This game educates you on how to properly wield a handgun while also either giving you an existential crisis or therapy. Or both.

Design of the guns are fun and thats kinda it for me. The rest was kinda, meaningless to my expectations. Guess the latter part is just not for me

A genuine marvel of storytelling wrapped in the only environment where that story could be told. Receiver is on the surface a game about a highly detailed gun simulation, but almost immediately you'll find out there's so much more to it. Make sure to check the options menu for the ability to reduce gunshot volume if the game is too loud - while the game is very intense when played with the totally un-muffled and utterly ear-shattering dynamic range of the loudest shots it can provide, it can also damage your hearing depending on the setup of your headset and/or speakers. Also check the options for the corrupted tapes, if you have issues with themes of and depictions of self-harm and suicide. If you leave them on, the Compound will have a Recovery tape so you can hear how the individual events were avoided at your leisure.

FPS where most of the time is spent reloading, double checking and awkwardly running. Extra punishing with the Rain World karma system bullshit which I still like, regardless of the pain it causes me. Story is surprisingly good for being told through dialogue and notes. There are some really interesting themes and ideas being discussed.

this game is just as addictive as it is frustrating but is a must play for anyone with the slightest interest in guns

You gotta love or hate the gameplay loop, but the message is really important and the gunplay feels clean and fun. Edit: after 6 hours of struggling and still not completing the game i change my review to not recommended, even with all the positive messages and good advice the game gives i just get more and more frustrated by the nerve breaking deranking and sometime insta killing turrets on sight.

You have seen the signs around you; the gradual creeping decay and dysfunction. You have realized that something is wrong with the media and the people around you. You know that you are different. This is why you're ready to become a Receiver. in all seriousness, this game is a gem that is surprisingly complex and filled with hidden mechanics. I'm going to start with the guns. obviously one of the main selling points and the reason i got into it as, just like many other players, i'm really intrigued by guns and their functioning. I've even learned some things while playing and confirmed others (the deagle's safety, for example: it doesn't lock the slide, like the hi-point's does). There is nothing that i'd improve on the guns and in all honesty, i believe more games should have such in-depth interactions. Another point not many notice/point out is the quality of the animations. To see what i mean, look at tarkov: it has the same, if not deeper level of control over how interaction with firearms works, yet animations are static and cannot overlap for more fluid motion. compare that to receiver, where there's a separate achievement for clearing a double feed and chambering a round five seconds or less: the developers did an absolutely amazing job with handling the guns even on the animations level. The ui itself is also a great strength of the game that isn't talked about enough, in my opinion: it's not diegetic, per se, but it does feel a part of the world by forcing the items out of their slots and into your hands whenever you want to grab them. Initially i would've criticized the lack of enemy variety in the game but honestly, this is more than enough and the current enemy pool serves its purpose very well. The design of the enemies themselves though... Holy shit, it slaps: every part serves a clear-defined purpose and disabling said part doesn't outright destroy the drone/turret/enemy, but hinders a certain ability of theirs: shooting the baseplate stops rotation, shooting the motion sensor stops sleeping turrets to be waken up, shooting the barrel makes turrets more inaccurate etc. (And even the impact of the bullet depending on the caliber differs from gun to gun!) The worldbuilding itself (can't really call it a story) is thought-provoking and very interesting, but that's about it. The things said that build it up though, those stand out. The tapes are very well designed and listening to them is less than a chore and more of a plus. Advices said are solid, warnings and thoughts are deep and meaningful and the narrative is a warning sign that basically says "live your goddamn life". Love the game! (still haven't finished it yet tho)

A game that makes you realise the most dangerous weapon isn't in your hands, but between your ears.

Incredible experience that helped get me out of a bad hole AND make me even more interested in firearms than I already was! It's difficult the first time. It's supposed to be difficult. It's a gun simulator first, depression allegory second And it wouldn't be as awesome as it is if those two themes didn't mix so well like it did here Grabbing tapes will feel punishing and sometimes seem completely impossible. But there is a way. Don't let The Threat get to you.
