I rarely give negative reviews on Steam because I usually try to find positives in whatever games I play. However, I grabbed Rampage Miami since I saw it was by RetroWave developer, RewindApp, whose nostalgic synthwave-themed games seem to be right up my alley as a retro gamer and synthwave fan. Unfortunately, I've decided to refund Rampage Miami. While the sale price was $0.55, I just didn't have enough fun with it to decide to keep it, considering its rough edges.
Don't get me wrong: for that price, it's not terrible but with money being as short as it is for me right now, I'm prioritizing purchases even down to that low of a price. I'll tell you what, I can definitely see something fun under the rough edges. The gameplay isn't the worst I've ever experienced, and the idea of an action movie fantasy in a low-poly synthwave world is brilliant. It's not GTA like some expect, it's more like an arcadey third-person shooter. Think Just Cause if it was set only in a city, didn't have ridable vehicles, and had a low-poly synthwave feel: the idea is to just cause as much chaos as possible.
Again, the ideas here are absolutely not the reason I refunded/gave a thumbs down. No, the reason I did so is because it's a bit janky, you can't turn off the VHS-style filter (which, with the bright colors, can be eyestrain-inducing), it has achievements but they don't unlock on Steam, the list goes on.
At the end of the day, I can certainly see some fun behind Rampage Miami and I really do hope that RewindApp considers making a sequel with more polish, more features and better overall execution because with the right development, this game could easily have been a fun, affordable action game!
