Apparently no one plays on line. if you choose online nobody ever joins at the table.
I really chose to practice any way, but there is a caveat there. if you let the computer get control of the table it will finesse every shot until there are no choices and then it will shoot a pass. of course now all the balls not yours are gone so it's pretty easy to clear the table :-(
Update: I found something more to my liking, Challenge 9 ball Solitare. Your not playing against the computer. I started out in practice mode 8 ball and it was like playing against a grand master or whatever, i had it run the table on break and never even got a practice shot!

The controls: not so good
Perspective of the game is great but the controls need a lot of improvement. I'm not a fan of the drag and push to hit the ball - and also the spin controls are not good too
