This game is a bit of a bugfest. Twice at different points, the game froze and wouldn't let me click on anything, so I had to force quit out. The game didn't crash, it was still running. Also, there was a weird bug on one level where the top card was actually under the second card of the pile. Had to buy and use a joker on that stack just to get past that level. I've played some of the other solitaire games by this dev and haven't ran into any bugs. I would avoid this one.

solitaire call of honor (or the other way round, according to the title screen) is a typical +1/-1 solitaire in a typical fantasy setting. mandatory tutorial messages teach the basics, in case you were born yesterday. annoyingly, they keep coming up if you retry levels they're introduced on. 200 levels unlocked one by one, 3-star rating for no particular reason. besides collecting gold, you'll also do quests, mostly needing resources to improve your land. they're collected from levels and used to erect various buildings for cosmetic and story reasons, the map gets nicely filled up by the end. there are character bios, a love triangle and a kingdom to protect. wallpapers and 10 jigsaws using the same images are also unlocked with progression. a bigger than usual variety of blocking mechanics, some are pretty frustrating, but they're largely the same, only differing in their appearance. wildcards are rare but only 4 of them can be held and they have to be collected manually. sometimes other helpers appear briefly on some cards, if you can match them, they'll turn over a card, give more money or cards, etc. not a fan of the act quick element, but it's the dev's pet mechanic. they could make the markings smaller at least, instead of covering most of the card. money is spent on 'equipment', meaning jokers and various power-ups, such as shuffle, remove a card, what have you. they become available at certain levels, then can be used once between each cooldown, based on the number of cards played. buying the ones in the shop means you can use them twice before the cooldown kicks in. can't get more undos or cards per level, always a bummer, but I was surprised to find that power-ups also work on covered and blocking cards. the usual casual-colorful presentation with surprisingly good music in the main menu. separate volume settings, windowed mode (smaller, non-resizable), custom cursor and a few card backs and fronts are available also while playing, but not from the map, which doesn't have level numbers either. it's okay overall, but lackluster power-ups make it somewhat less enjoyable than many other games in the genre. there's also the occasional bug. level 35 showed the wrong card on top in one stack, made all the more annoying with only one undo to figure out what's actually above it. though when I kept clicking, it eventually let me take the correct card, and power-ups can help there as well. I also had to edit the save to have enough of one of the resources after I failed to find the levels again that provided them (some leaves near the wood-cutter's house, had 45, needed 50). it shouldn't have been an issue, 3-starring everything provided enough of everything else.

Firing up Call of Honor Solitaire, I really thought this was going to be the game. This...was going to be the solitaire I've been searching MONTHS for; a game that had great presentation, unique power-ups, and the addition of quests that require you to replay previous boards to gather materials to proceed through the story. And it is definitely all of those things. But it's also incredibly easy once you realize that the card layouts are not completely random. Depending on how each hand goes, you can rack up huge streaks simply by playing things smart, which is great, don't get me wrong. But the lack of any real challenge means that most of the powerups are left unused, and you'll find yourself sitting on thousands of gold that you can use to buy an almost endless stream of Jokers to trivialize what little challenge the game has. It's a real shame. With just a bit of tweaking, Call of Honor could have been nearly perfect. Heck, even just adding a Hard Mode would've satisfied most of my complaints. So should you buy it? As a mindless time waster, I guess it's fine. I don't disagree that it is relaxing to drone away through each board without really having much to think about. If you want more of a challenge, however, you're out of luck. At least it has Steam achievements. And a pretty soundtrack.
