Played years ago and decided to come back with some friends after seeing it on sale. People must be so bored that they just wait around and actively try to get new players to quit. Had fun years ago but now its just pure grief. Not really worth any amount of time or money.

Literally awesome game super fun if you arent the type of person to quit immediately when you fail, it really challanges you to become better and better as you encounter more skilled players

If you ever feel like playing a game at the end of a long day, let it not be this for at least your first few sessions . If you really have to, do yourself a favour and start in Safer Seas. This way, your urge to instantly Alt F4 > uninstall > [strike] refund [/strike] will greatly reduce.
Else, your likely newbie experience:
Sail on voyages, defeat Megs and even the Kraken to stack up on loot for 2 hours, Just as you dock to turn it all in for gold coins, some pesky pirate that tucked away on your little boat disguised as a treasure chest since who knows when, appears and double gun you down every time you respawn. While in between your deaths, where you'll spend every precious seconds waiting on the Ferry of the Damned to get back at them, they sell your sweat and tears.
By this time, you'll either:
1) Refund, because you take video games too seriously and can't stomach the loss, but you've passed the playtime window and this game will forever be collecting dust in your library.
2) Decide to git gud and binge hours upon hours of youtube videos to learn the ropes to hopefully be able to exact the same piracy you've experienced on others.
3) Accept the gameplay, and focus on story aspects (aka. Tall Tales) of the game, knowing quite well (or not) that even this does not keep you safe from 'em.
4) Take this advice, and get a mic. Mic saves lives.

played since launch. got really tired of the buggy pvp. when they announced safer seas i was stoked. instead of it being a better pve experience, they handi-capped pve only players. felt like a slap in the face. will not return untill they uncap safer seas and let people play the game how they want,. not being forced into a toxic player base that loved to hurl slurs at other players.

Super toxic for new players. My first two missions I got hunted down by veterans and laughed at on coms about how my team is obviously newbies and bad, and they continued to steal our valueless stuff.

This is no longer a good game. It used to have a charming, consistent, and enjoyable gameplay but after the purchase of the studio by Microsoft the updates have become worse and worse. The goal of this game is to ride on the initial momentum and instead of adding features and game mechanics or fixing growing issues, the simple goal of this game is to sell you cosmetics and the season pass.
SOT is now buggy, laggy, full of hackers, SOT 'partners' who get random players banned, hitreg, food reg, etc. All of these issues are considered no longer important to fix (as the devs have stated) and instead they insist on pumping out shitty cosmetics to run around on hacker-filled and buggy servers. Save your money and time, go play a game where when you get a hit, it registers. Even Team Fortress 2 at this moment has vastly less hackers.
Until they focus on practical updates rather than adding garbage for money, choose literally any other game, maybe cookie clicker?

Fun game that has unlimited potential. Although is a multiplayer focused game, adding a solo only ship type would make this game 100% better for player retention, at least for me.

The game itself is fantastic—the ship and wind mechanics, PvP battles, and especially the stunning wave animations make for an incredible experience. But in its current state, I cannot recommend it. The game is plagued with exploits and, worst of all—cheaters.
But hey, you can just report them, right? Sure! You just need to follow these SIMPLE steps:

Pre-record all your gameplay or use an instant replay feature (Don't have a high-end PC? Too bad!)

Manually gather evidence and put together a solid report.

Submit the report through a long, outdated browser-based process with strict criteria (such as capturing the cheater's nametag—which is much harder than it sounds).

Deal with ridiculous limitations—only five evidence files per report, each under 50MB. If your files are too big, you’ll need to upload them elsewhere.
Easy peasy, right? And even if you do all that and receive confirmation that the cheater was banned, it's just a minor inconvenience for them. Why? Because of ban evasion. Without going into too much detail, they can simply create a new account in under five minutes—without even repurchasing the game.
But I still like the game. Can I give feedback, suggest solutions, or discuss the cheater problem with the community?
Whoa, whoa! Easy there, champ. Turns out, that’s not allowed either. Apparently, players are only supposed to report cheaters and trust that the devs are “working on it.” But hey, give them time—it’s not like this game has been out for over five years, right? 😃
Here’s part of a response from a staff member on the official Sea of Thieves forums:
"[...] Dropping anchor here as while we know this comes from a good place and of wanting to make the game better, and we do as well, the forums is not the space to discuss solutions when it comes to these things. This is because only the internal team know of what is and isn't possible and it is not something that is easily solved or has a quick solution. [...]"
To summarize:
Reporting a single cheater takes far too much time. And if we consider the time a player loses at the hands of a cheater, let’s not forget:

You could lose a boat full of treasure (representing two or more hours of gameplay).

You could lose an Hourglass streak that took several hours to build.

And now, on top of that, you’re expected to waste more of your time filing a detailed report—a job that shouldn’t be yours in the first place.

To be fair...
They do fix exploits—eventually.
But if you don’t mind a game infested with cheaters, go ahead—it’s a great game.
And always remember: they're working on it. 😉

A very, very fun game to play with friends. My number one piece of advice would be to try and just have fun and not take this game super seriously. If you are playing on normal servers, sometimes you're gonna get attacked, and lose, and it'll suck. But if you just take it and move onto the next adventure, you'll have way more fun! And sometimes you'll win a PVP battle, and it'll be awesome, and you'll come away with a tale to tell...which is what it's all about right? Forget the gold, live for the 'fame and glory when you sail together'!

It's a great game with a lot to offer when it works perfectly. Currently though it is in a slump with many issues plaguing it like cheaters, network, server stability and new "exciting" re-playable content. If you're new though there's many hours worth of fun content for you to experience.
P.S always remember the most important rule which is that the loot is not yours until you've cashed it out, TRUST NO ONE!
