited cosmetics / armor variety
- missable achievments tied to recruiting certain survivors and using Jack
Gearing / Cosmetics
It felt to me that the loot boxes were originally supposed to be paid microtransactions but than were changed into being free rewards. Tying builds to RNG lootboxes kind of sucks but you'll eventually get what you need. Unlike other games in the genre, there's no weapon variety but instead you upgrade weapons with weapon attachments. The rarity of the box determines the rarity of the items you get, so you can't get a epic (purple) from a rare box (blue).
~ pros:
- you're always getting a steady stream of these loot boxes
- they aren't monetized
- there's a mission type that allows you to grab up to 8 of these boxes in one go on top of the mission rewards
~ cons:
- RNG tied gearing
- sometimes you'll get duplicates that you can't trade up
- not much variety in armor type nor the stats they offer
- very limited customization
Story / Missions
Honestly, I skipped all the cutscenes as I'm not into the lore of the franchise but they do explain what's going on and what your goal is. In terms of missions, they're only 5 mission types. So you'll be doing the same 5 things through out the entire campaign. You'll basically be doing 1 story mission split between one of the 5 types and then 3 mandatory side missions before you can do the next story mission. This format prolongs the campaign so much and even more so if you're struggling with the misssions. There's boss fights for each final mission of a given Act, they're all unique but are drawn out way too much with over saturated health pools and infinite spawning mobs that can and will end you if you aren't careful.
~ pros:
- you can choose which mission type you want to do for the side missions
- they always provide loot boxes for completing the main objective
~ cons:
- very repetitive
- drawn out campaign due to mandatory side missions
- includes missable achivements
- the boss fights are drown out
- the final mission / final boss fight is god awful even on normal difficulty

Original Review:
This game feels a lot more polished than XCOM even though it may not be as complex, it's still a ton of fun. I came over from XCOM 2 because I got tired of units constantly missing their shots and the time limit for campaign. I'll probably update this review once I hit endgame / beat the campaign.

You need an XBox-account to log into the game. Otherwise you'll be stuck in the loop of Log-in->An error has occured->You need to log in (and can not play the game).
Well.. no. Not another account. Ubi-Soft accounts, Sony-Accounts, X-Box accounts.Everyone and their mother wants you to create an account to play their games. It's enough. I have a Steam account. That one should suffice.
