AT A GLANCE

Game Name: Lightfish
Original Release: 2016-10-07
Genre Tags: Casual, Logic, Puzzle
Estimated Playtime (Campaign): 2-3 hours
100% Achievements Playtime: 4-5 hours
DLC Required for 100% Achievements: No
Multiplayer Aspect: None
Replayability: Some
Recommended To: Casual Gamers, Achievement Hunters

REVIEW
Lightfish is a casual, logic puzzle game.
STORY
There is no story, background, or setup to the game.
GAMEPLAY
The game mechanics have you try and take over as much of the board as possible and avoid all the other creatures or obstacles. You can capture or remove enemies from the board by having them on the side that is captured.
PLAYTIME
The game is not that complicated until you get to the later time trial maps. Some of these maps will require multiple playthroughs in order to get three stars. Play time for this game is ~2-3 hours to complete all puzzles and ~4-5 hours to get all achievements.
COMPLAINTS
There is nothing specific to complain about for this game.
REPLAYABILITY
The game has some replayability as you can come back and try and beat your old times, but I am not sure there is a lot of enjoyable replayability here.
RECOMMENDATION
I recommend this game to anyone that likes casual puzzle games or is an achievement hunter.

In a word, this game is lacklustre. Although I can't say it's a terrible game, I certainly can't say that this is a good game either. I felt that it was visually overstimulating, with too many flashy graphics making it difficult to see everything that's going on. Basically it's full of substanceless flashy graphics which actually hinder gameplay instead of enhancing it. It's quite a short game and it's by no means a challenge. The few instructions that exist in the game are poorly written (or translated), which says to me that no one really cared too much. I found the lava walls a little questionable when the controls aren't precise enough and a safe distance from them a matter of trial and error every time. The objective of the game is to capture areas of the game screen. You are safe from most creatures on your baseline (though not all). You dash out and try not to get hit by enemies, and once you capture 75% of the original area, you win the level. If you're looking for a game of this sort, then I would strongly recommend you consider Fortix2 instead (which also has a section that includes the Fortix original levels in the Fortix2 artwork). The Fortix games are more challenging (if you play on hard), more engaging, have more levels, are better thought out, and last but not least, they're a whole lot more fun than Lightfish. Also, I think that the Fortix games on an easy difficulty setting are easier than this game because the controls and game mechanics are better. I've enjoyed the game for a few hours, but I'm not sure it was worth it. Depends on what $5 is worth to you, how bored you are, and how much you love this sort of game. It also will not work on my Mac.

Lightfish. It's Qix, but dressed up in fancy vector-looking graphics and set in a computerized looking acquatic environment. As such the game doesn't have the abstract power of the Qix presentation, but the mechanics are exactly the same and so you'll find the same sense of enjoyment as the venerable old arcade game. The new updates involve some different types of opponents which exhibit different behaviors (one will explode near you, another will seek you out when you draw your lines, and another just floats around getting in your way). There's also different elements that you traverse when drawing out your territory which can slow you down, block you, or kill you if you touch it which add to the variety of the task. I like it, but it's a very slight game and not one you're likely to pick up and play a whole lot unless you just happen to be in the mood for Qix action. I thought the music was okay although it's very much Amiga old school mod music. I tend to like that sound...

If you enjoyed either of the Fortix titles, or other games in the vein of the classic Qix, Lightfish brings more of this type of gameplay, and adds a visual style that is reminiscient of games like flOw. There are some interesting enemy types and obstacles that set this title slightly apart from its brethren. Fire walls are obstacles that you have to maneuver around. Stray too close and you're crispy-fried. Ice walls slow your movement, but if you can break your way through them, they fall apart entirely. Watch out for enemies that aren't slowed by the ice. Exploding jellyfish try to reach for you if you get too close, and their area of effect explosions can catch you in the blast if you don't keep your distance. These are but a few of the innovative mechanics that Lightfish has to help separate itself from the pack and provide a fresh experience among Qix-inspired titles.

+ Price: The game offers a time trial mode and 45 stages for 5 EUR, that's a pretty good deal. - Level variety: More enemies get introduced pretty fast (as well as a couple new blocks), but their mechanics are pretty limited (you usually get a larger/faster enemy) and the way the difficulty increases is by making everything a lot more cluttered. - Score system: To get 3/3 stars you have to rush through the level, which will require lucky spawns; The system just doesn't feel thought out too much. - Nitpicks: The game has no shortcut (that I found, at least) to restart a stage; The game will sometimes show you a level as being available, but you haven't actually completed the previous one; It sometimes crashes after more than an hour of playtime. Rating: 6/10 Maybe grab it during a sale if it looks fun to you, but keep in mind it takes less than 3 hours to beat.

A great drug to satisfy your Qix fix. Playing both modes on normal difficulty should probably get you a couple hours of entertainment, and then doing it all over again on hard should get you a few more. I first played the game as an Xbox Live Indie game years ago and recently bought it again here on steam. I've come back to it a few times now over the years and it's always some good fun for a few hours.

Love this game! It's basically an updated version of the old arcade game Qix. Beautiful music, works perfect on Steam Deck. Highly recommended.

I thought it was nice to come across this game, a nice classic style of game. It’s a great little mini game for when you are bored and aren’t looking to get into any games that big. The graphics are pretty nice and although it isn’t that long of a game, it’s still a good time waster.

This game is pretty decent. It's essentially the arcade game Qix. If you haven't played the original, you've likely played a port or flash game clone with similar gameplay before. What differentiates this one is that is has a lot of polish, and new gameplay mechanics to keep it interesting. At the same time, I don't know if the price-point is for everybody. If you're really into arcadey games, it's probably worth 5 dollars, otherwise, wait for a sale. It frequently goes on sale for $0.99, even outside of the big Steam sale periods.

This is exactly almost 100% identical to Fortix . Cut the lines on a board making sure while doing so , you are not impeded by other fishes. Just the theme is changed with fishes and all from kingdoms , and it is as short as was the fortix. But yeah, I have no complaint whatsoever. I just like such simplicity and obsolete games in this era of Ultra 3 dimensionality.
