Mizuchi is a different kind of experience, but one that I grew to love and I can recommend.
At first, it felt a bit cliched and I didn't think I'd enjoy it. The whole "well I can't tell you yet" drip feeding of the lore is not my favorite style, but throughout the playthroughs it works out.
I particularly like the character development of the MC. She grows from a shrinking violet to a strong person over the course of the VN.
There's two love interests, and it's pretty obvious how to get the basic route for each. It is a bit tougher to get the true ending, but there's a good guide for that.
To get all of the CGs in the gallery, you'll need the "15+ patch" from the developer's website. It adds some tastefully done, mildly spicy content (and can still be skipped in-game by making "prude" choices.)
Progression works on a hidden "point system." Some choices make no difference to the story and only give a slightly different version of the events. Bit of an oddity in the points system that kinda was weird (mildly spoilery)
The fact that you can max your points out with Ai and Jinhai, or get the absolute minimum points with both and get the same good ending is kinda weird. I feel that max points with both should have given a good ending and that minimum points should have given a bad or "all alone" ending.
So yeah, there's culture (Vietnamese and Japanese in particular), magic, mayhem, and some pretty dark moments that are all well handled and make for a great experience. There's also love, companionship, and redemption. It's gonna stick around in my head for a while. The background art, and sprites are very well done and beautiful. The music is ok, and as I've said the story is well written. The endings are quite different from each other, and even the "bad" endings really aren't bad as such, just not as ideal as the good ones.
If there is anything I don't like (and this is a bit of a hot take, because some people love this about the game) is that the food bit is a bit overdone. I get it, it is a cultural showcase and plays a role in that, but food in games just bores me.
