Marisa's Marvelous Magic Shop Reviews

Kirisame Magic Shop is hidden deep in the forests of Gensokyo. It’s so remote, in fact, that there aren’t any customers. Just as Marisa is despairing over her lack of sales, self-proclaimed management consultant Yukari Yakumo appears. Cirno is added to the team as head of HR, and Marisa sets her sights on rebuilding Kirisame Magic Shop.

Short but fun, the gameplay mostly revolves around micromanaging your stock and contending with the RNG-based mini-events. First run I ended with 1.6M with no prior background to the game, cleared in two hours - worth it for the cheap price and possible replay value since there's a few events you can miss if you don't have enough remaining cash as certain parts of the game. The game is broken up into two goals you have to hit, each 1 year apart, and it only takes about 1 hour of casual playing per year - the story is otherwise funny and in some cases topical (references to 10nm CPUs and VTubers). As most other reviews point out, the ending, while not disappointing or unexpected, is rather abrupt. I would really like to see an endless mode, and possibly more story since I personally really enjoyed the writing and the art style.

Marisa's Marvelous Magic Shop is a fun business simulation game set in Gensoukyou. You manage resources, production, staff and expand your business to pay off debts to Yukari and Tewi while fending off Youkai, investing in Nitori's and/or Aya's startups and installing MIM-104 Patriot Surface-to-Air missile systems to intercept missiles sent by rival companies to destroy your stores. The game is pretty easy, but doesn't forgive mistakes. One action (Buying materials, producing items, getting recipes, hiring staff, etc.) takes an entire week and you have 1 and a half years to pay off each debt. Unfortunately the game is really short and you can't play after the 3rd year which is pretty disappointing, but hopefully the game will be updated to extend this time or make it endless.

While short in length and clunky in the controls it's honestly a nice game with a price that isn't going to hurt a person wallet. It could use things like Endless mode or just allow the game to continue after the story is done because it does feel at times like a base to a larger game. Honestly recommend for a game that can kill a couple of hours.

atrocious, unintuitive UI. horrible combat system. generally not really worth a buy if you're not a touhou fan who's always frothing at the mouth for these video games

Fun short game that will kill an hour of time. Wasn't quite what I was hoping for though. This game is basically a challenge where you gotta do a thing based on another thing to win. What I was hoping for was a more creative game where you get to build a shop and do things your own way. Still, for $5, it was fun with a cute story.

Might feel a bit simple but overall great bite-sized turn management game.

Marisa's Peculiar Magic Shop is a pretty simple economy simulation. You purchase raw materials and create products out of them that customers will slowly buy over time. Game time only passes after you've done all your purchases/transactions in a category, so the point is to think big and buy/manufacture in large quantities each time. Making profits means you can stick these into even more production and hopefully snowball to repay your debt of each stage in time. This kind of gameplay alone could be terribly dry, but luckily, you've also got bodyguards to hire and monster attacks to survive with their help. Later on, you'll also build up a missile defense system against competing companies. Apart from these out-of-the-ordinary mechanics, the game's artwork is lovely. The biggest strength of MPMS overall, though, is its hilarious story. It doesn't just deliver some innocent jokes here and there, but goes for some pretty bold satire later. It's not a direction I'd have expected a Touhou fangame to head into, but I loved it!

Honesty, the game play is somewhat boring. It did not explain some mystery loan that ended the game, and I realized I would rather just not play the game than start over. Big disappointment. Personally, I did not feel it was worth the few bucks I paid.

It's mostly a text adventure with business management. That is no problem. The humor is also very cynical and crass, sometimes even very extreme; which is also fine Given the sexual nature of some parts it's questionable to make it accessible for all ages, though (German age rating). My main problem lies with the lack of replay-ability. It's okay once, but you can see almost everything with one single play through, which is only around one to two hours.

Let's get to it. Difficulty: 7/10 | Despite the simplicity of this project, the game can be very challenging... For like an hour.... After that, you pass a certain milestone and you can pretty much steamroll everything the game throws at you until the end. Lenght: 2/10 | My biggest dissapointment. The game just... ends... It feels incomplete. It seriously does.. IDK what happened during development, but this game needs an Endless mode. You can definitely finish it in 2 - 3 hours. Heck. If you are good enough you can finish the game AND REFUND IT before the 2 hours mark (I lost 3 runs and I'm at 1.4 hours, what?) Value: 10/10 | For $5 Bucks? It's a fair price, definitely worth every cent. Don't expect much replayability tho. Graphics : 7/10 | It is a managing game, you really can't ask much. The UI is comfortable to navigate, the character drawings are charming (not saying they are the best, but they are up there with Zun's levels of charming), color palette is nice looking, and is just a very peace inducing game. Perfect for relaxing. Sound Design: 9/10 | This is completely subjective, and although there is BARELY any music tracks (There are like 4).. I liked them. Translation: 8/10 As a NON-NATIVE English speaker... I think it's decent enough. Controls : 2/10 | Mouse is useless, use the keyboard. That's it. Can't say it's good. Story: 5/10 | It is as ridiculous as you would expect from a touhou fan-game. I loved it. That's it. I can't say it's good, but it is really, really funny. And everything feels believable enough for touhou characters. Lewdness: 7/10 | I don't know why I added this one. TL;DR Marisa's shop was a bittersweet experience. The game itself is good, but the lenght just kills the experience for me. Is it worth your money? It depends... As long as you don't mind some clunky controls, a somewhat weird difficulty curve, and a short duration... Yeah I would recommend it. Ps: Chubby Yukari is now my favorite Yukari. Pss: Drooling Alice is also incredible lol.
