Real story line adventure with lots of HOG. I would recommend for HOG fans.

I enjoyed this old-school hidden object game with excellent hidden object scenes (not just junk and not so obvious) and intriguing story line (based upon a French novel). There are plenty of plot twists, and I loved the music. At times, the graphics are crystal clear but not always, Nonetheless, I found the game fun and have purchased another in the series. To me, the game is reminiscent of point-and-click but is definitely part of the hidden object-adventure genre in its early days.

I recommend this game, but only with reservations. Be aware that the interface can be quite touchy - in an early scene, you need to use a bucket of water to put out a fire, and it took several attempts for me to find just the right spot to click in order for it to register. This issue occurred in multiple games.
One other quibble (and it is a minor one): when a puzzle requires multiple similar items to solve (e.g. scraps of paper), there is no way of knowing if you have all of them other than going to the puzzle, putting in the pieces you have, and then checking if it will let you play. So, it can get frustrating running back and forth to the puzzle to see if you finally have all of the bits.
On the plus side, the artwork is quite nice, and the mystery story is engaging, which made me want to keep pushing through to see how it all turned out.

Average Game - Detective Fred Larson is the main killer but sadly you cannot kill him as he escaped in the train. Pathetic ending if you ask me. I like satistying endings.

Sleuthing with style. Pretty accurate early 19th century ambience. Good voice actors, loved the French accent.
A pity that the music kept repeating, despite the abundance of Romantic compositions to choose from. The early 19th century, those were the days of 16 hour workdays in the factories and tuberculosis. Not mentioned in this game of course. Enjoy a trip down history lane.

I really enjoyed it and was sorry it was over! I recommend this game for mystery lovers and fans of the Victorian era.
There is only one thing I would like to see added and that is a hint button for more than just the hidden object scenes. I only got stuck once, and that was because I overlooked an item. It was not hard to find, but I missed it anyway. I had to find a walkthrough video to get unstuck - so a hint button would be really nice.

No fast travel, no clear indicators on the map of where to go if stuck, no hints outside of the HOS part of the game, and no clear instructions on the puzzles. I love HOGs but this one was annoying to play. Doesn't help my opinion that the game crashed when I was about three puzzles from finishing the game for good. No idea if my progress was saved. Dark Parables are better HOGs to play.

Really quite disappointing. The game was moderately interesting, but in the end, not only do you not solve the mystery yourself, the 'solution' makes no sense, with multiple loose ends, no evidence what so ever, and your own characters efforts apparently meaningless.
The core of the game was supposed to be hidden object game, and there were some, but not very many. And it was often easy to spot items without knowing what you were looking for, simply because they stood out due to looking different from the background.
The game had several puzzles, and they were for the most part fun, but the controls were often awkward or obscure. The main example is one with pieces of a puzzle you have to put into a shape, and it was only by accident I discovered that you could rotate them, and there was no clear indicator if you were moving a piece or rotating it, leaving it up to trial and error.
All and all, I cannot recommend this one. I bought it on sale, and I played the whole thing in about three hours, but the excitement of the chase was ruined by the total flop of a flat and bizarre ending.
