I dunno. It feels like it exists just for an excuse to have fear style combat. The story seems like it is trying to do somthing but i have no clue what even happned. graphics and performance and great. for unreal engine anyway. i dont regret my time. but nothing here felt inspired. it just sorta happned. i dunno. its maybe a 7 out of 10 at best.

TREPANG2 is exactly what is advertised on the tin, bombastic action inspired by the FEAR series and for fans of slowmotion and terrifyingly gory and explosive action. Be advised that the game is rather short, I've completed about half of the side missions and all of the main content and it took me just under 4 hours, and I feel like if TREPANG2 focused more on its core premise, then they would probably have more time to develop more raw content. TREPANG2, while a glorious slowmo shooter at its core, sometimes tries to be something more than that and I feel like it rather hurts the experience than helps. The horror elements were fine at the start, but by far the worst mission - Site 83 - feels so out of place and so weird that things like this were probably better to be cut out, or left as side missions. There is references to F.E.A.R, SCP and even the Backrooms, which is a bit strange. I feel like TREPANG2 sometimes lets loose a bit and forgets what it advertised to be - which is not always a bad thing, but here I feel like it is. The core premise in the story - with the cycles and all - is good though. If I forget the weird unecessary horror elements the story had, it's just about enough of a drive to get you through the levels. The levels by themselves are mostly great though. With the absolute highlight being Jorvik Castle, which is an insane, huge level that I'd even dare to put into a top 10 list of best FPS levels of all time, which says a lot. While the obvious lowlight of the game being the aforementioned Site 83. TREPANG2 is crunchy, gory, boomy and sells the "relive the F.E.A.R. series" idea pretty well. Though its bane being the short length and over-delivering in some unecessary aspects.
A Brutal, Bloody Love Letter to FEAR, Doom, and Unapologetic Fun
In an era where most games are bogged down with unnecessary fat, Trepang2 stands out as a rare indie gem that cuts straight through the bloat and focuses purely on delivering raw, unfiltered gameplay. It's not always refined, but when it hits its stride, it hits hard. At its best, Trepang2 manages to combine the fast-paced shooty fun of Doom, the signature bullet-time carnage of FEAR, and the tactical flexibility of Crysis, blending all three into a glorious cacophony of slow-motion slidekicks, shotgun blasts, and shattered glass. The updated Unreal Engine 4 visuals paired with the sheer brutality of the gunplay create a hypnotic shooter trance that brings the best of all three worlds into a savage, satisfying equilibrium. But the combat’s rawness also begins to show its cracks as the game progresses. The lack of enemy variety coupled with simplistic AI means it can’t quite replicate FEAR’s dynamic combat flow. Instead, enemies often rely on sheer numbers and inflated stats to overwhelm you, making fights in less well-designed arenas feel one-note and frustrating rather than tactically engaging. The story, on the other hand, is surprisingly captivating for what it is. Despite the outwardly generic sci-fi-military veneer and sparse NPC interactions, the game leverages its limited content well by constructing an effective narrative backbone. It fosters a genuine connection to the world and its characters. The camaraderie you build with your team feels real, while the antagonists leave a mark with their in-combat banter (even if most of them don’t stand out visually or have particularly unique abilities). Special mention goes to Armstrong and Fletcher—their juvenile meathead back-and-forth during what is essentially a horde-mode mission injects personality into what could’ve been just another shootout gallery. It’s simple, but it sticks. The horror also lands far better than you’d expect—and in some ways, even surpasses FEAR. By integrating more contemporary horror influences (such as
the SCP Foundation
and urban legends like
Backrooms
) into the narrative, the game creates genuinely tense, atmospheric segments. It rarely resorts to cheap jumpscares, nor does it suffer the mood-whiplash pitfalls that plagued FEAR and its sequels. That this was accomplished despite relying mostly on store-bought assets is particularly impressive. Still, not all of the game’s shortcomings can be chalked up to indie limitations. The lack of visual cohesion—from generic environments to forgettable enemy designs—hurts immersion. A proper art direction is sorely needed to help the game carve out a more distinctive identity, while still retaining its grounded military aesthetics fused with sci-fi flair. Likewise, the gameplay systems need stronger synergy between combat mechanics and level design—too often, it teeters between glorious chaos and mindless slidekicking RNG-fests. And while the horror elements are effective, they feel underdeveloped, leaving you dipping your toes into a pool that deserved a full plunge. Ultimately, Trepang2 feels like a bottle of off-brand hard liquor: rough, fiery, and unforgettable. It hits you in the gut, burns all the way down, and leaves a lingering sting, yet also makes you wish it could had been more finely distilled to make it go down smoother, and not leave your mouth feeling like the inside of a cement mixer. Still, for what it is, Trepang2 is a hard-hitting, high-octane shooter that dares to do what so many bigger games won’t: just let you have some bloody fun.

This game is criminally underrated, I heard of it just recently through youtube and it really is as fun as it looks. The ending campaign mission was incredible. I can't wait to see what other content the devs release

Easy to learn, fun to master. F.E.A.R. + + + where you can treat gunfights like a blank canvas and be as creative and aggressive as you want.

This game is an absolute fu****g cinema, with a capital fu****g C. Imagine a combination of F.E.A.R, Crysis, some Doom for a good measure and sprinkle it with some SCP stuff here and there, take all the most interesting things from each game and blend it together - that's Trepang2 and holy sh*t is this game a wild ride! Let's start with the one thing you will be doing the most - combat. The gunplay is very punchy, meaty and satisfying. Each shot feels like it's packing a hell of a punch, and the response you get from enemies when they inevitably get blasted also delivers, with not only a fu*k ton of blood, gore and bodyparts flying around as they scream into abyss helplessly, but the game even goes as far as to consider giving some dying enemies a disabled state as well, basically meaning a state where they technically are already dead as far as the game is concerned, but if you pay attention - you will find them on the floor, gurgling, holding onto their wounds before bleeding out. The devs didn't have to go as far as to include that, but they did, and it certainly helps paint a lot more grim picture. Oh yeah, the game also allows you some more stealthy approach if you so desire, but who the fu*k cares when combat feels this good xD No, but seriously - the option is actually there for you. In regards to enemy and level design, look... You will find bosses here that literally shred their arenas into pieces with the limited (albeit nice amount) of environmental destruction. You have multiple factions to go against, and if you think they all feel the same with minor reskins or some other bulls**t - no! The devs also apparently thought it boring, so they went and designed unique enemy types for each faction. They all sounds different, look different, carry different weapons around and utilise different tactics. In regards to the level design - once again, absolutely can't complain here, all levels look and feel unique. However, I do HAVE to mention the parts where the game slows down a little bit to introduce a little more horror here and there - those parts still manage to fit into the game very nicely and they always look just absolutely breathtaking. The first time I descended into the
basement
my jaw dropped onto my keyboard. The game comes with some nice weapon upgrade system that makes you want to explore, some cosmetics and some really nice abilities to play with. Main missions, side missions as well as some pure combat scenarios like waves, hordes and endless mode are here as well if that tickles your fancy. Oh, also - the music is perfect for some gum chewing and a*s whooping. In regards to the story: I mean, who really cares about the story in a game like this anyway? Just give us an excuse to obliterate everything in our way and we're happy. Despite this, however - by the end of the game I still found myself Ooooh'ing regardless. In conclusion, amazing game - if you enjoyed any of the aforementioned titles, you will like this one as well.

I've avoided writing this review until I beat the entire base game on Rage mode. A game that started out as a test by one of the developers to learn Unreal Engine- its transformed into something more... this is the FEAR successor you've been looking and waiting for. For veterans of the FPS genre that can beat every game on the hardest difficulty with ease- Rage mode will be the challenge that finally scratches that "itch" for an extremely difficult (but fun) shooter. I highly recommend that all competitive shooter (Counter-Strike, Rainbow Six, Quake, COD, Valorant, etc...) players attempt the game on Rage mode. The graphics/textures themselves are nothing to write home about- its the visual effects that immediately steal the show. Particle effects/sparks fly and sparkle off of every impact and shot, bullets leave the signature "slow-mo trail" that you see so often in other media, and the general lighting is skewed dimmer- allowing light sources like gunfire, molotovs, and night vision goggles to shine and glisten in contrast. Every firefight becomes a spectacle of particle effects and bullet trails; combining the blood of your enemies with smoke, fire, sparks, shadows, and acrobatics. The gameplay itself is- as I said previously- reminiscent of F.E.A.R., and you can immediately spot the inspirations. Slow-Mo, bullet trails, AI that is (more) intelligent than its modern contemporaries, and a small selection of weapons to use and abuse. Where this game differs is its stealth mechanics and gun customization, allowing a little more of a granular approach to firefights than just "go here, shoot those guys, go next arena". Do not let this fool you though- while some sections can be handled stealthily- the game heavily nudges/reminds you that you should be the bad-motherfucker super-soldier you were born to be, and fly around at mach 5 while shooting everyone in the head. Replay value is there through unlockable aesthetics (camos for your character, skins for your guns) and attachments for guns, along with wave-based/endless game modes on each level. The story itself is... rather uninspiring. I found myself clocking out once I understood the description of the level and the objective. The lore provided in-game is slightly engaging and immersive, but realistically you'll be too busy enjoying the enemy types/surviving amongst the new settings to pay attention. Enemy variety is basic, but wide enough to keep it fresh throughout the levels without playing a "press number 8 for the number 8 gun that kills the number 8 guy" minigame every firefight. This is not something to be discounted- as all weapons feel hefty and useable until you get to Rage mode. The soundtrack is world-class. We're talking 2 full CDs of Mick Gordon, but with more of an electronic and orchestral side. Every single level/firefight will have you feeling like you're in the middle of a movie; The music is well timed, and well directed- with different sections of songs looping masterfully into each other for action/stealth/no-combat modes. The selection of tracks was also tastefully picked, with a variety of moods, tempos, and genres fitting every context perfectly. I can not stress enough how good the music is in this game. In my opinion, it beats Doom 2016's OST, and has more, better-quality tracks; but that's for you to decide yourself. Rage mode gets its own section simply because its why I fell in love with the game. Infamous on youtube for it's insane difficulty, its unlocked once you beat the game on ANY difficulty. This is a mode that will have you replaying a single level/boss/wave/section for hours, days, or even weeks. "Enemies have eyes on the back of their heads and near-perfect accuracy" is one of the warnings that pops up, and it could not be more apt. The game turns from a action-packed shooter into a stealth survival game. With full health and armor- you'll die in around 2 to 3 shots, or instantly from any explosion; every slow-mo gunfight becomes a bullet hell mini game, and every section becomes a brand new challenge to see how you'll overcome enemies that are almost impossibly difficult- but not so impossible that their AI can't be exploited or beaten. It truly feels like a proper challenge, beating that one section that's given you so much trouble will leave you feeling an ACTUAL sense of pride and accomplishment that can't be bought or traded for. This game is a masterclass of taking inspiration without just doing a remake/remaster. It should be in the library of any gamer that would consider themselves a shooter fan.

It's not bad, it's just not for me. It felt like I was swinging between the game being too easy with the slo-mo to too difficult when using it less. In both cases it felt unsatisfying. Carries over the ammo irritations I had from FEAR without as many cool or hilarious moments like roundhousing someone in the face or mowing down a squad of goons with the pistols. Ultimately it adds up to less than the sum of its parts for me.

A spiritual successor to F.E.A.R. that goes above and beyond the standards set by said game. Very fun game-play that really makes you feel like a
END THE CYCLE
force of nature. Actually has a really interesting and engaging story as well with some moments that
END THE CYCLE
really surprised me, I actually cared for the teammates and minor characters. And also that ending that's pretty
bittersweet
where you
END THE CYCLE
. Basically, if you are a fan of FPS or just want to feel like a Bad-ass, I wholeheartedly recommend this game.
